Chapter 32: Confrontation
Melvin's Pov:
"You seem to be in a good mood today. What's the occasion?" I asked as I stared at George who was smiling uncontrollably. "Oh, many things happened, Mel!" He exclaimed, suddenly. "Well, would you mind listing them? I am extremely curious." I asked, smiling. This was the first time in forever that I found George smiling. It wasn't a fake smile nor, an angry or sad expression. But, a genuine smile that I would love to see every day of my life. "Oh, I'm staying with Heidi for a bit and she's taking me to meet Krupp later today," George explained, calmly. My eyes widen at that statement. "Oh, I've been wanting to go visit him since we suggested that Krupp might have an idea who that boy was." He continued to explain. "Wait, you are going to visit Mr.Krupp after 7 years? You're visiting him today?" I questioned, trying to let my mind process this information. "Well yes, I know I promised to let go of Harold but, if there is a small chance knowing who that boy is maybe we can have our normal friendship back." He explained, sighing slightly. "I see, well, alright then. But, why are you staying with Heidi again?" I asked, remembering what he said first. "Well, Harold and I had a huge fight over our pasts. I was so pissed at him that I called his sister and asked to stay over. She said yes and I lied about where I was going. We talked for a while and she promised to take me to see Krupp." He explained, looking down. "Your pasts? You both aren't still over that whole thing that happened in middle school? The whole personality and friends change?" I asked, concerned. These two may be completely different but, I could tell they had the same problem.
"Yes, how could you tell?" He asked. "George, it's so easy to tell. You're like an open book. Ready for me to flip the next page of your life." I replied, sighing. He slowly nodded and I looked away to notice the cafeteria doors. I could see Harold standing against the lockers and looking both ways as if he was waiting for someone. "Ah, George, I need to go. I just remembered that I need to help out one of the teachers!" I lied, getting up from my seat. "Still the teacher's pet, I see. Well, it's okay! See you later at lunch." George spoke, waving goodbye.
I waved goodbye as I left to go to see what Harold was up to. "Hello there, Hutchins," I spoke, crossing my arms. "Hey, nerd. What are you doing here? Are you trying to ruin my reputation or something?" Harold asked, chuckling. "As if I would waste my time doing that. I'm just curious about what you're doing here." I replied, rolling my eyes slightly. He looked away for a second until he returned to meet my gaze. "Don't tell me. You're waiting for George, aren't you?" I questioned, glaring at him.
"What? What gave you that idea? I was just waiting for Billy! Actually, I don't need to explain myself to you!" He yelled, stuttering over his words. "Yet, here we are, liar. I know you're waiting for George, you must feel guilty about last night." I spoke, keeping my glare on him. "He told you, didn't he?" He asked, groaning slightly. "Of course, I'm his best friend and he confides to me about his problems. Something you wish you could do once again." I explained, a small smirk showing. "The nerve of that guy," Harold mumbled, angrily.
"Look, I don't know what you're talking about! George must have just lied to you." He spoke, panic in his tone. "George never lies to me about such matters. But, you two have been lying to yourselves. What's up with you two? Why are you so mysterious and broken?" I questioned, concerned. "Ugh, why does this matter to you? You should mind your own business!" He asked, clearly annoyed with me. "If it includes George, it's my business because I worry and care about him unlike you," I replied, equally as annoyed. "Oh shut up, you little tattletale. You're just feeling sorry for yourself." Harold replied, pushing me away from him.
I accidentally bumped into someone as he pushed me. I apologized quickly and looked at him with a glare. "What are you talking about?" I asked, hands on my hips. "You heard me! You're feeling sorry for yourself. You felt bad about how we all acted toward one another in middle school! You felt bad that I left George all alone so, you decided to befriend him!" He yelled at me. "Even I did feel sorry, I wouldn't feel bad now about you! Besides, why did you leave George all alone?" I asked, angrily.
"He just wasn't my type and he would clearly get in my way of finding my future husband!" Harold explained. I looked at him annoyed as I heard his statement. "Then, why did he move out? Why do you still agree to live with him? Why do you still care about him?" I asked, walking closer to him. "So, you aren't smart after all. I'm just trying to get him out of my way and I've been doing a good job at it. Also, thanks for helping me." Harold responded, teasingly.
"Excuse me? Helping you?" I questioned, forming my hands into fists. "Now that you've asked him out, I could focus on my future husband. So, I must thank you for getting that brat-" I stopped him mid-sentence with a punch in his face. I could hear him hit the ground hard as I panted. Harold slowly sat up and gently touched the left part of his face where I punched him. "No..." I mumbled, shaking my head. I noticed the stares around us and I knew I had to get out of here before I got in trouble.
"I'm not letting you near George, you asshole!" I yelled before running off.
