Chapter 14: It's Better Than Nothing
George's Pov:
The day ended rather quickly which is weird but, whatever. I shut my locker door as I put on my jacket and slipped on my backpack. I grabbed my phone from my jacket's pocket and went straight to the internet. I clicked the search bar and typed in 'furniture stores near me'. I scrolled through the results and mapped out each store once I was done with that, I put my phone away. I rushed to the exit of the school not bothering to wait for Melvin. I suppose I have to apologize for ignoring him the whole day and he does deserve an explanation as to why I busted into his classroom. As I thought about it more, I could feel my face turn warmer with embarrassment. I ran to the first store and looked around to find the picture frames aisle. I had a clear picture of the frame, it was a rectangular brown frame with green vines surrounding the glass. I ran down the aisle looking both ways to see if there was even a glimpse of the frame. Nothing. I made my way out the door and rushed to the next store which was huge. "Excuse me! Where is the aisle for picture frames?" I asked an employee at the cash register. "Sorry, sir. We sold out on the ones we had." The employee responded. I nodded slowly and made my way out of the store. I sighed and recollected myself as I rushed to the third store. As soon as I entered the fairly sized store, I went to the nearest employee. "Excuse me-" I was stopped as I noticed who it was. "Edith?" I exclaimed and she smiled. "George Beard, right? It has been a while, how are you?" She replied, patting my head. "I'm fine, I didn't expect to see you here. How's Krupp?" I asked?
"The grumpy man has been doing fine so, what do you need?" She replied, moving her black hair out of the way. "Right, I was looking for picture frames. A rectangular brown one." I replied, hoping they would have it. "Well in your luck, we have the one, you're looking for. Come." She responded as she started walking. I followed her and started to calm down from my panicked state. Edith was a really nice person and she was always kind to most students. When I was still in middle school, she used to have a big crush on Krupp.
Harold and I helped them get together...I really miss the old days. "Here you go!" She spoke as she handed me a frame. It was the exact one I was looking for! "Thank you so much, Edith!" I exclaimed as I hugged the frame close to me. "No problem. Hey, I wanna give you my phone number." She stated as she followed me to the register. "So suddenly?" I questioned, surprised at the sentence. "Well, it's kinda weird but, I do wanna catch up with you. Especially after the whole confession thing." Edith explained and I looked down.
Edith was there when the whole thing happened, she always tried to comfort me since she knew Harold never hung me ever again. Krupp was also on the case as he then started monitoring Harold's behavior. I was startled by their reaction but, I remembered them saying, Harold's reaction to my confession was strange. "Well, okay. Go ahead." I spoke as I gave her my phone. We made it to the cash register and placed the frame down. As I did the whole transition to pay, Edith carefully typed in her contact.
After everything was settled, she gave me my phone and I headed for the door. She waved and I waved back as I went outside. I took a deep breathe as I began running back to the dorm. I wasn't sure what time Harold would be back but, I had to take all the time I had to fix everything. I stopped running as soon as I could see the dorm and then it hit me. Harold would probably wonder why there is tape on the letter and why the frame looks slightly different. The frame was newer and had a better color to it while the old one was fading in color and had chips and cracks. The letter itself was visible so, he would clearly see the tape. I can't really hide the evidence so, it's best that he knows what happened. I really don't want him to question me once he notices. I looked at the bag in my hand and nodded as I entered the dorm and signed in. I walked all the way to my room number and used the key to unlock the door. I place the bag underneath a pillow on the couch and jumped into my bed.
I should probably learn how to cook if I need to wait every day for Harold to return.
