51. The Truce to End it All
Grian stood in front of Scar's village. He, as always, admired Scar's handiwork at terraforming before heading to where he thought Dream would be. The mountain had been destroyed, so Dream, Scar, and others of the Eaglestars have moved back to their previous bases.
He knocked on a snail base's door, heart thumping in nervousness. Grian had an urge, a strong urge, to open his wings and fly away, to not and never ever face Dream ever again. After all, he had held a sword to the masked man's neck the last time they had met, Dream had tried to kill him, but instead killed Phil. Their relationship was definitely not the best at the moment, to say the least.
Whatever Grian had wanted to do, it was too late. Footsteps sounded, and the door creaked as the avian came face to face with Dream.
He had repaired his mask. The crack was still visible, but the white ceramic had been fixed. Grian gulped, remembering the cold emerald eyes that laid behind the mask. Dream was so young, but he had a kind of ferociousness Grian knew he would never have, even if he was the Dreamslayer.
To the avian's surprise, Dream wasn't hostile towards him at all. Instead, he seemed surprised to see Grian there. They stared at each other for a second before Dream moved aside. "Come in." He invited.
Bewildered, Grian stepped into Dream's base. The exterior was clearly Scar's work, but Dream had decorated the inside to his liking.
Everything was green. Lime green, forest green, pine green, light green, and a shade of emerald green that matched Dream's eyes. There were also spots of white and black, using the colors of Dream's mask and making it so that it looked like Dream belonged there. Which, when Grian thought about it, he did.
"Nice interior." Grian said, shuffling across the carpet (dark green) awkwardly.
Dream flushed. "Well, it's all green." He said awkwardly, standing awkwardly as well.
"No, I like it." Grian said honestly, taking in the drapings (leaf green). "It looks like you fit in there." He added, blinking at the bed (black with dark green swirls) and the blanket (white with light green streaks).
"Thank you." Dream said, letting the door close and striding over to Grian in a few long strides. For the first time, Grian noticed, and mused about how tall Dream was. (A/N: guys im getting gream vibes pls help this wasn't meant to be a ship book i literally just wanted wholesome interactions AHHHHHHHHHHHH)
"So, um, what wind blows you here?" Dream asked, sitting down at his desk (white) and starting to write on a piece of paper.
"The south one. Literally." Grian joked.
"Oh." Was the only thing Dream said.
Grian sighed, and then, mustering all his courage, he spoke. "Dream, on behalf of Wilbur, Tommy, Tubbo, Bdubs, and anyone else who fought against you, I apologize for the damage done to the Eaglestar's property, whether intellectual or physical. I hope you can forgive us."
Then he bowed. Biting the insides of his cheek, Grian bowed, and hoped that Dream wouldn't strike him down right then and there.
Instead, he was met with a string of laughter. Grian looked up cautiously and found Dream leaning back in his chair, laughing. "Apologize." He chuckled pounding his desk. "You-you want to apologize." A high-pitched, teapot noise sounded, and Grian looked around in alarm, searching for the sound, and a second later found the source to be Dream himself.
The masked man bended over, pounding his desk while squeezing all the air out of his lungs and causing the piece of paper to fall off. Concerned and curious, Grian caught the paper before it fell onto the floor and read the text.
Grian looked up from the letter, looking into the small, black eyes of Dream's mask. He blinked at Dream, and Dream stared back, unmoving and serious.
"So?" Dream asked. "Do you accept my apology?"
Grian glanced down at the letter and looked up to Dream again. His mind was swirling with questions and bewilderment, surprised at the masked man. Dream tilted his head, bemused. "Grian?"
Grian blinked soundlessly at Dream before breaking to a smile. "Yes. Yes, I do. Do you accept mine?"
"Yes." Dream said, standing up from his desk and holding out his hand. Grian arose as well, taking the warrior's hand with his own.
"Truce?" Grian asked hopefully.
"Truce." Dream confirmed, and to Grian's surprise, moved his mask to the side of his head, revealing his emerald eyes. When before those eyes were hard with anger, they were now glowing with warmth. Grian smiled at Dream, and he smiled back, with his mouth and his eyes.
Dream let their hands fall. "I'll write up a document for a formal truce. Tommy may take one of my lives for Phil's death, I am truly sorry." He bowed his head, and Grian saw the real regret in his eyes.
"Dream, don't worry!" Grian exclaimed, excited. "Phil's back. He's alive!"
"What?!"
~~~
All was well with the world.
The sun shone down on a once-bloodied battlefield, now covered with hundreds and thousands of flowers, hiding an avian's shedded lifeblood. A black and white skinned boy with matching hair hummed to himself as he watered the flowers, picking a bouncy yellow blossom for his best friend. His mismatched eyes travelled over the flowery ground, finding a soft-petalled, light purple flower to give to his other best friend, as Tommy insisted.
Said child was screaming as he was being chased by his brother with a blade, running from one side of the mansion to the other. The other brother watched this chase proceed with no intention to help, amused and wondering if his next song will be about the truce or the chase.
"WILBUR, YOU BETTERING FUCKING HELP ME RIGHT NOW!" Tommy screamed as he ran past his brother for the umpteenth time.
"How about no." Wilbur said blankly, his face emotionless but his mind scrunching up in laughter.
"No swearing in the house, Tommy." Their father reminded him, plucking a dark feather off his wings. "You know that Grian doesn't like it."
"Dad, you should stop plucking your feathers." Wilbur called above Techno's threats. "Grian said that it isn't good for you."
"GRIAN ISN'T HERE RIGHT NOW!" Tommy screamed in reply to Philza's scolding, who just shrugged.
"I beg your pardon." Grian said as he landed onto the carpeted floor, carrying a stack of papers in his arms. "I'm here now. What's happening?"
"Phil was plucking his feathers and Tommy swore again." Wilbur supplied, plucking a cord on his guitar, which he could now hear. Grian's arrival had calmed everyone down and deduced the noise level, which was impressive considering who was in the room. "Oh, and Techno started with his death threats again. So you know, just the usual." He shrugged.
"You SNITCH!" Tommy yelled, leaping towards Wilbur, who skillfully dodged to the side, allowing his little brother to fall flat on his face onto the coach.
"Oh, I wouldn't say that." Phil said lightly, hiding the dark feather underneath the table.
"Yeah, I bet everyone in a kilometer radius could hear you screaming, Tommy." Techno added, sitting down beside Philza.
"You LITTLE BI-" Tommy bellowed, but he was stopped by a sharp glare from Grian. "Bi-birito." He said weakly. "I meant birito, Grian."
"It's BUH-rito, you absolute child." Wilbur corrected with a smirk.
Tommy went to hold his middle finger up at his older brother, but a second, sharper glare from Grian stopped him again. "Sorry, G." He muttered before shooting a death glare at Wilbur, who laughed in Tommy's misery.
"Are those papers from Dream?" Techno asked, leaning forwards with interest as Grian placed the stack of paper on the desk.
"Right. Grian's penpals with Dream now." Tommy snorted.
"Don't say that, Tommy." Philza scolded.
"What?!" Tommy asked, turning to Phil. "They are getting all cozy and-"
"Tommy, Dream is crucial to a peace treaty." Grian said softly. "And he isn't a bad person. He truly feels bad about killing Phil, and has agreed to hand over one of his lives in consequence."
"Which you and Phil then refused." Tommy grumbled.
"Because we don't need another death in this world." Grian said sternly. "Tommy, we were lucky that Phil got to come back. There's no need to take away another life. There's no meaning to that at all. That's something your father and I both agreed upon." Phil nodded to show his support.
"When's the truce ceremony, G?" Wilbur asked.
"Soon." Grian said, turning to the stack of papers. "As soon as I read through the deal. I need to make sure that Dream didn't sneak anything suspicious in the documents." He sighed.
"I thought you trusted him?" Techno questioned.
"I do trust him." Grian said, putting on a pair of reading glasses. "But I have to make sure that everything is worded correctly. Even the slightest mistake could lead to a huge legal problem."
"Sure, sure, keep telling yourself that." Tommy rolled his eyes.
Grian stuck out his tongue at the boy, causing Phil to crack a smile before returning to his stack of papers.
~~~
The day arrived sooner than Wilbur thought it would. The truce ceremony was set a week after Phil's funeral would have been, but instead of being decorated with dark green and black, everything was in white and gold.
"You know, it kinda looks like a wedding." Tommy mumbled to Techno, who suppressed a smile.
"I'm like waiting for Grian to step out with a white dress and everything." Wilbur joked, earning a chuckle from Phil.
"It would be spectacular, I admit." Techno said.
Xisuma let out a sharp whistle, and the crowd quieted down almost immediately, turning towards the stage.
Grian stepped out, although not with a white dress, but with a professional black suit. The SBI turned towards Dream, expecting him to be wearing a white wedding dress. To their, and the Gream shipper's disappointment, he also wore a black suit. (A/N: hAhA fourth wall breaks BRRRRRRRRR)
Wilbur sighed, and Tommy pouted. Techno gave a small smile while Phil laughed, spreading his wings around his sons.
The crowd watched in silence as Dream and Grian met in the middle of the stage, in front of Xisuma, the one holding the ceremony. The two bowed at each other, Grian's wings falling over his side as he bowed.
Wilbur's eyes widened as he caught sight of Grian's gray feathers shining iridescent, bringing him back to that horrible, horrible night in the pit. He shook the memory away before the gray could invade his mind again, and focused again on Grian's wings. When Wilbur blinked again, though, the shining rainbows didn't disappear.
"Are you seeing that?" Techno whispered, and then Wilbur knew that it wasn't just him who saw the colors.
"Big G's feathers..." Tommy breathed. "They're fucking rainbow."
"Jesus..." Phil murmured, smiling. "I'm kinda jealous now."
"You've got the black feathers, Dadza." Tommy nudged Phil. "They're poggers as well." (I just stupidly realized that I haven't been using the words pog and o7 and kekw at ALL WTH IS WRONG WITH ME-)
Phil cracked a smile, and then Xisuma cleared his throat to speak. "Ladies and gentlemen, and anyone and everyone in between, today we are gathered here to witness the beginning of... uh... a new era..." He shuffled his papers, looking down with a confused look. "Who the heck wrote these?"
Wilbur raised a hand gingerly, smiling nervously. Xisuma glared at him playfully. "Well, you guys know that I'm not much of a speaker, so scratch the script, let's wing this speech." He said, grinning. "Wilbur, come take your long speech back."
Wilbur smiled sheepishly before taking the stack of papers from Xisuma, sticking out his tongue at the admin, which earned him a playful glare. "My speech is fine." He muttered, unable to suppress a smile.
"So, Grian and Dream are going to sign a peace treaty, and then we have a truce. That's basically it." Xisuma said. "Now for the terms and conditions..."
"To simplify it, Phil, as Tommy's parent, will give Dream one of the two music discs from Tommy's old world, and Dream will in turn give his word to keep peace with Tommy, not for the discs or anything in general. If his word is broken, it will be allowed for Tommy, or anyone he has given permission to, to take one of Dream's lives." Xisuma said. "Are the terms clear?"
"Yes." Dream and Grian chorused.
"Good. Now, say your vows." Xisuma ordered, and Wilbur smiled at the similarities of a wedding to this.
"I, Grian, representative of the Queen's Entourage and the legal guardian of Tommathy Innit, Wilbur Soot and Technobalde." He said, a proud smile on his face. "Agree to the terms that Xisuma, the treaty holder, has stated. I agree to sign the peace treaty, with full permission from Tommy himself."
Tommy, Phil, Wilbur and Techno grinned at each other. After simultaneous agreement from the four and doing some paperwork, Grian was now the official legal guardian of Tommy, Wilbur, and Techno, his authority coming only after Phil's as their biological father. It was not only a gesture of affection, but also, Phil mused, a backup plan in case he died again. Grian would have legal control over the three, and Phil knew that he fitted the role in their hearts as well.
Dream nodded. "I, Dream, representative of the Eaglestars, agree to the terms that Xisuma, the treaty holder, has stated. I agree to sign the peace treaty, with full permission to take one of my lives if this vow is broken." He pausd, and then, to everyone's surprise, took off his mask. "I show my full face to back my vows in this truce." He said, giving a sideways smile to George and Sapnap, who grinned at their friend's 'coming out'.
Grian was smiling too as he plucked a feather off his wings, dipped it into ink and signed his name onto the document. Dream copied him, using a pen.
"I now ask upon - what does the script say, Wilbur?" Xisuma cut himself off, shouting to Wilbur. "I forgot my lines!"
Wilbur flipped through the ten-page script. "I now call upon Philza Minecraft to give Dream the disc Cat, in honor of his cat, Patches!" He supplied, causing several chuckles from the crowd.
"Thanks!" Xisuma called back. "So, I now call upon Philza Minecraft, to give the disc Cat, in honor of his cat, Patches." He said, smiling.
"Your cat is so much better than you, Dream!" Tommy called, as Philza ascended the stage, standing beside Grian, who brushed their wings together in a form of affection. Dream held his middle finger up at the child, and with Grian's frown, the whole crowd dissipated with laughter.
"Oi!" Xisuma called. "Are we going to get on with the ermony? The sooner this is done, the sooner we can all get out of here. OI!"
He let out another one of those sharp whistles, and after a couple seconds, the laughter died down, the crowd turning their attention back to the admin with a couple stray chuckles and giggles.
"I, Philza Minecraft-" Phil began to speak, but Mumbo cut him off.
"Just get on with it, Phil!" The redstoner shouted. "Xisuma's getting impatient, that boke!"
"What did you call me?!"
After more laughter and a messy procedure, Phil gave Dream the disc, and Dream, in turn, gave Grian a green carpet, as 'a friendly gift to put in your mansion'. Xisuma, sighing, went home cursing Wilbur and his script, and the crowd scattered back to their respective bases.
Only the Dream Team, Grian and Sleepy Bois Inc stayed behind. Tommy glared at Dream, whose mask was still off, and Dream only gave a nod in response. Sure, they were at peace, but Tommy wouldn't forget the grudges that he held.
"I'm grateful that we're at a truce now." Phil said softly to Dream.
He nodded. "And I'm grateful that you are still alive, Philza. We were friends as much as we were enemies." He looked to the avian, asking for confirmation.
"Agreed." Phil said. "I'm happy that we could come to this agreement." He gave Dream a smile.
Dream returned the smile. "Same here. I think the hermits deserve peace. They aren't used to war like we are."
"You know, you're scary when you're angry." George noted to Grian, who laughed.
"I'd never thought that someone would say that to me." The builder acknowledged, smiling. "I'm kinda glad you felt that way."
"Don't you feed off of my misery!" George laughed, punching Grian lightly. The avian giggled under his breath and roared playfully before chasing George, who shrieked and ran away.
"Aren't you glad that this war is over, Techno?" Sapnap asked, laying on the grassy floor. Techno leaned on the tree beside him, watching the leaves dapple.
"Well, it means less blood, so I dunno." Techno shrugged, managing to keep the voices at bay with so many people around.
"Oh, so you like blood, huh?" Sapnap teased.
Techno grinned viciously. "Especially if it's not my own."
"Pffff." Sapnap scoffed, smiling. "So, are you going to go back to the mountains with False?" He asked after a long moment of silence, narrowing his eyes to look up at Techno.
Through his upside-down vision, Techno shrugged. "I'm not sure yet." A pause. "What about you? Where are you going to go, Snapchat?"
A smile appeared on Sapnap's face as he remembered who had last called him that. "Oh, I met some nice people in the jungle, and I might go live with them."
"Ooo, some 'nice people'?" Techno said. "Gonna go live with strangers, huh?"
"They're nice!" Sapnap protested.
Techno clicked his tongue. "You never know, man, they might go berserk on you."
Sapnap laughed, thinking of Karl and Quackity. "I think I'll be fine."
Techno grunted, and said no more, but when Sapnap glanced at him, there was a faint smile on his face as he watched Wilbur chase Tommy around.
~~~
All was well with the world.
Ranboo planted the purple allium in front of Grian's mansion, smiling at how the flower complemented the shades of blue in the mansion. With a soft noise, he teleported away, into Mumbo's base, almost trampling Tubbo. The two smiled at each other before Mumbo appeared, asking if they wanted any biscuits. "I've got plenty!"
"Hey, Sapnap!" Karl waved at Sapnap as he came into view of the treehouse with his stuff in tow, ready to move in. Quackity, in duck form, quacked at him from the pond.
Sapnap laughed and wished, for the umpteeth time, that he had the power of fire. "Hey Karl, hey Quackity!" He called back.
Dream's sword clashed with Techno's, and they placed their strength into the weapon, seeking to push the other back. "One more round!" Dream demanded after Techno pushed him back, placing his mask on the floor before heading back to the training arena.
"That'll just mean that I'll win again!" Techno said, but smiled none-the-less as he raised his sword again.
"Boys!" False's voice called. "Lunch soon, with Grian and Phil!"
"Alright, Falsie!" Techno called back, side-stepping a blow from Dream.
Wilbur squinted at Grian's figure as he flew through the air, his feathers reflecting rainbow. Phil flew parallel to him, creating a circle as they spiraled around each other. His dark feathers contrasted to Grian's, a reminder of his once death, but Wilbur smiled. He was alive now, and that was all that mattered.
Tommy weaved a dandelion crown beside Wilbur, his fingers tying the stems together to make an elaborate crown. Plucking a purple flower from the ground beside him, Tommy placed the flower into the center of the crown, reminding himself to plant more of the beauties later. He held up the crown to Wilbur's face, smiling at how peaceful his brother looked, all dark eyebags gone. "Grian! Phil!" He screamed, tossing the flower crown as high as he could.
Grian swooped down, catching the crown perfectly in his hand. "Thanks, Tommy!" He replied before rising in the air again, leveling himself with Phil and showing him the crown.
"What's this?"
"Tommy's present. For you." Grian said, placing the crown on top of Phil's golden hair.
Phil smiled. "It's for the both of us." He corrected Grian, taking out a dandelion and resting it in Grian's waffle, making the dandelion look like it belonged. "I shall name you, the dandelion prince." Phil joked, bowing in the air.
"Then you shall be king." Grian replied, curtsying with a giggle. "Place thy crown above thy head, dandelion king."
Phil wheezed, turning a 180 in the air. "You're funny, mate, did you know that?"
"Nope, not at all." Grian said, laughing. Phil laughed, the first good laugh he had laughed in a while. The two avians stared at each other, chuckling together, flying together.
River smiled as she watched the Dreamcraft members. I'm glad that Phil's back. She thought, feeling happy through the people's happiness. "I'm happy for you guys." She whispered under her breath.
"River! Where are you?!" A voice called outside her room. River opened her door, curious, and was pulled into the living room by Derivakat and SAD-ist.
"Wh-what?" River stuttered, surprised.
"We're playing Uno, come on!" Ely exclaimed, dealing cards as Ada forced her sister to sit down.
"You should stop locking yourself up in your room, it's unhealthy." SAD-ist said unapprovingly, smiling at her friend.
"Yeah, you should spend more time socialising!" Ada said. "Or you'll have no experience in social interaction."
"Don't be a spoilsport now." Derivakat wagged her finger at River. "Uno's more fun with more people."
River took her cards, her surprise turning into warmth and affection for her friend. I think I'm forgetting someone... But she shook the thought away as Ely reversed the direction, making it her turn again.
George was sleeping.
All was well with the world.
