Chapter 21

"Of course Josie wants Andrea," Lizzie muttered to herself, pacing back and forth through the abandoned mill. "She's pretty and funny and perfect, and everyone always goes for Josie first. And where is Lizzie, you ask? Oh, she has no one. But that's fine. She and her dad can grow old watching TV together." Lizzie sighed. "That's worse than dying alone with twenty cats. Much, much worse." She jumped when she saw the woman standing in the doorway. "Sorry - I didn't think anyone was here."

Emma just smiled. "Didn't mean to scare you. I was just exploring campus."

"Well -" Lizzie smiled and entered tourguide mode. "- you've found the Old Mill. It's the only mill, really, so I don't know why we call it the Old Mill. Students mostly come out here to drink and party."

Emma nodded, taking in the crumbling building. "Ah. The more you know."

Lizzie pressed her lips together, eyeing the crystal glowing in Emma's hand at her side. "What's that?" she asked curiously.

Emma laughed and held it up. "You caught me. It's a magical device that lets you conjure up part of your subconscious in the form of another person."

Lizzie furrowed her eyebrows. "What's it for?"

"Helping you make decisions. It's a tool I use a lot in my session ... if you want to try it?"

"Really?" Lizzie's eyebrows rose and her eyes sparkled.

"I have a couple." Emma held the crystal out as an offering. "You can borrow this one if you'd like."

"Oh my god." Lizzie took the crystal, admiring the way the sunlight hit it. "Thank you."

Emma nodded. "I'll see you on Monday, Elizabeth."
