I GΩT THΣ βΩΨ
I Got The Boy sung by Jana Kramer
Astrid looked at the local newspaper with Ruffnut. Damn. Hiccup had changed a lot. He looked so grown up in his black tux. He had gotten taller and finally grew out his beard. The longer Astrid stared at it, the more she could picture him in his red ball cap. "She's a lucky girl." Ruffnut spoke as she helped herself to a cup of black coffee.
"Yupp." Astrid agreed, crossing her arms in front of her chest. Merida and Hiccup's wedding picture was in the paper, talking about their honeymoon to Jamaica, where Hiccup had always wanted to go.
"Hiccup hardly looks like Hiccup." Ruffnut added, holding her mug in both of her hands, staring at her best friend. Ruffnut knew that Astrid still had feeling for the wimp. She just had to get it out of her.
"Yeah, well, besides his eyes, those still look the same." Astrid replied, not even thinking about her response. Immediately, she tightened her lips and looked at Ruffnut, who was now smirking.
"Oh yeah, those dreamy green eyes that made you swoon." Ruffnut teased, blinking her eyes. Astrid lightly shoved her, making Ruffnut laugh. Sometimes Astrid didn't know why they were best friends.
"That was a long time ago and you know that." Astrid smiled, looking at the blonde. Ruffnut shrugged her shoulders.
"Then tell me about it."
"Tell you about it?" Astrid asked, furrowing her eyebrows. Ruffnut nodded her head, bring her coffee to her lips. "But you already know about it."
"I forget things...a lot. That's what happens when you have Tuffnut as a twin." Ruffnut replied, rubbing the side of her head. Sometimes those two made stupid ideas that they actually carried out. Most of them ended with head injuries.
Astrid sighed and rolled her blue eyes. Did she really want to do this? Well, kinda. Maybe it could help her get over him. "It seems like another world," Astrid started, starting at the picture. "I remember riding in his black pickup that he absolutely adored." Astrid slightly chuckled.
Ruffnut nodded her head, wanting the blonde to go on. She didn't actually think Astrid would open up, but she didn't want it to stop either. Ruffnut wanted to know everything. "We were just two kids in the backseat. We were fearless and young."
Just thinking about those memories brought tears to Astrid's eyes. Why did she let him go? She wanted to go to that college so bad, but she didn't know that it meant losing Hiccup forever. "We had big dreams. I wanted to head off to college while Hiccup wanted to stay back and help out his dad," she added, gently rubbing the picture on the counter. "Little did I know we were falling in love."
Merida and Hiccup looked so happy, like nothing could ever bring them down. He looked like he finally found his true love, which wasn't her. It was obviously Merida, the gorgeous redhead. Merida and Astrid were similar in her eyes, besides Merida big puffy hair that Astrid was crazy jealous for.
"You were in love?" Ruffnut asked, breaking the silence. Astrid nodded her head, wiping away the tears that were threatening to spill. She didn't want to cry.
"Yeah, I didn't realize it till I saw him with someone else, but I wasn't going to ruin their relationship for my personal gain. He had a choice of who he wanted, and he picked the better option." She explained, trying to keep her composure. She wasn't going to break down.
"That's really mature." Ruffnut replied. Ruffnut herself probably would have tried to destroy the relationship if she had it. It was just the way she was. She knew it didn't sound right, but she was being honest.
"Yeah, I guess," Astrid lightly chuckled. "I still remember the old Hiccup. He made fake IDs so we could sneak into those spring break bars down in Florida." Astrid laughed, thinking about her first spring break with him. They almost got caught.
"We used to ride around in the backwoods by his house. He loved feeling the wind blow through his long hair while we were riding on that four wheeler. I would have to hold onto him so tight that I thought I would choke him," Astrid laughed, closing her eyes, pretending to hold onto him. "I can still feel my racing heart."
"Sounds fun." Ruffnut smiled, resting her head in her hand. She hadn't seen Astrid like this in a long time.
Suddenly, Astrid's mood changed as she opened her blue eyes. "Now he's all cleaned up with a haircut, nice tie and shoes. He hardly looks like my Hiccup." She mumbled, looking at the wedding picture.
"If things were different and you had a choice, which would you chose?" Ruffnut asked. Astrid furrowed her eyebrows, thinking about it. Which would she chose?
"Hmm. I did get the first kiss." She stated, looking forward.
"But Merida will get the last." Ruffnut quickly added, trying to help Astrid see which side would be better.
"I also got the class ring," Astrid added, rubbing her ring finger that was now feeling strangely cold. "And she got the diamond and wedding band."
Ruffnut shrugged her shoulders, unsure what to say. This was a tough question. She was honestly surprised she asked it. "Merida's got the future and I got the past." Astrid added.
Ruffnut hummed, rubbing her chin, which would she pick? Astrid got all of the old memories while Merida will get all of the new ones. "I got the long haired hot head while Merida got the cool and steady hand."
"You each got some thing the other will never have." Ruffnut replied, swirling her coffee in her hand, which was now lukewarm.
"I got the boy and she got the man." Astrid summarized. She looked at her best friend, waiting to see what she would say, but Ruffnut was too busy with her coffee. Astrid wished that she could have it all, instead of just the old memories.
