01 ~ he's lying

The headlights flashed bright, putting a stark contrast between their kerb and every other  ones in the row of houses under the dark olympic shade sky.

Daniel's tall figure is visible, with shadows dancing over the smooth skin of his face, as he fidgeted with the heating.

Anne watched from the window of their living room, carefully peeking behind the heavy curtains to not raise suspicion, waiting for him to start moving from their front porch, with a padded black coat over her silky blue pyjama set and walnut waves tied in a tight ponytail.

When his car finally started to reverse, her feet ran to the door and she pulled on her brown boots in the few moments she had before he finally got in the road.

Her mind conjured the words of every amazing woman she'd known in her life. Her mum, her favourite cousin, her best friend and of course, CL.

They wouldn't do this.

They'd tell her to turn around and get into bed, because if she needs to be stalking her own boyfriend at 6.30 in the morning, maybe she shouldn't be in a relationship at all.

But Anne had a good reason to be doing this. She reassured herself of this as she slipped into the cold and windy british neighbourhood, wrenching the door of her own car open and landing into the leather interior. Her brown eyes made sure to catch Daniel pulling left at the end of the road before she started driving.

Daniel had been acting suspicious for months. Coming back late, disappearing on trips with friends she didn't know, not being as affectionate as he used to be.

They weren't the sort of couple to share every secret with each other, they respected the need for privacy. But he'd never been so distant
Had never avoided a gentle hug or a peck on the cheek before sleep overtook.

And then there was the call from last night.

Daniel had been in the shower when his phone rang. The first time Anne ignored it, choosing to stay laying on her side of the bed with a new copy of Kim JiYoung Born 1982 opened.

But it rang again. Cut off. Then a third time, so she had no choice but sit up and reach for it, arm stretching over her boyfriend's pillow.

She barely even looked at the caller ID at that time, assuming it was from work and she just had to tell them to call later. All she remembered now is that an M flashed past her vision.

"Hello?" Anne had said.

A momentary silence was followed by the line instantly going dead.

So now no one could tell her she was just paranoid as she drove a good distance behind Daniel in the rather empty streets. She had suppressed her doubts long enough.

At the traffic light she wondered what she'd do if her suspicions were proven right. When her mother found out about her father's affair, she'd filed for a divorce and moved back to Seoul with the family cat.

Turning into a right lane, she thought about whether she could do that, start over again away from Daniel.
Somehow she knew that wouldn't be enough to fix the dent that would be left in her heart.

A 30 minutes drive lead them to his work place, a black slanted building downtown, above a Starbucks and Gregg's. He parked up, unaware of Anne still tailing him. When he actually stepped out, mahogany suit not doing much to protect him from the brass wind, she felt confused.

The relief she should've felt just wasn't there. Instead a twinge of guilt crept over her, as she fixated on the possibility he may have actually been going to work.

Which might've meant that maybe Daniel wasn't doing anything wrong afterall. That she was wrong. For once.

However he didn't get into the entrance of the office doors though, just leaned on the door of his car, tapping his foot in a familiar rhythm she knew too well.

He did this when he got excited.

Along with singing to the tunes of an old Girl's Generation song, and running fingers through his silky black hair before reaching his rosy earlobe, letting them rest there. Deja vu washed over as it took her back to the days they were at university, when he would wait for her outside the campus.

Though his face was turned to the side, the excitement was still clear.

The traces of suspicion were back, but the guilt lingered. She mulled over whether this was getting out of hand. Whether she should just turn her car back from its parking spot and go home. Go to their home and assume their relationship had just hit a rough patch that will be over soon.

But then noticed that he straightened himself, swiped off some invisible flecks of dust and let out a grin, his dimple breaking out on his cheeks.

Daniel then pushed his arms wide open, and caught a lithe figure running towards him from the entrance of Starbucks into a tight hug. The woman wore a low cut flowery dress in no way appropriate for the weather, long white stockings stopping at her knees and and a beret.

From a distance, it would've been easy to mistake her for any random woman, but when Anne squinted her brown eyes to see more clearly, she saw the woman's face and she knew right away.

Small button nose, almond eyes framed with eyeliner, rosy lips and light skin. So much of her held an uncanny resemblance to Anne's own face.

And even though she did her best to avoid the girl, she'd have known her anywhere.

Mina.

Her own fucking sister.
