Surprise

You placed your hand on your forehead, pressing gently as another wave of pain hit your temples. Letting out a slow breath, you blinked and shook your head before walking out onto the porch.

"All clear here," you called into your walkie-talkie as you looked over the farmhouse, JJ close behind you.

"Same here at the machinery garage. Are we sure this lead was a viable one?" Luke's voice came over sounding a bit skeptic.

JJ picked up her walkie, talking into it. "The mom said she knows these people and that this was where her son would go if anything were to happen to her."

Emily came around the corner of the house, meeting you and JJ on the front porch. "I found a truck with the keys still in the ignition. The footprints lead to the house but I assume he wasn't in there?"

JJ shook her head as you stepped forward, pointing to the house with your thumb. "Nope. Not from what we could tell. It all looks like no one has been here for a couple of months at least."

Rossi's voice came over the walkies. "Hey guys, I think we have a problem."

The three of you turned to the barn some yards away to the right. You pulled up your walkie and chimed in. "What is it?"

Spencer's voice sounded a bit out of breath. "Rossi and I checked the barn only to find someone but they took off. I tried to go after them but they disappeared in the woods."

"But as we investigated the barn further, we found another body," Rossi added.

JJ let out a breath and Emily's shoulders sagged. As helpful as it was to have more victims to help learn about the unsub it didn't make it any easier hearing about another lost life. You winced as your head throbbed again, this time a yawn following suit.

You nodded as you voiced back to them. "Alright. We are on our way. Luke, Taylor, meet us there."

You joined the rest of the team huddled inside the barn. Luke entered in with Taylor and Emily called for the forensic team. You walked over to Spencer who was sitting on a hay bale, a bottle of water in his hands.

You folded your arms as you smiled. "Are you sure you don't want to join me on my morning runs?"

Spencer shook his head as he gave you an exaggerated frown. "Yeah, I'm sure. They just so happen to have an advantage of knowing the land better than I did."

ou let out a small laugh, nodding as you took a seat next to him, your back to the open back doors of the barn. "Excuses, excuses."

"Actually, runners have more coronary plaque buildup, raising the risk factor for heart disease. Not to mention the oxidative stress and sore muscles that come with it." He shook his head giving you a small smile. "I'll risk the extra weight, thank you."

You laughed, smacking his arm lightly. "Yeah well, I'm not exactly doing this for me or else you would see me laying about just like you."

Spencer's brows pinched as he smiled shyly. "Now that you say it you have been quite attentive to your body."

You looked around, the crew busy with the forensic team leaving you and Spencer alone to talk. You weren't sure how else to tell him so now was as good a time as any. A wave of headache pain hit your head, your eyes suddenly feeling very heavy. You knew you should have squeezed a nap before you came. But you smiled nonetheless.

"Well, Spence, I-"

You were suddenly cut off by the sound of a gun going off. Everyone sprang to attention, looking around with their guns drawn. But Spencer hadn't moved, his eyes wide and body frozen as blood dripped down his face.

But it wasn't his blood.

It was yours.

You let out a groan as you looked down at the bullet wound on your shoulder, blood oozing out and down your shirt. You touched it, the pain not fully registering as you looked up at Spencer. Your eyes started going dark and your head felt light.

"Spence..." you whispered but that was all you got out before you fell back against the hay bales behind you. You heard your name called out as darkness consumed you, your pain and fatigue finally ebbing away.

~~~~~
Spencer's body finally moved as he watched you fall backward, your eyes rolling to the back of your head. Quickly, he reached out, catching you in his arms.
"(Y/N)!" He called out, his hand reaching up to stop the blood from flowing out of your wound with every weak beat of your heart. "No, no, no, please no. Not when everything was going so well..." He stroked your cheek gently, your blood drying on his face despite his tears.
The others rushed over, calling out to you with frantic voices. Rossi called for an ambulance as a forensic nurse hurried over to see what she could do to help. Luke looked out to where the shot came from, his eyes catching movement.
"I have the shooter," he voiced as he took off.
Emily nodded as she seethed. "I'm coming with you."
They took off but Spencer wasn't paying any attention. Instead, he was gently pulled away from you by JJ as paramedics came onto the scene and took you away. Spencer wanted to fight back and go after you but he was still in shock at what happened. JJ held onto him as the two of them watch the medics hooked her up to the machines and took her vitals. One of the guys looked worried, his head bend over some readings before he looked up and spotted Spencer.
The young BAU officer perked up when the medic walked over, his clipboard in his hands and his brow furrowed. "Something is wrong. Her heart rate is too fast, she has a fever, and she is losing a lot of blood. Has she been sick or anything recently? Pregnant? Recently had a child?"
Spencer shook his head quietly as JJ answered. "No, none of that. She seemed fine other than complaining of a headache and feeling tired all the time."
The medic nodded, writing something down on his clipboard. He looked up to Spencer, pointing with his pen at the man's cheek.
"The bullet seems to have grazed you. You will need to come in for some stitches."
"Thank you," JJ said for the both of them as she angled Spencer toward the vehicle.
The medic lead Spencer to the ambulance, JJ leaving to talk with the others but not before telling Spencer to tell her what he knew as soon as you were seen to. Rossi came over, clasping Spencer's arm gently.
"Hey kid, hang in there. She's a fighter."
But Spencer didn't say anything, his eyes glazed over. The crew left him alone knowing the world was crashing down around him. Just six months ago you had miscarried and right after Spencer had finally gotten used to the idea of being a father. Then two weeks ago Spencer's mother showed signs of digression and was admitted to the hospital for constant care and to help her feel comfortable. Now he had just watched his wife get shot right in front of him.
The two of you knew the risks of being in the BAU together even before the wedding. You had not only fallen in love with Spencer while interning but the job as well and the idea and hope of saving people. but that didn't make the current situation sting any less. Spencer was beside himself. He would be nothing without you.
In a flurry of action, Spencer soon found himself sitting on a bed with you on a bed of your own next to him as a nurse worked on his cheek. Several nurses crowded around you as they patched you up. But the medic from before was in the corner, whispering to the doctor about something on his clipboard. The only reason Spencer was allowed int he room was because he was overly insistent on being present, the rest of the hospital crew too kind-hearted to deny your sullen faced husband.
A nurse Spencer had watched taking blood from you walked over to the same doctor the medic was talking to and handed him what Spencer assumed was the blood test results. As soon a the doctor saw it he threw the results down and rushed for what looked like an ultrasound machine. Spencer watched in silence as they got it prepped, but his eyes widened slightly as he watched them place it on your abdomen.
Spener's eyes shot to the grainy black and white screen, the blobs of your organs showing up as the doctor positioned himself. But then something caught Spencer's eye. Shooting up, Spencer stepped forward.
"Wait, go back. I saw something."
The doctor did and sure enough, Spencer saw it again. "That spot, bottom right corner."
Again, the doctor readjusted. Again, Spencer took a step forward but this time he pointed. "Do you see what I mean?"
The medic, all the nurses, and doctor all smiled as they too saw what Spencer saw. There in the middle of the screen was a small form, it was very small but the shape was unmistakable. The medic let out a breath as he shook his head.
"This would explain what was going on despite her wound being fairly minor."
The doctor looked to Spencer, nodding to you asleep on the bed. "Congratulations Dr. Reid. Your wife is pregnant."
~~~~

Spencer sat outside your room as you finished up with the doctor. His arms rested on his knees as he looked at the ultrasound pictures in his hands, his thumb stroking his child's form. The door soon opened and Spencer looked up. The kind man refrained from saying anything to you about what Spencer knew, giving the BAU officer a kind wink as he left you with your husband. You thanked the doctor then turned to Spencer, your arm in a sling.

Spencer stood, walking up to you and taking you into his arms gently. He kissed your shoulder and neck before pulling back to kiss your forehead. He looked into your eyes, his hold on you gentle but steadfast.

"I thought I was going to lose you."

You let out a little laugh, reaching up with your good arm and stroked his cheek. "It was just a shot to the shoulder. Nothing major."

"Well," Spencer stepped back a bit, handing you the picture in his hand as he spoke, "I would say this is pretty major."

Your eyes widened as you took the image. But Spencer wasn't done.

"The medic was worried. You were reacting pretty badly for such a wound and asked if I knew anything was going on with you. But it wasn't until the blood results came back that the doctor then had to check."

You looked up at your husband through your lashes, a shy smile on your lips. "Surprise...?"

Spencer reached out and held you to him, his head resting on yours. "Why didn't you tell me?" He whispered.

You hugged him back, looking at the ultrasound again. "I wanted to make sure. I didn't want to get your hopes up."

Spencer kissed the top of your head. "Eleven weeks is a long time to keep a secret."

You closed your eyes and laughed into his chest as you pressed the picture to his back. "You have no idea. I wanted to tell you but..."

Spencer pulled away just enough to look at you, stroking some hair behind your ear. "This time you don't need to convince me about the idea of being a dad."

You smiled weakly as tears pricked your eyes as you reached up to gently stroke hair back from the cut on his forhead. "I'm sorry I didn't tell you. I'm sorry I scared you."

Spencer grinned, wiping a stray tear from your cheeks. "It's alright, (Y/n). You had your reasons. You and the baby are alright and that's all that matters."

You reached up on your toes as Spencer leaned down, your lips meeting int he middle. The kiss was sweet, long and uniting, but you pulled back, your eyes wide.

"Now we need to tell the rest of the team. How come I have a feeling they aren't going to let me out on the field anytime soon..."

Spencer laughed. "Knowing you, you are going to come with us until you can't fit through the jet doorway anymore."

You smiled wide. "Our baby is going to have one big family."

"And be very spoiled."

"Especially by Garcia."

Laughing, Spencer lead you down the hall to where the others had been patiently waiting. "They will want for nothing. That's for sure."

You smiled up at your husband, his dark eyes filled with utter happiness. "With us as parents, what more could they want?"

With a quick kiss on your forehead, Spencer opened the doors and let the others gently tackle you with love, concern, and excitement. He smiled as he watched you interact with them and talk eagerly about our new incoming child and he couldn't agree more.
