May I (pt2)
It took me rewriting this three times to get it right. I hope you all like it ;) thanks for being patient. haha. But also a big thank you for reading my stuff and for the amazing comments and kind words each of you leave for me. Thank you so so much.
Spencer leaned against the doorway of your hospital room, your sleeping form resting soundly for probably the first time in a long long time. That alone made Spencer seeth, not to mention seeing you in pain; not when your arm was put back in place, but when you saw the other girls. You let him hold you and stroke your hair. But soon enough you needed to be seen to and finally rest.
Rossi came over, his face pinched in grandfatherly worry. "Have you gotten anything to eat since you go here?"
Spencer blinked and took a deep breath before looking at the older man. "Uh, no. I'm not really hungry."
"And I'm Russian, not Italian."
"Wait, really?"
Rossi let out a huff of a laugh through his nose, shaking his head. "I thought we were saying things that weren't true."
At that moment Spencer's stomach growled, making Rossi smile widen. He reached up and clapped Spencer on the shoulder, his head nodding in the direction of a small lounge area. JJ, Emily, and Hotch were already in there snacking on some delivery food Luke had brought over.
"Go on, kid. She's not going anywhere."
Spencer gave you one last lingering gaze before he nodded and joined Rossi and the others to eat some food. But all while he was eating he couldn't get you out of his mind. The look of pure determination and fear in your eyes as you spoke to the team about finding your friends. And how you sagged on him when you both arrived at the hospital, seeing your friends in the state they were in. Spencer didn't want you to see them until you and the other girls had gotten some rest first but you were insistent.
Becky was terribly ill, and her mental instability wasn't helping. She would need severe psychiatric help to stabilize her to one day have a "normal" life again. Her family had yet to give up, even after three years. But they may not get back the Becky they lost. However once cleared by doctors she could have visitors. Then hopefully, if all went well, she could go home.
One of the sick girls, age nineteen, was named Natasha. She had been taken from her home while setting up a basketball hoop for her younger brother eight months ago. Her brother blames himself for her kidnapping, saying how he made up a reason not to help her with is own hoop. Once she was well again and the unsub was caught, she could go back home.
The third girl, age seventeen, was named Eliza. She was on her way home from a late night study group and was picked up by a falsely indicated Lift driver, saying one of her friends had ordered him to get her and take her home. That was eleven months ago. She was pronounced dead by her family and friends, having lost all hope. She will stay that way until the unsub was caught and her family could be notified carefully. Then, once she was better, she, too, could go home.
Looking to you, Spencer wondered if you had a home to go back to. If your family was eagerly awaiting your arrival home.
Spencer was the only one you allowed to be close by while the doctors checked you over and replaced your shoulder back into your socket. You didn't cry out once, though it was clear your eyes glazed over with pain. For yourself or the other girls, Spencer wasn't sure. Though it was most likely both.
You not once mentioned the deaf girl except to the officers in charge of following the case. Then you became quiet, receding into yourself until you fell asleep. But Spencer didn't leave your side, his worry over you very evident. He understood the level of fear you were feeling, though he had not gone through the exact thing you had. Therefore, he took advantage of your trust in him to be there for you when he didn't have someone there for him. No one was able to comfort him with understanding when he was going through his traumatic experiences.
Spencer just hoped he was helping more than hindering.
~~~~~~
You hugged your arms around your middle, tugging your cardigan close to you as you gazed out the window. Two hummingbirds were flitting around their feeder, the light of the morning sun hitting their bodies, making them shine with an iridescent glow. A soft breeze ruffled the thin white curtains as the sound of birdsong chirped through the open window.
You closed your eyes and took a deep breath, letting the serene feeling of the moment overshadow the reason you were here.
The sound of someone approaching made you tense up and freeze, your heart pounding, your casted broken wrist throbbing.
"(Y/n)?"
At the sound of his voice calling your name you instantly relaxed. Your eyes suddenly filled with tears but you squeezed them away, taking another deep breath.
"Hmmm?" You didn't trust your voice to answer without the shake of emotion.
Spencer stepped closer but not too close. You opened your eyes and saw his reflection in the window, his eyes on you, his gaze soft.
"Becky, Natasha, and Eliza have been placed in their homes and are resting. The rest of the team is wondering if you would feel alright talking to them before they set out to find Danielle."
You closed your eyes again and pictured the filthy little girl, her hazel brown eyes wide and her hands moving frantically in a desperate cry for help. Danielle was a lot younger than she looked. At fifteen and healthy, she was at a very high risk of being sold off and soon. From the case filed by her parents, they had left her at the park, something they did often, as they helped an older woman with dinner every Tuesday and Thursday. Daniell was swinging and was snatched up without a sound or a trace. That was six months ago.
You opened your eyes and turned to look at Spencer, nodding your head yes as you gazed at his shoes. "I will speak with them."
Without a word, Spencer led you to the front room of your safe house. You as well as the other girls, were under witness protection and therefore put in a home in an undisclosed location. You were just happy to be anywhere but the police station, the hospital, and most of all Sep's home.
Everyone was either sitting around or standing, the room thick with purpose and determination. But you felt scared and frustrated. Spencer motioned to a single armchair and you took a seat, looking up at him.
"Are the other girls doing alright?"
Spencer nodded with a small smile as the leader stepped forward, Hotchner if you remembered right.
"Becky, Natasha, and Eliza are all being safely looked after. For safety reasons, I cannot allow you to talk with them. At least not until the Unsub is captured."
You raised a brow. "Unsub?"
A woman with long blonde hair nodded. "Unknown Subject. The bad guy."
You nodded once liking the idea of calling the monster by a made-up name than his given one. It took you one more step away from being connected to him and his heinous crimes.
An older man with crows-feet eyes and suntanned skin stepped forward. You remember hearing him being called Rossi.
"We called you in here to see if you had anything else on Danielle that you could remember that would help us in searching for her. As well as all you know on the Unsub."
You let out a whoosh of air and nodded. "I don't know Danielle very well. She has dirty blonde hair, hazel brown eyes. She was wearing a light blue sundress with little sunflowers at the bottom hem. It was filthy when I saw her last so I'm not sure he still has her in it." You closed your eyes and shook your head, an unsolicited tear falling down your cheek. "She might be fully deaf. I'm not one hundred percent sure." You let out a shaky breath.
Spencer spoke up, seeing you were struggling. "We can get more on her from her missing persons' case file her parents made."
"What of the Unsub? What can you tell us of him?" A Hispanic man asked, his tone strong though his eyes were soft.
A gentle hand rested on your shoulder as Spencer spoke to you quietly. "You don't need to tell us if-"
You lifted your hand up and touched his, shaking your head slightly. "I will tell you all you need to know. Then please, go and find Danielle as soon as you can. She trusted me. I told her I would keep her safe."
~~~~~
Spencer glanced back at you still sitting stoically in the armchair before turning to Rossi, Emily, and Hotch as the others prepped to leave.
"I have never seen someone compartmentalize so well."
Emily nodded. "And trust people, let alone a man."
"We will notify you as soon as we have a lead. Just keep her safe," Hotch commented.
Spencer blinked. "Wait, am I not coming with you?"
Rossi chuckled softly as Emily smiled, and Hoch nodded. Rossi nodded to you as he spoke to Spencer.
"We figured it would be wise to leave someone behind to make sure our number one witness wasn't going to suddenly go crazy and hurt herself while we are gone. She also seems like the type to pick up and follow us to make sure this girl is found and safe."
"By why me?" Spencer asked slightly dejected he couldn't go out there to find Daniell and put a smile on your face.
Emily shook her head as she walked away, smiling knowingly. "Those Ph.Ds were sure waisted on ya."
Hotch gave Spencer a pointed look. "I gave your contact to the other safe house officers should there be any problems. I will contact you the moment we know anything." Then he nodded and left, following after Emily.
Spencer turned to Rossi with a confused look. But Rossi just smiled.
"Just talk to her. Remind her that she is safe. Help her know that she isn't to blame for anything." Then the Italian left with a small, sad smile, a clap on the shoulder and a nod.
Spencer turned to look at you but you were gone. In a second of mild panic, Spencer rushed into the house only to see you standing at the window like before. He slowly walked up to you, standing right beside you as you watched a hummingbird eat at the feeder. The sound of tires screeching told you both that the others were gone save for the two other security agents outside the house.
You didn't move or look at him as you spoke, your voice soft. "Are you not going with them?"
"Someone needs to help you know you are safe." He watched you in the window's reflection.
You let out a shaky breath, your shoulders sagging. You didn't say anything as you angled yourself to him. Closing your eyes, you leaned into him, pressing your forehead to his shoulder. Spencer stood still a moment, not fully sure what to do. A few seconds passed before you spoke, your voice full of emotion, tears soaking through his shirt.
"Thank you, Spencer Reid."
Spencer then moved one arm up to stroke your hair, leaving his other arm down as to not make you feel trapped. The two of you stood like that as the hummingbirds continued to eat, the sun rising higher into the sky.
~~~~~~
A day past and still no news. Despite having Spencer around, you were still utterly terrified. not for yourself but for Danielle. No amount of chess games, book games, movies and hummingbird watching could ease your mind.
However, having Spencer around did help you feel better overall. he was sweet and caring but definitely not overbearing. He had the cutest smile and the most charming laugh. His touch was gentle and yet protective without making you feel uncomfortable or scared. Of all the men who could help you lose your fear of the male species, the BAU sure knew how to pick them. You found yourself smiling and openly laughing.
You were finishing breakfast when Spencer came bounding in, his hair wet from taking a shower. You put your drink down and looked at him with furrowed brows.
"What is it, Spencer?"
He took a seat across from you, placing a phone on the table between you two. "Go ahead Garcia, you're on speaker."
"Alright darlings, I just got word from Hotch-man that they found a car that was stolen two days ago at an abandoned warehouse. It's a large area but they have it all blocked off and are very optimistic that the Unsub as our little Danielle in there somewhere. But it will take them some time to comb through the area."
You stared at the phone, your ears ringing as your heart sped up. Spencer reached across the table and gently took your hand in his, drawing your eyes up to him. He gave you a reassuring nod as the sweet sounding lady Garcia continued.
"I have a car on speed dial should you need one to go and join the rest of the team. But get this, Newbe Alvez thinks you won't-"
Spencer glanced at you before picking up the phone and taking it off the speaker, pressing it to his ear. You stared where the phone had laid, your heart pounding. You then blinked, glancing at Spencer as he continued to speak to the woman in hushed tones. You didn't care to pay attention to what they were saying. Slowly, you got up from the table and left the kitchen, wiping tears as they rolled down your face without warning.
You needed space. You needed to think. You needed to find a reason why you should be there, going with them to save Danielle.
~~~~~~
Spencer hung up with Garcia, placing the phone on the table. But he found you were gone, the food on your plate hardly touched. He glanced around the room and into the living room but you were nowhere to be found. He rushed outside to ask the guards if you left, but they said they hadn't seen you.
Going back inside, Spencer checked the hummingbird window, the place where he knew you enjoyed watching. But the hall was vacant. He ran a hand through his hair and let out a breath, not at all sure how he lost you in such a small house compared to most he had to search in the past.
Checking the three bedrooms, Spencer quietly called out your name, knowing that shouting for you would do no good. He didn't want to frighten you. He checked his bathroom and the bathroom in one of the halls. But you were nowhere to be found.
Spencer was about to call Hotch when he remembered there was a bathroom in your room. KNocking on your door, he called out to you.
"(Y/n)? Are you alright?"
Your bathroom door was slightly ajar, the light on but no water was running. Spencer kicked himself for not noticing it before as he inched closer. He slowly pushed the door open and looked in. You weren't in there.
"(Y/n)?"
He heard a single sniff from behind the shower curtain. Carefully, Spencer reached out and moved the curtain back just enough so he could look inside. Spencer let out a relieved breath but his heart dropped seeing you curled up in a ball inside the shower tub, your face streaked with tears.
Spencer leaned his head against the wall as he gazed at you, his mind trying to figure out what to do next. But you spoke, answering his unsaid question.
"I used to hide out in the bathrooms when Sep-the Unsub was done for the night or when Becky finally got to sleep." You wiped your face and sat up, leaning your head back, your eyes half laden with exhaustion. "The one place he never went into was the bathroom. So it became my shelter."
"Was it the call that frightened you?"
You shrugged a shoulder. "It only solidified the fact this wasn't a dream. I am both glad and frustrated they are finding her. I only wish I was with them." You closed yoru eyes and whispered, "She will be so scared."
Spencer pulled back more of the curtain but kept it drawn enough to keep you in the shadows. He caught your eye and asked with a soft voice.
"May I join you?"
You gazed up at him and just looked for a fraction of a beat before nodding, scooting over a bit.
The tub wasn't huge but it was on the longer side. Spencer stepped in, his bare feet squeaking on the porcelain. He sat himself down with his back to the other end of the tub so he could look at you as you two spoke.
"Should I have not let you hear the news?"
You shook your head, gazing at him again. "No. I'm glad you did. I just wish I could do more than sit here and wait. It's agonizing. Though I'm sure her parents feel worse."
It was Spencer's turn to shake his head. "You have done far from nothing, (Y/n). You brought us to Becky, Natasha, and Eliza. Three families will have their daughters back. And soon to be four. They will find her."
Suddenly Spencer instantly regretted telling you that the moment tears started streaming down your face, your eyes squeezing shut. He reached out and took your good hand, his thumb caressing your knuckles.
"Hey, what is it? You know you can talk to me, right? You're safe."
You hiccuped, bitting back a sob. "I am safe yes, but what about all those girls who came and went in the past three years I was in that house!" Your voice had started out soft but then grew. "I should have helped them. All those daughters. All those families plagued with grief!" You were nearly shouting now.
Spencer didn't wait to ask this time. He rached across and pulled you into his arms. Then, as carefully as he could, he laid down in the tub, pulling you with him. Surprisingly, the two of you fit perfectly, with your head on his shoulder and his arm around you. He held your fingers as your casted wrist rested on his chest. His other hand stroked your hair as he held you close, your tears falling on his neck and shirt.
"You can't forget that you too are a victim of this terrible crime. The fact you are as well put together as you are after being subject to what went on in that home for three years is amazing within itself. Those other girls are not your fault. You didn't bring them there. You didn't do anything to them. You kept yourself safe. And by doing so, you now have saved not only four other lives but all the lives that would have been taken or lost had you not acted now." Spencer closed his eyes and shifted you closer. "You have done an amazing thing. Don't let the past eat you up and steal you away from the good things that are happening now. He would only be winning even while locked up."
You nodded your head and closed your eyes, feeling the warmth of being held, truly held with real concern, care, and gentleness. You never wanted to move from this spot. You never wanted to be parted from the one person that you felt knew you and truly cared about you. So you finally let your body relax and let your mind clear of all your thoughts to focus on the one thing that brought you hope.
But you had to ask him one thing.
"Spencer?"
"Hmmm?" The rumble of his voice in his chest echoing in your ears.
"May I please go with you once they find her?"
Spencer didn't answer for a while and you got scared you made him mad with such an absurd question. You've made that mistake in the past. But then what felt like a kiss on your head made your eyes snap open just in time to grow wide at his words.
"On one condition."
You didn't move, afraid it was a dream.
Spencer shifted, resting his chin on your head, his hand on his chest continuing to play with your fingers. "You have to stay back by the cars with the other officers. I don't want to risk you seeing the unsub. And him, you. Ever again."
You closed your eyes and smiled, nodding as you imagined Danielle running out to meet you, her eyes bright and her smile wide as you opened your arms to take her home.
"Alright," you whispered, your conscious now satisfied and therefore ready for you to sleep, "I will stay back."
"Thank you," Spencer whispered.
You smiled weakly as you whispered back. "And thank you, Spencer Reid."
There it was again, that soft kiss on your head. But it sent you into a sleep you never thought you could ever have again filled with such peace and safety. The space in Spencer's arms quickly becoming the most comfortable place in the world.
Oi...that took longer than I planned...why me hahaha anywho there ya are xD I really hope that didn't suck
