Chapter 4 ✅

I kissed my mate, Pam, goodbye and climbed into a Jeep with my father and grandfather.

Marcus says, "When we get there, the first thing we need to do is just head to the sheriff's office. I will play the grieving brother and demand to see my brother. "

"Granddad, why not go to the coronary first? We skip the sheriff's office?"

"When I went online, the sheriff was heading up the investigation. I think it would look more authentic if we demand answers from him.  Then we get permission to see his house. If hunters get involved, we can be seen legally entering the house. Until the will is found, we don't have much say."

Thomas replies, "I know Casey already has our legal council working on everything. Plus, I requested him to send our tech team in to go over all the files from Uncle Victor. Brent does some IT, but they can access hidden files and even go into the dark web. "

"I asked Brett to double the security for the family if we decide to bring them there. However, I do not feel comfortable having our mates and family there until we assess the situation. I did tell him to wait until he hears from me before heading there."

Just then, my phone rang. I saw it was Uncle Gordon, dad's brother. I pressed the button, and he was on speaker phone through the tooth, "Hello, Uncle Gordon. I got dad and grandad with me."

"Did you call about Uncle Victor's death?"

"I should have known you see the paper. We do have a potential problem. We are heading there to check it out and wanted to ask if you want to meet us there."

"What kind of problem? Am I going to be there as family or council?"

Grandad replied, "It will be both. Your mom stated it won't be shit hitting the fan, but the whole damn fertile plant exploding."

Gordon starts cursing, "I can be there in about 2 hours. Where do you want to meet?"

I reply, "We will be there in 1-1/2 hours. I am sure there is a diner. We will get some coffee, and when you get there, we will go together to the sheriff's office. "

"We'll order something to eat. I haven't had lunch yet, and it will be almost supper time by the time we arrive." We then hang up and stay quiet for the rest of the trip, thinking about what we will hit when we get to his town.

We drive into town and follow GPS to the sheriff's office. We see a sign for a diner about half a block past it. I send a text of the address to Uncle Gordon. We then walk inside.  He responded order me a double cheeseburger with fries. I left without eating lunch, and I was starved. Plus, it's getting close to supper time."

We walk into the diner, and a girl who looks about 19 calls out the counter, "Grab a seat. Be with you as soon as I finish this order." We see her carry a tray of food to another table.

We go to an empty table and pick up a menu off the table. The waitress walks over, "I am Margie. What can I get you to drink."

I reply, "Right now, some coffee sounds good. Can I order two of your bacon double cheeseburger medium rare meals?" I glance at my watch, "arrange for it to be served in about 25 minutes. That's when my uncle should be arriving."

Dad replies, "I will have a coffee and the same meal."

Granddad replied, "I will have the same meal, but make my coffee decaf."

"While waiting for your 4th person, would you like me to bring an appetizer? Today's special is nachos and queso dip."

"That sounds good." Just then, my phone rang.
I glance at my phone, "it's my wife." I answer it, "hello."

Pam said, "I was able to book three cabins. Martha Mathis is the owner of the cabin and the diner in town. She knew Uncle Victor. She was willing to put the name under my maiden name so the press wouldn't get wind of us. She said her granddaughter, Margie, had the keys and directions at the diner."

"We already met the granddaughter. We are at the diner waiting for Gordon to arrive."

"Well, miss you, and let us know what you learned."

"Miss and love you too. Will call with news once we know something." I hung up just as Margie came back with coffee and nachos. "Thank you, Margie."

Margie replies, "You're welcome. Can I get you anything else before I check on other tables?"

"My wife told me I was to pick up keys and directions to the cabins. She said Mrs Mathis left the keys and directions with you.  It's under the name Pam Bueller."

She looked sad for a minute, "Grammy told me to expect you. She said to tell you dinner is part of the fee."  She then leans down and whispers, "I am sorry about your uncle. If not for him, my siblings and I wouldn't be here."

Grandad asked, "How old are you?"

Margie smiles and replies, "I am 17. I turn 18 next month." Well, I got to refill some cups. Enjoy your nachos, and I will bring out the burgers when your 4th person arrives.

She turns and walks away, and Grandpa says, "Well, at least she is human. This is confirming he helped other species."

"Yes, but her scent has a very faint floral smell, and that paperwork puts her a year older than the others on the list. We only have three wolves we know of for now, but as they dig deeper into the files, he might find more that would turn this year.  We are not sure if any others have shifted."

Granddad adds, "They most likely won't know what is happening. They could be mistaken for rouges. I wonder what the hell my brother was thinking."

Dad replied, "Births have been declining, so he was trying to save the race." Sigh, "he should have gone about it differently."

Granddad looks toward the door, "your brother just pulled up." We all look toward the door and stand up when he walks in. We all hug and welcome him.

We sit down, and Margie brings over more chips and nachos. That is when I realized we ate the whole plate. "Your meal will be up in a few minutes." She looked at my uncle, "What would you like to drink?"

"I will have a Coke."

"Sure thing." Then she leaves to go get it."

Gordon asks, "What happened to Uncle Vic?"

"We don't know all the details, but let's wait until we are at the cabin to discuss it."

Just then, Margie came back with his drink. She also set 3 keys on the table with a map. "Grammy said to give you this." She whispers, "She said to tell you that you have an appointment with the sheriff in an hour but cannot see the coroner until 9:00 tomorrow morning." She says in a regular voice, "If you have any questions, give her a call.  Her numbers are at the bottom of the map, and I also added my cell phone.  Grammy only has a landline."

Just then, a bell rang, and I heard a male voice call, "Order up."

"That should be yours." She turns and walks away to get our order.

Gordon watches her walk away from us. "I didn't know fairies were in this area." We all turn and look at Margie.

I look at Dad as he replies in a whisper, "Yep, shit about to hit the fan. That explains the slight floral scent. Never met a fairy before."
