The First One I Left
I was a child
And he was a child
In that kingdom by the sea
Where we played a game
That was more than a game
The strongest time we felt free
I dreamed of roses and happily-ever-afters
And he plotted betrayal and battlecry
And we had the most fun
That has ever been done
In that kingdom by the sea
On that Air Force base by the shining Virginia sea
I had barely turned seven
Soon he would be seven
And make-believe was the food of our souls
(We laughed and we loved—
A childish, innocent love—
And we cried and we hated for we were still foals)
But that fateful day when I was a child
I was told we were going away
And finally I said
to my bosom-buddy, my friend
We're leaving the kingdom by the sea
I shall see you no longer by the shining sea
We fled our sea, our beautiful sea
And traded it for frozen beauty
The country's icebox was ours,
My new playground for hours
But now the kingdom was all in my head.
For my play-partner was gone,
Our dreams were all dead,
And never would I return
To that kingdom by the sea
To that Air Force base by the shining Virginia sea.
Many thanks to Edgar Allen Poe's "Annabel Lee" for inspiring much of the layout of this poem. Is that anyone else's favorite Poe-m? Here's the link if you want to read it:
AN:
If you know Jesus Christ as your Savior, then let us praise God together!
If not, then I pray that you come to recognize Him as the only way of salvation from your sins, which earn you God's wrath and just punishment in Hell. Jesus is the Way, the Truth, and the Life, and no one will go to Heaven but through repentance from their sins and believing in Him.
If you have any questions, comment or PM me! I'd love to talk. <3
God bless!
