DRΣΔMS
Dreams sung by Brandi Carlie
There he was. His shaggy brown hair softly floating above his thick eyebrows. His eyes so green that they made the treetops and the grass look gray. His soft pink lips formed into a playful smile, and he was walking towards Merida.
Merida has been crushing Hiccup for years. Everyone knew they would be perfect together. Their love for adventure and nature drew them together, as best friends.
But Merida had dreams. Dreams that kept her wide awake at night frighten of the future. She also had dreams that kept her peaceful sleeping, showing her what she loved most. Hiccup, he was in her dreams. He was always on her mind, under her skin causing her goosebumps. She didn't know how he could make her knees so weak. How he could bring such a bright red to her cheeks and give her butterflies in her stomach when she's known him her whole life.
Merida didn't know how long she could bit her tongue and hold her breath. She wanted to come clean, but how? She kept it to herself, she knew what her dreams were telling her. She felt like she was drowning in her guilt.
"Mer Bear." Hiccup greeted as he took her hand. Merida gave a soft smile, showing she was happy he showed up. She counted to ten, hoping that would calm her fears. She tried hiding her secret behind latches, trying to keep it in. She couldn't let him know.
"Hey Hic." Merida replied. Merida had always dreamed of growing old with Hiccup. Her dreams mostly consisted of going on adventures all over the globe with her most trusted husband, but she couldn't have him. He was madly in love with a blonde. Astrid.
"How is your archery going?" Hiccup smiled as he led her towards the food court. She called him up, telling him that she had something she had to tell him. He figured it had to with her favorite sport. Archery, and boy was she good at it. She's been practicing ever since she was a child.
"Good. Good." Merida mumbled as she twiddled her thumbs. Merida felt fidgety around Hiccup. She wanted to come clean today. She was going to tell him her biggest sercet, but now she was having second thoughts.
"What do you want for lunch? My treat." Hiccup grinned as they entered the large court. Merida glanced at the restaurants, trying to pick her least favorite one. She was going to tell him at lunch so she didn't want to be reminded of her rejection every time she ate that food.
"Culver's." Merida answered as she tugged him towards the blue sign. They patiently waited in line, deciding their orders. After they received their meals, they took a place at a table. They sat across from each other, feeling something different in the atmosphere.
"So." They started together. They laughed at their synced thoughts. Merida pushed back her curly red hair behind her ear, showing off her face.
"You go first." Hiccup smiled.
"How are things with you and Astrid?" Merida asked. She was secretly hoping something terrible was happening between the two. Then maybe, just maybe, she could have him.
"Good I guess. Well, actually, I wanted to ask you a very important question." Hiccup frowned. He looked into Merida's bright blue eyes, trying to force out his question. As he looked at her, he stumbled over his words. That never happens.
"Go on." Merida encouraged. She felt herself leaning over the table to get closer to him. She could smell his sweet cologne. It remind her of the trees blowing in the gentle spring breeze. It reminded her of home, where it was safe and full of love.
Hiccup gave her a small chuckle. He was trying so hard to let it out, but for some reason, it wouldn't. The longer he stared into those sea blue eyes, the more he stuttered. "Should I a-ask Mer-Astrid to mar-marry me?" Hiccup stammered.
Merida felt the weight being lifted off her shoulders. Now was her chances to exclaim her feelings for him. He was asking for her permission! She sighed and looked at the ground. She couldn't break his heart. "I think you should do whatever your heart desires." She replied.
His eyes light up from her approval, but something didn't feel right. Merida didn't look happy. She looked sad, like something else was on her mind. Hiccup remembered that she called him here to ask him a question, not the other way. "Mer, what did you want to ask me?"
Merida hoped he couldn't read her mind. It was mostly images of them together, facing the world hand in hand. There were dreams of her shouting her feelings and him falling in love. But they were only dreams. Dreams that wouldn't come true. "I was only going to ask when you planning on marrying her." Merida lied with a soft smile.
Merida couldn't have him. He was someone else's. She wasn't a man stealer and she was going to let him make his own decisions. She wanted him to be happy in life, even if it wasn't with her. Even if it was a life long dream.
