You're Safe
You smiled as you entered the BAU, carrying a couple of coffee trays. Rossi was the first one to spot you and smiled wide.
"If it isn't my favorite woman in the world."
You laughed. "I bet you say that to every woman who brings you coffee."
He chuckled as he took his named cup from your tray. "Only when they know just the right about of cream to add." He winked then left, his other hand holding a folder labeled urgent.
You pushed aside the sudden worry that bubbled up inside you. Usually, urgent files are the most dangerous ones. You have been around long enough to learn that much. Hotchner pulled you out of our thoughts as he approached you.
"Is it Thursday already?"
You nodded, handing him his cup. "Yup! Do you still want me to watch Jack on Saturday?"
Hotch took a sip and gave you a pleading look. "If you still don't mind. I wasn't planning on my babysitter getting married."
You laughed. "I'll let you know if anything sudden comes up but I'm pretty sure I'm not getting married anytime soon."
Hotch smiled in thanks as Emily and JJ bounded over.
"Good lord woman, I love you," Emily stated as she graciously took her drink and Morgan's.
JJ smiled at you as she took hers and Garcia's. "Any plans this weekend?"
You shook your head, taking the last cup in your hands and putting the trays under your arm. "Nothing too exciting. I have a new hire training tomorrow and I'm watching Jack on Saturday. He's never seen Indiana Jones so we are making a movie night out of it."
Emily smiled as she took a step forward, giving you a sly look that made you suddenly very much alert. "So no second star gazing dates with boy genius?"
You rolled your eyes and snorted. "First of all, it wasn't a date. It was an accident."
Emily snorted as she took a sip of her drink. "Accidents don't happen twice in one week."
You ignored her. "Secondly, he doesn't see me as any more than the coffee deliverer. Much less anything else." You stared at Spencer's cup in your hand, your scrawl of his name purposefully nicer than the others.
"Awe don't say that. I see the way you look at him. I bet you that's why you come over every Thursday." JJ smiled knowingly.
You blushed, not being able to help it as you spotted him on the other side of the room talking to Morgan. "I would come every day if I could spare the time," you sighed wistfully, "but alas I cannot compete with his genius mind."
Emily winked. "But he needs someone like you to ground him. To remind him to be human and not turn into a robot."
JJ nudged you with her elbow and nodded to Spencer as he made his way over. "If you come here for him why don't you score "accidentally" end up on the roof together again."
The two woman smiled and gave you encouraging looks as they left, giving the drinks they were holding to their respective owners. Morgan raised his drink, nodding to you in thanks. You nodded back, smiling.
"I trust you have been successful in staying away from locked rooftops."
You smiled warmly as you turned to Spencer, handing him his cup. "Seems that only happens when you are around."
Spencer gave you a small smile, taking the cup from you, his fingers lightly grazing yours. "And yet here you are."
"Here I am."
Spencer opened his mouth to say something but Hotch ran in, his brows raised in worry. "We need everyone at the jet in ten. We have strong evidence this one is headed this way."
Your eyes widened and your hand started to sweat. Spencer instinctively stood closer to you, almost like he could shield you from the impending danger from this new unsub. The others nodded, taking their things and walking out, giving you tight smiles in farewell. You returned them but didn't move. You didn't like the idea of them going into danger and that danger coming here.
Spencer turned to you, his things already with him. "I'll be sure to update you on how close they get. Just be sure to keep your interactions with others to a minimum."
You couldn't help but let out a nervous laugh. "But Spencer, I run a coffee shop. People are kind of unavoidable."
Spencer cringed. "Oh. Yeah. Right. Well then," he placed his hand on your arm, an odd think since he didn't like touching people much, "just do what you are doing and I'm sure you'll be just fine."
The both of you knew that sounded the least bit reassuring. But he had to go. Spencer gave you a smile then stepped around you. You called out, making him turn.
"Please be careful. I know it's your job but try not to play the hero if you don't have to."
Spencer's face brightened, a small chuckle escaping. "Sure thing (Y/n). I'll be back before you know it."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
You smiled at the sleeping form of Jack as he laid zonked out on your couch, the end credits of the second Indiana Jones rolled on the screen. Gently you moved him so he wasn't half sliding off the couch and covered him with a blanket.
With a yawn, you turned off the lights and checked the front door that it was locked. With a glance at the young boy, you walked over to the door that lead to the coffee shop downstairs and made your way to the back storage room, just wanting to make sure everything was in order.
Aaron's warning to stay indoors rang in your ears so you hurried up and went back to your place. You checked on Jack one more time then went to your room to grab a pillow not wanting the boy to get a kink in his neck. But you hadn't made it a step out of your room when you felt something cold against your back.
A breath tickled your ear and sent a sickly shiver down your spine. Your eyes searched wildly for something, anything, but they stopped on your curtains, blowing in the slight breeze. Your window wasn't open earilier.
You twitched against the object the intruder pressed against you. You opened your mouth but a hand clamped down on your lips hard, making you taste blood.
"Scream and I'll run you through."
He was male and his breath reeked of alcohol. You closed your eyes to avoid accidentally giving away to where Jack on the couch. You weren't sure if the man knew there was a child here and you weren't about to let him find out.
"Now you are going to do as I say."
But before he said anything else your phone rang. The vibrating on the table filled the room and echoed harchly against your ears. The intruder shoved your forward and pointedd to it.
"Answer it and tell them you're fine. Then hang up."
You took a breath and picked it up. You shakily pressed the call button and brought it to your ear, digging your nails into your leg to keep your tears at bay and the fear from your voice.
"Hey. Sorry I forgot to call you earlier..."
~
Spencer watched Aaron's face as he spoke to you, wanting to catch any signs that you may be in any danger. With quick movements Hotch pressed speaker on his phone and threw it on the table, his face pulled in concentration.
Spencer's heart pounded as he heard your voice come over the phone. But it didn't sound like it usually did.
"But Jake needed a walk outside. Who knew a dog needed to pee right before bed."
The crew stayed silent, giving each other's looks of confusion that quickly turned to understanding then fear. Spencer picked up the phone and held it reverently like it was you.
Hotchner nodded. "Thank you, Cathleen. Has he been a good boy?"
There was a pause. "Oh yes of course. Tried to jump through my window but now he's inside with me. Has no idea about you coming home early."
Spencer itched to say something but Hotch shook his head.
"Well, I won't be for another few hours-"
Your voice cut him off. "The poor dog seems to be the only one who is able to lock me out. His claws are so sharp. Anyways. Have a safe trip back."
Then the line went dead. Spencer stared at the phone, his adam's apple bobbing as he tried to swallow the worry growing inside him. He turned to Hotch and the others. He waited until Hotch came back from talking to the captain before he asked the questions that flew around his mind.
"What did that mean? Clearly, something is wrong. She was speaking in code right?"
Hotch sat down and let out a breath before looking around at everyone, Spencer especially.
"I spoke to her before we left, just in case this case went too long. Told her to call Jack Jake and to say he was a good dog if he was safe. But she went on. Sharp claws, coming through a window, locking her out."
The group grew quiet as the same realization came down on all of them. Spencer looked out the window and swallowed.
"The unsub has her."
Emily nodded. "And he has a weapon."
JJ shook her head. "He thought this through. Hopefully, he won't hurt her for a little while longer."
Hotch nodded. And so they made a plan. Obviously, Jack was alright but that could change. Soon they found themselves in what gear they had with them, surrounding your little coffee shop. Hotch nodded to Morgan and Emily to climb up the fire escape and see if they can spot Jack. Then he nodded to JJ, signaling for her to check the coffee shop. When she turned around giving the all clear, Hotch and Spencer moved in.
Spencer couldn't help but let all the memories of his interactions with you fly through his mind. The last memory of you looking at him in earnest to be safe. He shook his head as they entered your apartment. Jack sat next to Morgan, wrapped in a blanket.
Hotch ran to his sun and they hugged. Spencer knelt down and nodded to the boy. "You alright?"
Jack nodded. "Yeah. I heard (Y/n) talking on the phone and was about to get up and ask for a drink when I heard a man's voice." He turned to his dad, his face solemn. "I did what you taught me and pretended to be asleep. I heard them argue and she sounded in pain. But she got him to leave the apartment with her."
Spencer looked around. "Do you know where they went?"
Jack shrugged. "She said something about wanting to look at the stars one last time."
Spencer stood but was stopped by Hotch. Spencer almost begged. "She took him to the roof. 'Poor boy seems to be the only one able to lock me out'. She and I got locked out on the roof of the BAU twice and she made a joke saying it seemed to happen with only me around."
Hotch nodded. "Let me do the talking. Your focus is on her and getting her safely out of harm's way."
Spencer nodded, knowing it was no use arguing. Quickly and quietly Hotch, Spencer, and Morgan went up the stairs to the roof, the other two staying back with Jack. Soon Spencer heard voices. He wasn't sure what you were saying but he was proud of you for keeping him busy. Hotch opened the door to the roof and pulled his gun on the unsub.
Spencer paid no attention to anything other than you and your fear filled eyes as you stood pinned against the man. It felt like time ran in slow motion until there was a shot and the unsub went down. Spencer tossed his gun aside and ran forward, grabbing you as you collapsed to the ground.
"Spencer," you sobbed as you gripped onto his shirt, shaking.
"Shhh. I got you." He held you close, rocking you gently. "You're safe."
You started to ramble, worried about Jack, but he quieted you with gentle words as he stroked your hair. The both of you ignored the rush of people around you as he held you while sobs wracked your body. Spencer continued to whisper sweet and reassuring things to you that helped you calm down. You relaxed aginst him as your tears stopped and your body stilled.
He lightly kissed your hair, whispering against your head. "I am so proud of you."
You squeezed your eyes shut and let yourself completely relax against his chest, his warmth and beating heart grounding you. "Thank you," you whisper.
Spencer smiled sadly. "I will always be there for you."
Gently he picked you up and took you back to your place where he stayed with you for the rest of the night, holding you close and keeping your tears at bay.
