My Turn
You coughed into your hand as you rushed away from the burning building, your breath forming small clouds in the crisp fall air. Police, firemen, and the rest of your BAU team rushed around, calling orders and checking for the killer. You felt a hand on your back causing you to let out a squeak of surprise, jumping a bit.
"Hey, are you alright?"
You turned and relaxed seeing Spencer's worried face looking down at you, his breath coming out in puffs. "Yeah, I'm alright. Just a bit winded."
He directed you to the back of an ambulance where you sat down and was giving a glass of water to wash down the soot in your throat. Spencer looked around as he stayed close to you. You watched as the fire was fought and forensics went in to check for bodies.
You glanced at Spencer nodding to the building. "Other than the unsub was there anyone else in there?"
Spencer shook his head, turning to you, his face still pinched in worry. "Yes only him. Thankfully, your team got out fast enough. Sorry I couldn't warn you sooner."
You stood to stand next to him, turning your head to study his face. "It's alright. No harm done." You followed his gaze to the building, a body bag being rolled out. "What's on your mind, Spence?"
He was quiet a moment before turning to look at you. "I don't think it's over. I'm not sure what it is yet but why would the unsub blow himself up in hopes of hurting us if the case is clearly still active. Not unless he had a backup plan."
You bit the inside of your cheek, nodding but not before your shoulders started to shake from the cold outside air. "Huh...That's true." Your body did a full shiver and your teeth chattered. "I had no idea how cold it was out here. But I think I left my jacket in the car." You turned to go get it. But Spencer stopped you, placing a hand on your arm.
"Here, let me, I need to grab mine too. And it looks like Rossi needs to talk to you."
Sure enough, the stout Italian was making his way toward you. You nodded to Spencer, smiling wide. "Thanks, Spence. Second car, back seat. It's blue."
Spencer nodded, giving you a small smile before heading off to the cars down the street. Once he arrived at the car, he glanced up at you and watched a moment as you spoke with Rossi. There was something about you that just made Spencer feel...warm and safe. Seeing you almost get blown up suddenly brought up feeling he wasn't sure he felt ready to acknowledge yet.
He opened the car door and was about to reach in for your jacket but a cold object was pressed against the back of his neck. Spencer's heart stopped and he froze. He could hear ragged breathing as he looked around, seeing if anyone was nearby. But even if he were to call out no one would be able to come to his aid. He hated that he left his gun by the ambulance. Stupid.
The person behind him shifted and sniffed. "One word and I'll blow your head off."
Spencer cleared his throat. "My friends, they are expecting me."
"Not anymore they aren't. Tell them your mother called and that she needs you right away."
Reid's stomach dropped at the mention of his mother. If they knew that much who knew what else they knew and could do. Carefully and taking as much time as he could, Spencer texted you, then put his phone away.
"I've done what you asked. Now, what do you want with me?"
They chuckled darkly as Spencer felt a hand grasp his arm and tugged him roughly away from the chaos and right under the noses of the BAU team. "I am just finishing what my master started."
Spencer reluctantly went with the new unsub but not before glancing back at you just in time to see you look down at your phone and the one clue that could lead you to him. He hopped.
~
You looked down at your phone, puzzled. You were wondering why Reid was taking so long to get your jacket. His text to you seemed odd though.
"Talked to mom About coming home. can't Keep her waiting. Everything is alright. forgot the New jacket in the car."
You shook your head and read it over and over. Rossi watched with an amused grin.
"I may be getting old but I can tell when you youngin's get messages from that special someone. What did Reid send that's got you all confused?"
You didn't say anything as you handed him the phone. You looked over at the car and found one of the doors open but no Reid. Your heart started to race as his earlier words came to your mind.
"Not unless he had a backup plan."
Your eyes grew wide and you turned to Rossi. JJ and Emily joined soon, Luke as made his way over. You opened your mouth but nothing came out but your breath in little clouds, your hands going numb.
JJ stepped forward as Rossi passed your phone to Emily. "(Y/n)? Is everything alright?"
Emily spoke up. "Looks like Reid needed to go see his mom."
Rossi shook his head. "Nothing rattles Reid enough to make him screw up in his grammar. Not even stress with his mom." He pointed to your screen. "Look at how some of the letters are capitalized randomly."
Luke stuffed his hands in his pockets as he shrugged against the cold. "Maybe his fingers were numb from this frigid wind."
You took your phone back from Emily, JJ looking over your shoulder. You shook your head as you looked over the words again. "No. I think he did them on purpose. Look." You pointed to each capital letter.
"Talked. About. Keep. Everything. New."
JJ let out a breath. "Taken."
You groaned inwardly as you looked back at the car. "Right before he went to go get my jacket he said something about the case not being done yet now that the unsub was gone." You shook your head and turned back to the group, your body shaking from the cold and the worry growing in your chest. "The unsub had an accomplice and they have Spencer."
~
Spencer blinked against the sudden brightness as a foul smelling black sack was taken off his head. Blood rushed in his ears as he noticed that he was laying down at an elevated angle. If memory served him correctly, as it almost always did, he was right in the unsub's lair and the man clinking tools behind him was the accomplice.
Fear and dread bubbled up inside Spencer as he looked around, taking in all that he could in hopes of finding something useful to his escape. Even though he had a feeling you would understand his message there was always an off chance you won't get to him in time.
The sound of a cart moving drew Spencer out of his thoughts and to the small lanky man pushing a metal cart filled with medical tools. None of them looked clean and none of them looked at all pleasant. Spencer fought back the prickle of fear that grew at the back of his neck.
The lanky man smiled up at Spencer, his gapped teeth making him look even more eery. "Welcome to the dentist Mr. Reid. It is time for your check up!"
"No thank you, I already had my six month check up. No cavities."
But the lanky man didn't care. He pushed a button on the stiff bed and suddenly Spencer was angled back, his feet angled up, blood slowly rushing to his head. He started to mess around with some tools, humming under his breath.
Thankfully the change in position made his hands closer to the tool cart. If only he could reach his hand over just slightly and grab something useful. All the while his brain was thinking of every scenario that you could be in and the ones that would get you there before he became toothless.
~
You held your gun up as you motioned for the others to circle round the back. After two hours of literally trying to think like Reid and not roll up into a ball and cry for losing him, you and the team finally were able to piece together the last bits of the case before the first unsub had blown himself up. AS it turned out the accomplice was the one doing most of the dirty work. And you just so happened to remember one of the possible places they could have used as the hideout.
You took steady breaths and watched as it puffed out in front of you. With each step you took, you felt your heart threaten to beat right out of your chest. You heard the others over the walkie-talkies and so far they found nothing. You had entered an old utility building, cautiously checking each room, finding nothing. You were about to call it quits, that this was yet again another dead end until you heard the sound of something hitting the ground.
You raised your gun and walked to a back room and a suddenly strong stench of blood hit your scrunched nose. You waited until you heard anything else but nothing other than familiar heavy breathing alerted you to any type of danger. You would have ran in there but you needed to be careful. For Spencer's sake.
You turned a corner and nearly sobbed. There he laid, his head angled down, blood rushing to his face as his hair hung limply. His eyes were closed and blood was seeping from his nose and head. A body slumped motionless on a metal cart, a bloody tool at his feet, Spencer's hand also covered in blood.
Once you were sure no one else was here and the man was dead you called for the others as you rushed to Spencer's side. He groaned as you reached him, righting the table.
"Oh, Spencer. Spence, can you hear me?" You cooed as you brushed hair out of his face and checked for terrible wounds. "Hey, hey stay with me."
His head bobbed as he tried to stay conscious. But once his eyes fully opened and laid on you his body suddenly shot awake. "(Y/n)...You-you made it. You got my message." He tried to move his arms but they were restrained and rubbed raw.
You smiled back tears as you worked on freeing his arms and legs. Once he was completely free he reached out to you and you held him to you as he collapsed into your own arms, his head resting on your shoulder. "Of course I made it," you whispered into his blood matted hair.
The noise of the others arriving didn't stop you from holding him to your chest. His body racked with dry sobs as he held you as tightly as he could. Carefully you pulled him away from you so you could get a good look at him.
Spencer had always thought you were beautiful but seeing you right in front of him made you an angel in his eyes. He nearly thought himself dead when you first came in. He had stabbed the man but not before getting hurt himself but he couldn't leave and he feared he was stuck there forever.
The two of you searched each other's faces before you let out a little nervous laugh and pulled him to you again but this time you pressed your lips to his. Spencer instantly relaxed into you, reaching up to hold your head in his hands as he kissed you back. You were obviously being gentle but you started to laugh as he pressed for more.
You smiled and pulled away, pushing more hair out of his face. "I think it was about time that happened."
Spencer smiled weakly as he tried to remember where and who he was. "I was wondering when I was going to man up and do something about how I felt."
"Shh, it's alright." You held his arms as you helped him stand, medical teams, coming in to collect him. But you didn't leave his side. "Well, it was my turn to come save you this time."
"I stabbed him." He smirked.
"And I freed you. What a team we make."
Spencer smiled weakly as he reached down and intertwined his fingers with yours as the EMTs fussed over him. "But let's hopefully keep the saving each other to a minimum."
You gave him a sad smile and nodded as he sat down on the ambulance edge. You leaned over and kissed his forehead. "Sounds good to me."
Spencer leaned against your shoulder as the others came over and eased his worries by teasing and laughing at his new relationship status. It felt good to be the one to come to his aid and show him he can lean on you for anything.
