Open Arms
You blinked, wincing at the bright lights blaring around you. Voices echoed, thundering in your head, pain throbbing in beat with your heart all over your body. You opened your mouth but something over your face made it difficult to speak. You looked around wildly, blinking fast as you tried to make sense of the faces around you. But it wasn't until you heard your name that suddenly everything came rushing back.
"Wait, wait please," you croaked. You reached out, grasping at nothing as your hospital bed was rushing through double doors and farther away from the voice you knew. "Spencer!"
~~~~
Spencer tried to race after you but was stopped by Luke and Rossi, their words of comfort meaning nothing to him. "(Y/N)!" He looked around wildly, reaching out and grabbing hold of the first nurse he saw. "Please! My-my wife. Is she going to be alright? What happened?"
THe nurse shook her head in apology, tugging her arm away as she rushed off. But a doctor close by over heard. He walked up to Spencer, nodding in the direction you were rushed off to.
"You related to her?"
Spencer didn't take his eyes off the doors as he nodded, his voice quiet. "Yes. I'm her husband. We were just married."
"Congratulations. I take it you weren't told what happened."
Spencer merely shook his head, swallowing hard as he tried to ignore the sound of your voice calling out to him just moments before.
The doctor continued. "She was in a wreck. The car buckled and twisted in half. She was thrown out the car and onto piles of debris on the road. She and two others were in the wreck but she was the only one who made it out alive."
A huff of hair left Spencer's body like he just got punched in the gut. He sat down heavily and rubbed his face. The doctor kept explaining what he knew but Spencer wasn't listening anymore. He just wanted to see you.
You gave everyone weak smiles as they turned to go, leaving you with your husband. You had to go into surgery but thankfully everything was alright. Mostly. But now that the others had left you couldn't bring yourself to look at Spencer. He sat next to you, your hand held in both of his.
"(Y/n)..."
Tears fell as you licked your lips and looked down. A sob threatened to burst but you held it down. Instead, you picked at a small hole in your hospital blanket. Surely he must know.
Spencer tried again, pulling his chair closer. "Please (Y/n), we need to talk about this."
You nodded weakly, sniffing and reaching over to place your other hand on his arm, your gaze still averted. "I know," you whispered, "I just want to remember what a happy marriage will feel like, since..."
Spencer shook his head and reached up, gently bringing your head over to his as he kissed your brow. "We will still have a happy marriage. Nothing has changed that. We will get through this together. we can do anything together."
Finally, you let the tears freely fall, a sob wracking your body. "Anything but have a baby Spenc. I can't have babies. You are married to a barren wife."
Tears fell down Spencer's cheeks as he pressed his lips to your brow again, your heads leaning against one another. He didn't know what to day. He didn't want to say anything really. So he held you as the two of you wept for a future that was cruelly snatched away so suddenly.
~
A year and a half later-
You looked at nothing in particular as you meandered around the mall kiosks, your earpiece humming with instructions.
Garcia: "Keep an eye out, my pretty peoples. They will be walking around in pairs like smelly socks, three at least."
Rossi: "Call off your section if you notice anything."
Emily: "Don't forget, this isn't just some-"
But before Emily could finish there was a deafening sound of gunshots followed by screams and the thundering of people running around. Your eyes went wide and found yourself running to the sound, your gun out and ready.
"Crap. They came sooner than expected. Get all civilians to safety. Reid and Alvez, you are closest, head over to them and the rest of you surround the group."
You made yourself busy with getting people to safety as you watched your husband walk up to the group of killers, your heart pounding as he dropped his gun and raised his hands. You heard Luke's voice in your ear as he spoke to them.
Spencer took careful care to notice that those gunshots didn't go off harmlessly. There were at least three bodies on the ground. Four men stood with hands on civilians, their guns pointed at their heads. Luke was speaking to them calmly as Spencer worked out a way for the civilians to get out alive.
But his heart stopped when he saw one of the civilians was a child, a boy no more than five. Tear stained face and scared eyes, Spencer kept his eyes on him. Rage bubbled up inside Spencer as he stared at the masked men, his eyes hard and cold.
Luke was struggling to keep them occupied as he spoke, Spencer could tell the men were angry and about to shoot. But movement behind the men and seeing your slight form in the shadows gave him an idea. He only hoped the group got the message. These men weren't going to see reason.
Spencer, with his arms still up, looked at the boy and gave him a small nod. The boy practically begged with his eyes for help. It was either now or never. "Do it. Go a head. Shoot. Now's a good as time as any."
Luke gave Spencer an odd look but didn't say anything as the men looked stunned too. But not for long. Shots rang out and all four men dropped to the ground. The hostages ran away from them, cries of panic as other officers finally rushed in, helping them to safety.
But Spencer had dropped to a knee and collected the frightened boy in his open arms as he ran straight for him. Spener didn't let him go as the boy sobbed into his shoulder. Spencer spoke as soothingly as he could as he stood up, catching your eye as you ran over to them.
You watched the whole thing unfold but it was a sickening shock seeing one of the men fall and a little boy run from him and into Spencer's arms. Your heart tugged at the image of the young boy in your husband's arms, completely protected and safe from any more harm. You made your way over and placed a hand on the young boy's back, rubbing it soothingly.
"It's alright, you're safe now."
Spencer looked at you with such pain that you leaned over and kissed his cheek, wishing more than anything to get that look out of his eyes. "You did good, Spenc. You did good."
~~~~
You looked through the glass of the office and smiled sadly at Spencer playing with the little boy. They were making paper airplanes flying around and by the shape of both their lips they were making the noises to them too. You let out a breath and blinked slowly.
"So he has no family?" You asked turning back to Rossi, Emily, and the family services agent standing with a very small file in her hands.
"None that we can find. But he will be put in a great home, a foster home that comes highly recommended." The agent said, not entirely sure who she was trying to convince there.
You shook your head. "He's so young."
Emily nodded. "Yes but Reid can't stay here forever. The boy needs to be placed with the state."
You nodded silently as you watched the two boys play, your heart and mind at war with each other at what should be done with a boy who just watched his parents get murdered right in front of him and now another person he has grown attached to is going to be ripped from him.
Spencer smiled down at Roger as he yawned and set his head on Spencer's lap, lazily flying the two paper planes around above him. It had been three days and after no luck finding anyone to take him in Spencer had to come up with a way to tell his new little friend that he will be staying with a bunch of strange kids in a strange house with strange parents that he himself wasn't sure would take the best care of him.
He was pulled out of his thoughts at the sound of someone entering. He smiled up at you as you sat yourself down quietly next to him, reaching over to smooth back some of Roger's hair.
"How is he? Has he said anything yet?" You whispered as you watched the boy's eyes slowly droop.
Spencer nodded. "A few things like "hungry" and "bathroom". He hasn't asked about them yet."
You nodded, biting the inside of your cheek. You leaned your head over onto his shoulder and watched as Roger finally fell asleep, curling up on Spencer's lap. Spencer smiled down at him again, reaching other to place a thin blanket around him. You reached over and took spencer's hand, lacing your fingers through his. Spencer could tell you were thinking and he had an idea of what it was about.
You felt Spencer turn his head just slightly, kissed your hair and, just like he read your mind, whispered into it, "Fostering couldn't be too hard."
Your eyes widened and your heart beat wildly as you leaned away, searching his face with wide eyes. "Really? You think so?"
Spencer nodded, shrugging a shoulder. "I know you have been thinking about staying home and working part time. And it may be nice to have the little guy around. Just to test things out."
Tears sprang to your eyes and you nodded vigorously. "Yes. Oh yes please." You blinked and your eyes went wide. "But he's not in our jurisdiction."
Spencer gave you a small smile as he pretended to think. "I'm sure Garcia and Emily can pull some strings. I mean, he already feels comfortable with us."
Your smile widened. "And we do have an extra room already set up."
Spencer nodded, pulling you down on his chest, one hand on your choulder as the other laid on the boy's side. "There are over 100,000 foster kids at one given time ready to be adopted. I don't think it's wrong not to add Roger to that number."
You smiled giddily into his chest then reached up to kiss his jaw. "I love you Spencer Ried and your crazy genius ideas."
Spencer chuckled lightly. "And I love you (Y/n) Reid for being an amazing woman to put up with me."
Your heart felt full for the first time since the accident as you laid on your husband's chest while stroking little Roger's hair. The idea of finally becoming a mother almost too good to be true.
