Goodnight

Spencer took a deep breath as he held you in his arms, your head resting on his chest as he played with your hair. His heart warmed at the feeling of your calm breathing and the soft touch of your arm around his middle.

You were slightly sick, your breathing a bit labored and your head filled with a cold. With great persuasion and a bit of bribery, he got you to take some sleeping medicine and then you were out like a light. He loved how cuddly you got when you were feeling under the weather. Though he tells people he isn't much of a cuddler he likes to with you. So he took it when he could get it.

He just kissed your brow when the sound of something hitting the house made him snap to attention. Not wanting to disturb you, Spencer lifts his head and strained his ears to hear for anything else. But after a solid minute of waiting and hearing nothing but your labored breathing, he closed his eyes and sighed, resting his head back down on his pillow.

Not a moment later he heard it again. But this time the sound of shattering glass followed. You let out a small noise as you snuggled closer to him, oblivious to Spencer's heightened awareness as he lifted his head again to hear and try to spot what was going on.

But being back in the master bedroom, far from the main part of the house, the young BAU agent couldn't see anything. He only listened as footsteps echoed through the night, each step making his heart pound with anticipation. Hopefully the intruder won't become to the back of the house because Spencer didn't want to wake you or put you in harm's way.

Spencer jumped and winced as he heard this books be thrown off their shelves. The kitchen was being ransacked and he could hear them moving all the furniture. But it was the second set of footfalls that made him hold his breath. The second intruder was closer and unnervingly knew the house well enough to know where they were going.

The sound of the bedroom door opening sent chills down his spine. Through the dark with only the light of the moon seeping through the blinds on the window for light, Spencer could make out the silhouette of a slight person standing at the foot of the bed. Instinctivly, Spencer held on to you as if that would keep you safe.

Before he could say anything the figure held up a gun, pointing it at your sleeping form. "Get up and kneel on the ground."

It was a woman. Already Spencer was running every case through his head that may have had an accomplice or a loose end with a sister, cousin, girlfriend, wife or fiance. But nothing came up. But he was finding it was proving difficult to think much of anything as he kept an eye on the gun pointed at you. He gently detached himself from you and knelt down like they said.

The woman intruder flinched as you let out a nasty cough. It didn't sound good at all. Once you stilled the stress in the room returned. The gun in the woman's hand steadied and her attention turned back to Spencer. Her eyes searched his face as much as his mind searched past cases.

"Now that I have you where I want you, I need you to do a little something for me."

Spencer closed his eyes and then opened them, looking up at her through angry brows, refusing to answer. All he cared about was your labored sleeping form on the bed. The masked woman fidgeted under his gaze.

"Dr. Ried, do you not remember me?"

Spencer continued to stare.

"I was the sister of the woman who was killed protecting me. From you and your so called agents of protection. She wasn't hurting anyone!"

Spencer's eyes widened. This was Diana Ryans. He remembered that case but that wasn't the BAU who came in. Spencer was at one of the hearings for the case of the shooting and was chosen as the ranking official to sign off on the verdict. Pleading the shooter innocent in a case of alarmed reflex. With his name on the case, he wasn't surprised he was targetted.

But this was possibly the worst possible timing. Why don't killers chose to attack when it's convenient for everyone.

Impatient, Diana took a step forward pressing the gun to Spencer's forehead. "I am going to assume you remember. Now. You are going to give me the case file clearance code."

Spencer licked his lips. "It was an accident. Going after those men will only make you feel worse."

Diana ripped off her mask and pressed the gun harder against his forehead. "Shut up! You either tell me or you get to feel the pain I felt when someone I loved was ripped from me."

Spencer closed his eyes and swallowed. He opened them again, meeting her hard gaze. "You only think that will scare me. My wife doesn't like to be woken up. Especially when she is sick."

There was the sound of a gun cocking and Diana froze. Spencer relaxed slightly and took the opportunity to take the gun pointed at him and stand. You smirked through your throbbing headache as you kneeled on your bed, pointing the gun at the woman threatening your husband's life.

"Did you really think two trained agents wouldn't have weapons in our room?" You sneered as you steadied your shaking hands.

Diana kept quiet as she glared at you while spencer cuffed her with a spare set of cuffs in the side table drawer. Spencer could see how hard you were trying to look brave. But honestly, he couldn't love you more. If it weren't for you, he would have had to give her the code. The sound of footsteps coming made you switch your attention to the bedroom door. A larger man looking figure stepped through the doorway and upon seeing you with a gun he drew his own.

"We have her cuffed. Give up. Put down your weapon," you ordered. The man didn't move. You shook your head. "Idiots." And you shot him. But just in the leg.

The man when down with a cry and you flopped on the bed. Breathing hard you closed your eyes and let your body rock with loud hard coughs. Spencer put Diana in the closet so she couldn't run and came to your side. He moved hair from your face and took the gun from your hands.

"I love you," he cooed as you leaned into his touch. "You did an amazing job. Relax."

You closed your eyes and took a deep breath. Knocking sounded through the house and your eyes widened as you tried to sit up. But Spencer was faster, taking your shoulders and gently pushing you down then covered you with the blanket.

"Shhh, it's alright. It's just Morgan. I got an alert to him while you shot that guy." He leaned down and kissed your forehead. "Rest. I will be right back."

The rest of the night was a blur. Morgan and Hotch came and took the two intruders off your hands and took statements from Spencer. You were too sick and a bit out of it to say anything helpful. Hotch made sure the two of you were alright before packing everybody up and leaving Spencer to take care of you.

Spencer closed the bedroom door behind him before settling next to you. You woke up just enough to place a kiss on his cheek and snuggle close. "Is everything alright now?"

Spencer sighed, looking down at you feeling your fever climb through your clothes. "Yes. Everything is alright. But I wish you hadn't played hero. Now you are going to be sick for a bit longer."

You smirked with your eyes closed. "Then maybe you shouldn't play damsel in distress."

Spencer laid there, stroking your hair. He thought you had fallen asleep but saw that you weren't when you sat up and looked at him, touching his face. He was startled to see tears in your eyes and your chin was quivering.

"Waking up sick is no fun. Waking up sick to see your husband with a gun to his head is horrific." You closed your eyes causing tears to fall. Spencer brushed them away as you continued to talk. "I don't mind our jobs too much. But when they interfere with my personal life like that it makes me regret joining."

Not knowing what to say, Spencer folded you in his arms, rocking you slightly. He kissed your hairline, your cheek then your neck. You sniffed, relaxing on him as you let out a breath. "Please promise me I won't wake up to something like that again."

Spencer nodded, kissing your shoulder. "I promise. Now try to sleep."

You nodded, getting into a more comfortable position. But before spencer fell asleep you kissed his cheek, then snuggled to him. "I love you too. Goodnight."

Spencer smiled, the weight of the recent ordeal slowly falling away. "Goodnight."
