Chapter 10
Viane
This is probably gonna sound weird but...
"I want you to be Marriane."
There's a beat and his demeanor changed. His smile faded into an irritated frown only Marriane could pull off beautifully. One of his hand went to his waist, hips slanting in a way any teenage girl would do.
It looks funny on him but the way he did it so flawlessy is scary.
"He-hey, Marriane." I waved at him (her?) rather stiffly. "Can I... ask you something?"
"Just get on with it!" he answered harshly. The new expression on his face is so foreign that it made me uncomfortable.
I took tiny steps forward.
"As your friend, I was just wondering--"
He backhanded me out of nowhere. It's force made me turn and I almost lost my balance.
"What's the big idea, bitch?!" I addressed Mr. Wae but he just rolled his eyes at me, still carrying on as Marriane.
"I want you to act friendly with me!" my voice came out wobbly.
What the fuck? My hand went up to my throbbing cheeks and my vision became blurred as tears started pouring out. Why can't anything go my way? All I wanted is for her to be my friend. Why can't he do that?
"Make Marriane my friend!"
"I hate to break it to you but..." his frown turned into his usual smile, "Miss Marriane had never been friendly with you, so I really have no basis."
My eyes grew wide.
Never been friendly with me? But--but she said she's my friend. She's just moody that's all--
"But this however," he pointed at my current state, "is heavily supported."
I bit my shaking lips, my eyes averted his gaze.
That can't be it. There might be something. Something that resembles friendship even a little spark of acknowledgement.
I held my breath and I searched my mind.
Just something. Give me something.
We were smiling but she wasn't looking at me, I was at the very end of the trio, tailing them.
Is that good enough?
"She was using you, Miss Viane."
"Shut up!"
I don't wanna hear that.
We were taking pictures. We all smiled. The camera flashed and they all came out fine but I was cut out of the photo.
They didn't do that on purpose, did they?
"She treated you badly."
Shut up. Shup up. Shut up!
"Marrinne, we're friends right?"
"What? Sorry I didnt hear you."
"Friends. We're friends right?"
"Uh-- yeah, sure. We're friends."
Is that it? Is that the best proof I've got?
I never remembered it sounding like this. Have I been so--
"She never considered you as a frien--"
"SHUP THE FUCK UP!"
He clammed up immediately.
"I got tired of you acting as Marriane. You're clearly not cut out to be her. I made up my mind, I want you to act as that weirdo Sina, now."
"Why would you--"
"Now!" I yelled my hands rounding into fists.
He surrendered, letting out a breath. Suddenly his expression sunked. His smile is gone, replaced by a plain, reserved feature. Just like that Sina.
"Hey, Viane," he started, voice weak and airy. "What do you want to talk--"
I raised my feet and sunked it into his stomach. He let out a gargled sound and caved in, holding his stomach as he kneeled in pain.
My jaw clenched and I approached him, looking down.
"You know what? I've always hated you! You're a weakling and a nobody!"
He kept his head low.
"You pisses me off and I've always wanted to do this you!"
I was about to punch him in the face but he managed to catch my wirst, my fist not making contact.
"What?! You're supposed to take all my beating, you little shit!"
I tried to force myself out but he held my wrist tighter.
"Let go--"
"I'm sorry, Miss Viane, but I won't let you disrespect Miss Sina." He stood up, he never let go of me and was now the one looking down, his darkening eyes peering mine. "She is not weak. I've met her myself and I know that she is strong. And if you think you've got a chance of beating her, then you're horribly mistaken."
I stopped struggling and right at that moment, as he gently let's go of my wrist-- Adam's words flashed in my mind.
"Oh, really? Some great friends you got there."
A tear ran down my cheek.
That's not fair. You guys are ganging up on me.
-----
The sun is setting. It's orange rays covered the whole place; it's origin lining the horizon. I stared at it as I walked with Marriane and the others. They came back for me as promised but came a little too late. I stayed with that creepy guy for an hour and a half and when I finally came out they just pushed all their newly bought things onto me. Isn't this...bad? They won't even let me walk the same pace as them I'm always left behind.
"She was using you."
I stopped walking. They heard the rustling of the bags came into a halt and they looked back.
"Viane, hurry up. I wanna try out my new clothes as soon as possible," Marriane said.
"Hey." I stared at her, brows creasing.
I hate Mr. Wae. How dare he put doubt into my mind.
"Can I ask you something?"
She flicked her hair to the side, growing impatient.
"Get on with it."
"As a friend, how can you describe me?"
"Uhmm." Her finger found it's way on her lower lip, she looked up in deep thought.
"Well, I could say you're obedient," she said nonchalantly.
Obedient?
"That's not how you describe a friend." My eyes became daggers. "That's how you describe a dog."
She shrugged.
"If that's how you see it," she added then started walking again, expecting me to follow.
Follow? Just like a dog.
I think I see it now, Mr. Wae. It was all my fault.
I thought taming the apex predator will keep me out of harms way but it turns out that by doing so, I just sold myself for them to mame on. I was so afraid that what happened to me back in elementary and middleschool will happen again in high school so I took this risky move. What a fool.
I laughed.
They looked back at me and stared as if their watching a crazy person.
"What the fuck are you doing?" Jamie asked.
"Hey, Marriane." I looked at her, eyes crazed and smiling."You said I'm obedient, right?"
She questioned with her eyes.
"Is this obedient enough?" I threw some of the bags. It flew down the grassy slope, stumbling as it crumpled.
"What the fuck are you doing bitc--"
"Oh--how about this?!"
I threw another.
"And this?!"
And another.
"AND FUCKING THIS?!"
I kicked the last one and it thumped hard down below.
"HOW ABOUT THAT?! IS THAT OBEDIENT ENOUGH? OR DO YOU WANT ME TO THROW YOU TO--
"Bitch!"
She grab a hold of my hair and pulled.
"Fuck you!"
I did the same and pulled harder. Jamie slip out of nowhere and separated my hand away from Marriane's head. She slapped me soon after, it's impact resounding. I growled and punched her on the face.
I screamed and ran towards Marriane again but I was pushed by Celine, her momentum strong due to running headfirst.
I yelped and I lost my balance. I was thrown out of the street and was in the air.
Everything slowed down as I fall. The three of them are looking at me with disdain but I couldn't care less.
You know, I never intented to be friends with them at the very start. I was just determined to use them as shield against prying people but as times passed, a thought grew in my head.
Will we be friends?
How much fun would it be if we were actual friends?
I was so desperate that even her half- assed answer sounded like wonders to me.
I chuckled to my self.
Maybe I know from the very start that they weren't really my friends but I was in denial to give it much of a though.
Time went back again and I closed my eyes as I descended even more. My back hit the grassy hill and I rolled down the slope.
