CHAPTER 27
It's been two weeks now, Al-amin was nothing but loving to her, he calls her everyday, text her, always create time for her; albeit he's always busy. They planned their future together, how their marital life'd be.
Imagining themselves in the kitchen, making breakfast, having dinner together, leaving for work together. The housemaid they'll hire, how their children education will be, how romantic and scintillating their marital home will be. They never for once thought of having a problem, which is very obvious.
She was sleeping, albeit she have a morning lecture, she didn't sleep till 4am yesterday, and it was all his fault.
Mama barged in the room, standing by her side. "Won't you wake up Ummi, you said you have lectures by 9am, it's already 8:30am." Mama said, removing the duvet she covered herself with.
She groaned and yawed to the otherside, she really need to sleep, she wish she hadn't told Mama about her lectures. Being a Biochemist is not easy, and her being a late comer, alot of work awaits her.
Mama hit her shoulder "Ummi! You should wake up, it's like you don't take your studies serious." Mama yelled, groaning. "That's why i so much like Husna, she's not like you. She's very docile when it comes to sleep." She added, making her way out of the room. "If you like; wake up, if you don't; continue sleeping. This is the last day I'll come to wake you up." She added and barged the door.
She groggily lay on her bed, it somersaults in her that they're having Maths1321; the lecturer is a no nonsense man, he's very strict.
She hissed and pulled herself up, making her way to the bathroom. It took her 10mins, she quickly dress up, wear her hijab, apply kohl and exited the room, scuttling.
"Come and have your breakfast, Ummi." Mama said, halting her at the door. She wanted to decamp from the house, she knows Mama will force her to take her breakfast, of which she's not used to. She usually take her breakfast at noon.
"Mama, I am already late, I'll buy something there." She said, grimacing. She bumbling, to show how in a hurry she is.
"Just have the snack my dear." Mama said sweetly, thrusting a plate of snacks to her.
She can't say no to this sweet side of Mama, she collected the plate and sit on the chair beside her.
"Bye Mama." She yelled and sprinted out of the house.
She met Malam Ummaru at the parking lot, she greeted him and hopped in.
"Hello Azizah, where is the venue please?" She said, suddenly when Azizah picked the call.
"Hall D, Chemistry department." Azizah answered, she murmured 'Thank you' and ended the call. Azizah is her only friend, she's very sweet and caring.
There was a hush ride before they arrive at their destination. "I'll call you when I'm through." She said to Malam Ummaru and scuttled to where her course mates where sitted.
They said their pleasantries and she sits beside Azizah. "Hey gurl." She said and flop beside her.
"I know why you're late." Azizah said, smirking.
"You must surely know it, it's because of him." Ummi said, smiling sheepishly.
"Who's him?" Azizah teased.
"Al-amin now, bad girl." Ummi laughed and smacked her shoulders.
The lecturer came, and they started their lectures, which is very interesting. Because Malam Nalado is very hilarious, albeit he's strict. That's why they understand his lecture.
***
She's now his friend, more like his girl. They always hang out with him, and she always find an excuse to tell Yaya. Talking of Yaya; he's now totally in love with her, they planned on telling their parents about their ralationship when they go back to Nigeria.
"Hey L." She said, side hugging him. That had been their usual way of greeting.
"Hello L, what took you so long today?" He curiously asked, hoping not to hear what he thought had dallied her.
"Ohh... I had to wait for Yaya, that's why." Laila said, and flopped beside him. "You look handsome Amigo." She pinched his nose.
"I don't like that your brother." Laith grimaced, yawing his gaze from her side.
"Why L?" She asked, bamboozled. She see no reason of disliking him, he's just her friend, and nothing more.
"Because he love you." He sterned, looking more frustrated.
"How does loving me makes a reason of disliking him? Of course he love me, and I love him too." She guffawed, finding the moment scintillating. Daisy told her Laith love her, but she want him to say it himself. She want to be his girlfriend, though Yaya is the one she love. But being the popular guy's girlfriend will cost her more respect.
"I don't care!" Laith snapped.
"Does this mean you'll not attend my wedding Amigo?" She asked, feigning hurt. She's using this way to probe him confess his love.
"That's if it will be here in the UK."
"It will be in Nigeria of course, don't be barmy now. I'm a Nigerian, you know it." She said, smiling mischieviously.
"Hell no! That's the last place I'll visit, don't you ever dream of me going to Nigeria. Don't ever say the name 'Nigeria' in front of me. It will never happen." He snapped and stood up, leaving her there, mouth agape.
"What's wrong with him and Nigeria?" She hushed and scuttled to catch up with him.
She opened her mouth to call his name, when someone closed her mouth with his hand, making her words stopping in her throat. She percieved his cologne, she realized it's her Corazón. Oh My God! Trouble in paradise! Her subconscious said.
She slowly lifted her eyes to his face, his expression is unreadable. He look frustrated but trying to suppress it with a gentle look. She surely know she's in for it.
Without uttering a word, he guide her to the bench they were sitting on. He looked at her, and yawed his gazed from her side. She noticed how his Adam's apple kept moving; trying to form a sentence, but he's procrastinating. It's obvious, he want to be as gentle as he could.
"Yaya, I'm sorry." She stuttered, holding his hands in a pleading way.
He looked at her, giving her a warning look; gesturing at their hands. She suddenly release his hand, looking hurt.
"Don't be suspicious please Yaya, it's not what you're thinking of. Trust me Mi Corazón." She said, making her best puppy face, fluttering her eyelashes, ostentatiously.
"You said I should'nt be suspicious? What of the hug? What of the hands entwination? What of the ostentatious talkings? And you can still say I should'nt be suspicious?" He snapped, his voice is an amalgamation of pain, jealousy and anger.
He opened his mouth, trying to snap at her, when her luscious lips coalesced with his dry ones. All hell broke loose! He could'nt mustered to stop her, something erupt from his head down to his toes, he could'nt comprehend what he's exactly feeling. She caught him unaware. Her lips.. Oh My God!
The kiss was light, but it emoted all the feelings she intended to emote. How her lips graced with his, they gravitated with so much emotions, feelings on them. The lips are glossy, it seems they're his lips goer.
All his anger vanished, it seems his words are guttural. The kiss made a vast effect on his. He controlled himself not to kiss her again, with aplomb. All he want now is her lips.
He looked at her, with an unreadable expression in his eyes; the expression that holds many feelings. He yearn for her lips, pleading for more. If not she's his sister, something would've happen now.
Without uttering a word, he traipsed to the bus stop, he need to be alone. His room is his only sanctum, he needs to be alone. She killed him, internally.
She stood there, almost regretting her actions, but seeing his situation; she believed it's worth it. For he will never bring up the issue again.
She yawed her gaze to where Laith followed, seeing him looking at her startled her. She thought he had left. He hissed and left the place. Ya Allah! I need your help.
***
She entered the parlour, looking shagged and frazzled. She flopped on the sofa, "Sulaiman, I'm home." She yelled, for she know he's in his room.
Minutes later, she heard his laugh. "See how you look, like a drowned cat." He laughed, sitting beside her. "How's the school Sissa." He added, sniggering.
"Help me with a plate of food Sulaiman, I'll gist you later." She said, removing her hijab. She's knackered.
"Ok my lazy ass Sissa." Sulaiman said and he move to the dining area.
"Eat to your fullest." He said, thrusting a plate full of Dambu to her, with a chilled Zobo drink. "I know you won't eat even half of the place before you started shouting 'Sulele, come and take the plate'." He mimicked her voice, laughing hard.
She didn't utter a single word, she just gave him the 'I'll have your time later' look, and dug in her delicious Dambu.
"Sulele take the plate." She yelled, laughing. As she sprinted to her room.
"You won't stop this your running spree, Ummi." Ya Yusuf sighed.
"Hi Ya Yusuf, I'll be down in a jiffy." She yelled and entered her room.
She didn't hear from Al-amin since morning, she wondered what's wrong. She hope he's fine, because his actions show he has lamented. His actions emanates true love and affection.
She freshed up, wore her pyjamas, and hopped on her bed. She unlocked her phone to check if he viewed her text, to her utmost dismay; he saw the text, and he's even online. Why can't he reply me? It won't take up to a second to reply my text. He should have reply it, even if it will be laconic. He's back again at it.
***
He layed glumly on his, the feeling of her glossy lips embeded in his mind. He saw Aysha's text, but he's not in the mood to reply her back. All he need is Laila!.
He heard a small knock, he groaned and pulled himself to get the door. Seeing her in a full lenght hijab baffled him. He's humbugged. Is she not up to something again? Is she not trying to jumble his already grungy heart?.
He looked with awe, as she muttered her 'Salam' and sits on one of the sofas. He hushed 'Wa'alaikumus Salam' and sit on the next sofa, leaving a full gap between them.
"Yaya, I'm sorry." She muttered, fumbling with the hem of her hijab, avoiding his gaze.
"Hmm... that's always what you said. I told you to always create space between us, you didn't pay heed to what i said." He gruffed, fixing his gaze on the television.
"Yaya take." She said, thrusting her phone to him.
"What will i do with your phone?" He asked, bamboozled.
"You should call Hajia and tell her; we now love each other. They can even solemnize the wedding before we're back." Laila said, her voice emanating how sincere she is. "We can't avoid somethings if we keep living like this." She added.
He looked up, baffled, Is this the right decision to make? Are they not making a mistake? "Are you sure of what you're saying?" He asked, wanting to be sure.
"Yes Yaya, call her." She answered.
"As you said." Al-amin said, and dailed Hajia's number.
Hisbinal lahu wani'imal wakeel.
I never see this coming.
Whats wrong with Al-amin? Will he really call?
Hajia being the over sentimental she is; she can make them solemnize the wedding fa.
