10. Code Black.

Leo entered Cade's office and dropped the CT scan results on Cade's table.

"Told her?" Cade asked.

"Sure."

"What is going on between Ben and Mia? She was pretty comfortable when Ben entered.  Leo thought as he sat.

"You alright?"

"Just bothered about something."

"What?"

"I think there's something between them."

"Them? Who?"

"Um... Never mind."
Why ask Cade? He'd definitely say I'm saying meaningless things.

"Never mind?"

"Yeah, I've forgotten you don't watch Open Heart." He lied.

"I don't watch movies."

"Duh... I know, I just forgot."

"I have a feeling you're lying. How could a movie possibly bother you? Something's between who and who?"

"What part of never mind is so difficult to understand, Cade??"

"Fine, you may use the door."

"Ain't passing through the wall before."

They both burst out laughing.

                 •••••••

Cade started to get ready for work. He brought out his stethoscope.

Mia and who?
His thoughts queried.

A fading memory swiped through his mind.

The next time I see you and her together, I'm going to kill you!! His father's voice echoed.

A knock on his door drifted him out of his thoughts.

"Come in, please."

The Lady who just left Mia's office stepped in.

"Hi" She muttered.

"You are not here for treatment... Are you?" Cade asked, taking a quick glance at her. He gets irritated by indecent dressing.

"No. I'm Selena Woods."

"Okay?"

"Your dad should've told you about me." She mumbled.

"Why??"

"I'm your fiancee."

Oh no!

She dropped her bag on his table and sat opposite him.

"Can we do this later? I have work, please."

"Okay, honey, I'll wait in the reception." She said as she picked up her bag.

"Honey?"

She stood up and left his office.

"Is... is that the person I'm getting married to? Why in the world did Dad do this to me?"

He stood up, took the CT scan results, and glanced at it for a while.

"This is nice. But she has to be taken care of really fast."

He held it and came out of his office.

He met two female nurses in his corridor. They were waiting for him. They carried a tray of drugs and injections.

"Good morning, Dr. Cade. They greeted, admiring him.
His sleek face, perfectly molded jaw, and ocean-deep eyes got them always.

"Morning, Let's go."

They headed to Vip Ward 4 where the Ataxia Patient was admitted.

He knocked and they entered. He was surprised to meet her alone.

"Good morning ma'am. How's your health? And where's your son?" Cade asked as he moved closer to her.

She tried to talk but ended up stammering.

"Your son didn't mention stammering yesterday...Are you feeling any better?"

She tried to nod her head but wasn't successful.

"Anyway, Nurse Anne should give her the injections while Nurse...." He pointed to the second nurse.

"Why do I always forget your name?"

"Isabella, Sir." She beamed a smile.

"Nurse Isabella, you record her vitals with me. I don't think she's improving."

"Okay, Sir." They replied.

Isa moved closer to Cade while Anne carried the tray of drugs and injections to the woman's table. She dropped and arranged them.

Isa brought out the record book with a pen.

Cade walked to where the woman placed her head and noticed she was still trying to say something.

What's wrong? He thought.

He moved his ear nearer to her lips.

"Ma'am please can you speak a bit louder? I can't hear you."

"Ch..ch...ch.." She stuttered.

"Ch...What? Chair? You want to sit on the chair??"

"N...No..my... Ch...che.."

"Your ch.. chips? Cherry? Chewing gum? Is it food??"

"No..chest..chest."

"Your chest? What's wrong? Does it ache?"

She began to close her eyes slowly.

"Ma'am??" Cade called.

"Sir, as I was about to give her the injection, I saw some bloodstains on her hands," Anne shrieked.

"Bloodstains? Let's open her up." Cade said in alarm.

They raised the woman's blanket and found out she was bleeding.

"Oh, God! Where's she bleeding from?"
Isa asked in shock.

Cade traced where the blood came from. It was her chest.

Her chest...what she tried to say.

She lay lifeless on the bed.

"Ma'am?"

"Code blue!!!!" Nurse Anne screamed as she ran out of the ward.

Cade placed his stethoscope on her chest and sighed.

"She's dead... It's Code black!" Cade replied, sadly. That was his second time losing a patient.

"She was stabbed. And where's this her so-called son?" He thought in anger.

Some Doctors rushed in, including Mia.

"Cade, what's wrong? Can't we defibrillate? Leo said, breathing heavily as he ran into the ward.

"No, she was stabbed in the heart,"  Isa replied.

"Stabbed? Who could have done this to an old woman?"

The Doctors left. Whenever it is code black, they run to check who it is and if they don't know the person, they leave immediately.

Only Leo and Mia stayed behind with Cade.

Is this how easily people die? Mia thought sadly.

She moved closer to the dead woman's body.

She studied it closely, not minding Cade's presence. Cade looked at her for a while, he then looked away.

The woman's death really shocked him.

She looked at the big, stab wound. It was 4 centimeters wide.

"The person that did this is either very skilled or knows medicine," Mia stated.

"Why'd you say so?" Leo questioned, moving closer to her.

"The person got the heart, perfectly."

"That's awfully true. It kinda makes me want to think the person is close to us."

"But why kill a poor, old woman? She's too old to even offend a soul." Mia said.

Isa came with a piece of white fabric and covered the woman's body from head to toe.
She then left.

"Hmm."

"Who did she come with yesterday? Mia asked.

"I think she came with her son," Leo replied.

"And where is he?"

"I don't know too."

"Something's off."

"I know."

Leo looked at Cade, sadness, anger, and pain were written all over his face.

"You shouldn't feel bad, Cade, this isn't the first death you've witnessed.

"I know, this one just hurts a lot. How can people kill people?"

Mia looked at him.

"Just take heart, dude," Leo replied.

Cade rested his back on the wall.

"You can feel hurt. It'll heal up soon, trust me. Was once there." Mia said, facing Cade.

"Really? What happened?" Leo replied.

Mia looked at Cade.

"A man I really loved
suddenly stopped talking to me. And ignored me like I didn't exist."

Cade looked at Mia and their eyes met.

"That's unfair," Leo said.

"I know, right?"

"Don't you know where he stays or his contact or anything?"

"I know where he works but I don't care about that anymore. Because I'm all healed now."

"Yes, move on. He does not deserve you!"
