" Oh keeper of this wild and hidden place, we anoint ourselves with blood and earth. " Jackie spoke in a low voice as she dragged her finger across Shauna's forehead, leaving a dark 'x' made of dirt and deer blood from their last catch.
In the attic that night, the girls and Travis sat in a big circle, with Shauna standing near the edge, a black tie wrapped around her head to hide her vision. Jackie had declared her the 'vessel' for their journey to the other side, using the hunting knife to use as her answering pendant. When Theo and Lottie had returned to the cabin and heard the pitch of a seance, neither seemed all that excited or enthused; for Lottie, it was definitely more of an uneasy suspicion than anything, but Theo just didn't think that much of it. To be honest, had it not been literally everyone minus Taissa, Laura Lee, Sam, Javi, and Coach Scott upstairs, she likely wouldn't have participated either.
As Jackie handed off the bowl's mixture to Travis after marking herself, Tara stared out the small window in the attic while she waited for the bowl to make its way to her. She couldn't see much because of its height, but she could see a few stars sprinkled across the dark night sky. She felt that feeling again, but this time chose to brush it off and ignore it instead of wipe at something that wasn't even on her skin.
Theo sat leaned back, her hands pressed into the dusty wooden floor as her nail absentmindedly picked at the engravings circling one of the candles Jackie and Shauna had lit and set up around the circle. She could feel Lottie side-eyeing her, so when she glanced over and just as quickly averted her eyes downward, Theo saw how close their hands were, as Lottie had hers sitting beside her knee. The pale girl tried not to stare at her hand, but was deep in consideration, debating internally if she should inch her hand over to Lottie's or just exist how they were with the little space there was between them. Their knees would've been touching if Theo was a few inches taller and longer, but that didn't mean she was any less tempted to sit her pinky over Lottie's.
" Prince, pay attention, " Mari's voice interrupted Theo's thoughts, and it actually surprised her so much that she drew her hand away from Lottie's entirely to take the bowl from the other girl. Mari followed her face with a skeptical look, but once Theo had drawn an 'x' on her forehead, she let it go and turned to whisper something to Akilah.
Eventually, everyone had drew a bloody x across their skin, and Jackie sat down with her legs crossed under her and a satisfied smile on her face. She inhaled deeply and closed her eyes, lifting her hands into the air, which Misty copied with an expression as if she was watching Jackie move mountains or cure a disease. Alex held back a scoff.
" Oh spirit, we offer our sister as your instrument. Come to us, and speak your peace. " Jackie called upon whatever 'spirit' was listening to their nonsense as a few of the other girls also raised their hands, while others just continued to look between Jackie and Shauna, waiting for something to happen.
" It is I, Jacques. " Shauna spoke rather flatly, causing the girls to chuckle quietly; their reactions made the brunette clear her throat and try again, in a much deeper, 'manlier' voice, " Jacques. "
Jackie lowered her hands after that sent another chorus of laughter through the group, very visibly annoyed by the lack of seriousness. It took everything in Alex not to just lean over and tell her to relax, it wasn't like they were actually trying to contact the dead with some life altering questions.
" Ask your questions. The pendulum will answer them. "
" Okay, " Van cleared her throat, leaning forward to press her hands against her knees before she closed her eyes and raised her hands, " dear Dead Hunter Guy...did OJ do it? "
Again, the girls chuckled softly, and Jackie's eyes flickered fleetingly from Van to Shauna, who raised her blindfold to look at the team captain. Jackie plastered a smile on her face as she looked around the group to insist, " Come on, guys, real questions. "
" The veil is thin between our two planes. Ask what is in your heart. " Shauna was almost too good at being a vessel for spirits, at least in Dana's mind. She wondered how often Jackie had her be the designated 'offering' for their seances as kids that they had mentioned before.
" I'll go, " Mari offered, closing her eyes with a small grin as she asked, " is Principal Berzonsky screwing Ms. DeWine? "
They laughed at the question, then watched in anticipation as Shauna began to subtly move the pendulum. Their eyes were glued to the knife as it began to swing in a circle. Before Shauna even claimed what it meant, the girls began hooting and hollering, " It is certain. "
" Hunter guy, if we hadn't crashed, would we have won Nationals? " Akilah asked with so much enthusiasm that Theo was honestly surprised to see Shauna's answer.
The brunette pressed her lips together in a skeptical expression, then let the knife swing back and forth in a straight line. Some of them 'awwed' while others denied even the idea of them losing.
" That's bullshit, Shipman, " Alex called, throwing her hand out dismissively even if Shauna couldn't see it, " Hunter guy doesn't know shit, we would've smoked their asses. "
A few of the girls exclaimed in agreement while others continued to boo Shauna's response, starting a small course of discussion amongst them that detoured their game for a moment.
Downstairs, those that didn't wish to play or were otherwise told not to sat in silence other than the sound of Laura Lee flipping pages in her flight manual or the scraping of Taissa sharpening a knife. Sam had stayed down there because she assumed most, if not all, of the group would be distracted and away from her long enough for her to grab Shauna's journal this time. Unfortunately, she didn't account for Taissa Turner of all people not participating. Honestly, she didn't think Coach Scott would care enough or pay attention to what she was doing, and Javi would likely be too shy to say anything to her about it. Laura Lee would, at the most, lecture her, but she was so absorbed in the manual that she hadn't even blinked in the last minute.
But if Taissa knew she was stealing Shauna's journal? Sam could only imagine. So she had to wait until she was either distracted well enough or left and wouldn't be able to notice. Easier said than done.
Because of the silence, they could hear the laughter and shouting from upstairs through the ceiling above them, and while it wasn't the most annoying sound, it was starting to get on their nerves. Taissa stopped scraping her knife after her eyes drifted to Laura Lee, raising a brow as she said, " If you're thinking about flying that thing, you're even crazier than those idiots upstairs. "
" My grandpa used to fly a Cessna and he could barely write his name. " Laura Lee stated matter-of-factly as she met Taissa's gaze with a simple shrug, " It can't be that hard. "
Taissa continued to look at her as though she was trying to decide if she needed to take the manual away from her before she went and hopped in the plane that night. Sam wanted to point out the amount of plane flight that ended with malfunction, injury, or bluntly, death, but she just kept it to herself for some reason. She didn't really care enough about their conversation to engage.
" Okay, fine, " Laura Lee gave in just from Taissa's look, " it's probably hard, but there's no harm in reading about it. "
" Coach, are you listening to this? " Taissa asked, turning her attention to the man that sat in a chair closer to the middle of the cabin. He hadn't been feeling well for the past hour or so and hadn't really moved that much either, but had insisted he was alright.
After a long silence and squeezing his eyes closed, sweat coating his forehead in the glow of the fireplace, Coach Scott simply said, " No. "
Taissa rolled her eyes, but dropped it with that. As another round of laughter came from upstairs, Javi rose from his seat with an almost annoyed look, " I'm gonna go see what's so funny. "
Neither Coach Scott or any of the three girls said anything to argue with him as he climbed up the ladder into the attic without another word.
" They're obviously fake, " Natalie insisted as she shifted over a little to accommodate for Javi's sudden appearance as the boy sat between the blonde and his brother, " you really need a ghost to tell you that? "
" You think? " Mari questioned as the girls all chuckled, and Travis scolded Javi for joining them. The dark haired girl shook her head, " But who would've paid for them? Her parents? "
" I think they got divorced recently. " Van interjected, " It could've been guilt money. "
" Well, that's just creepy, " Mari insisted, leaning forward with an amused expression.
" 'Well, honey, your mom and I are splitting up, but don't worry— " Van lowered her voice to imitate, then cupped her own chest comically, " —cause your tits are gonna look amazing'. "
Theo rolled her eyes despite being part of the laughter at the stupid joke, and saw Taissa coming into the attic. She figured she must've gotten bored with Sam, Laura Lee, and Coach Scott downstairs and decided to join.
" Okay, guys, guys, focus, " Jackie called to bring them back, " next question. Misty? "
Alex was the one to roll her eyes then, watching Misty's hand go up in the air enthusiastically. The tan girl leaned back, pressing her hands into the floorboards as she imagined thirty different, yet equally as weird questions she could've been thinking about.
The blonde cleared her throat and squirmed around nervously for a moment before closing her eyes, " Dear spirit, I need to know the truth: does the person I like like me back? "
" Aww, " Jackie softly cooed, while Theo and Alex met eyes across the circle. The latter made an expression that made Theo have to cover her mouth with her fist to not look like an asshole and laugh at Misty's obvious intention.
" Oh, okay, " Van called as the blade swung in a circle, gaining a few whistles, teasing 'oohs' and laughter.
" My turn. " Dana insisted shortly after, shifting on her legs so she was sitting on her calves. She stared at the blindfolded Shauna with a very serious look, but the way she furrowed her brows made it look anything but. " Is Tommy staying loyal back in New Jersey? "
" Ohhh, shit, " Alex said, looking to the pendulum instantly, throwing her arms around her knees.
Shauna tilted her head to the side with a small half-grin taking over her lips before she started to subtly make the pendulum swing straight. Though, she lifted her other hand to stop their reactions, and, soon after, the pendulum moved in a circle once again.
" Damn right, he better be, " Dana jokingly said as the others laughed and called Shauna's name playfully.
" Okay, next question? "
Javi raised his hand slowly, eyes flickering over to Jackie, who gave him a nod and an encouraging "mmhmm" in response.
" Are we all gonna die out here? " Without missing a beat, the words fell from his mouth, and just as quickly the girls' smiles began to drop, one by one.
Travis nudged Javi with a 'what the hell?' kind of face, but the younger brother barely acknowledged it as the group all looked to the pendulum again. The atmosphere seemed to flip so quickly, as if the words themselves had made their blood start to run cold. At first, the pendulum didn't move, but it slowly began to sway, until it started moving in a loop.
" Okay, an eight? " Van scoffed, " What's that supposed to mean? "
" That's not funny, Shauna, " Tara insisted, stormy eyes glued to the brunette holding said pendulum.
Theo suddenly sat a little straighter, feeling a weird sort of weight resting on her chest. She rolled her shoulders back and turned her head towards Lottie, who was now staring out the attic window. The pale girl opened her mouth to get her attention for some reason, as the others bickered.
" It's not an eight, it's an infinity, " Mari correctly quietly, and Van rolled her eyes.
" Yeah, okay, Aristotle— "
" Lottie? "
Before Theo could even fully say her name, Lottie let out a long, spine chilling scream, and suddenly the window flung open, hitting against the inside of the cabin wall, sending everyone in the room scrambling backwards with eyes wide. The flames of the candles blew out at the same time, leaving them in pitch blackness save for the moonlight shining in ominously from the now-open window.
Lottie kept screaming, and it felt like it was right in Theo's ears, so loud to the point where the shorter girl clamped her hands over her ears, trying to at least muffle the sound but everytime she inhaled to scream again, it felt like nails dragging down a chalkboard. Van, Alex, Akilah, and Shauna all knelt around Lottie, trying to snap her out of whatever the hell was happening, while the others either sat still in fear or tried to find a way to relight the candles.
" Who has the matches? " Jackie shouted as Misty shut the window back, closing off the chilly air from blowing in anymore, and while Lottie had stopped screaming, she started hyperventilating instead. She heaved in and out big breaths, sounding like her chest was about to explode and like she had just witnessed a murder.
" Guys, something's really wrong with her. " Van insisted as she turned to look at the others as Lottie keeled over, unresponsive to the girls around her trying to calm her down.
" Obvious-fucking-ly, " Tara snapped quickly, but her eyes were unmoved from Lottie, sitting rigid beside Dana. She had bolted to her feet as soon as the window flung open, but knelt back down to hold the injured girl's shoulders as Natalie, Travis, and Taissa hovered nears them.
" I-I don't think she's— " Akilah tried to splutter something out over the girl's loud wailing, but Lottie interrupted her.
" It wants..it wants.. " She kept repeating herself in a strained voice as though something was squeezing the words out of her.
" What the fuck is happening? " Dana asked in disbelief as Van turned to Misty.
" Misty, what do we do? "
" What the motherfuck does Misty know? This isn't fucking medical, Van, she's—she's, shit, I don't know— " Alex jabbed in a panicked voice as Lottie continued to repeat herself, over and over.
" Lottie, I swear to God, if you're fucking with us— " Mari's voice shook with fear, and it might've been the first time Theo had heard such a falter in the girl's words.
" I think she's like, possessed, or something, " Akilah finally said, and Alex shot her head up to look at Theo. When the shorter girl realized she was looking at her for a reason, Theo stared back at her, shell shocked.
"..What? What—what, you want me to fix this? How? " Theo stammered, eyes flickering from Alex's pointed expression and Lottie, a lost look on her face.
" I don't know, try to calm her down somehow, " Alex insisted, to which Theo sharply scoffed.
" Oh, because that's working out great for you guys. "
" Just try, Prince! "
Theo dragged her hands down the sides of her face as the others continued to shout at each other and freak out, making the room feel hot and unbearably loud. She didn't know what the hell to do, and honestly she didn't want to go near Lottie acting like that, but she had to stop being a scaredy cat and do it anyways. They were all scared and confused, but they had survived a fucking plane crash, a stupid seance shouldn't be anything.
" Lottie..Lottie, just slow down, " Theo started, slowly reaching out to her and she moved to the small group. Akilah shifted to let her get closer, but just as Theo laid her hand on Lottie's shoulder, her fingers seemed to latch on with a death grip. Lottie stopped, and within the next second, her other hand was wrapped around Theo's wrist.
It was freezing again. She could feel the uncomfortable warmth of the attic still on her skin, but she knew it was cold. The cabin was gone, it was bright white, all around her. The sky, she thought it was the sky at least, was such a pale blue that it nearly blended in with the white snow on the trees that surrounded her.
Freezing, freezing, god, why was it so cold?
Then the feeling of squeezing, something holding her throat, her lungs, holding the very oxygen in them. Like it was telling her she didn't have enough time to be confused and curious. It was like the other morning when she had woken up from that weird dream, but this one wasn't fast flashes or nonstop images she couldn't see, much less understand.
She could see, she was standing, but it felt..strange. The sun was bright above her, but it and the clouds looked almost smeared, blurry, unfocused. Theo also realized that she wasn't standing, she was floating, or something of the sort. When she looked down at her hands, everything felt so heavy, even when she turned her hand around, it was so slow. The sky above was blurry, and moving slow, like her hands.
She wasn't standing, she was submerged, in water. The blurry sky was above the surface of the water. It was so cold, and so quiet.
So quiet. Not really a peaceful or uneasy quiet. Just quiet.
Then Lottie was screaming again. It wants, it wants, it wants. Hot needles pricked Theo's wrist and she yanked her hand out of Lottie's grip and fell backwards on her ass as she held her arm to her chest.
" Lottie, sweetie, listen, what is 'it'? "
" More like what does it want? "
" Hey, are you okay? " Jackie asked as she knelt beside Theo, pulling at her arm. The dark haired girl was slow to look up at the team captain, but once she did, she let go of her own wrist but said nothing. Jackie's eyes dropped to her pale arm, and saw the reddened marks from Lottie's tight grip, " Shit, Theo, "
" Hungry. " Lottie murmured, then, with her teeth bared in a way that made Alex back away from her, she began to laugh. It wasn't anything like the sort of laughter that had been happening only minutes prior; not joyous or humorous, this was unsettling. Lottie rolled her head to Shauna and grabbed her hand, shushing her, " It's in you already. "
Shauna smacked Lottie's hand away and also moved back from her, brows lowered and a fearful glint in her eyes.
" Lottie, knock it off. " Taissa snapped, walking closer to her with an aggravated expression, " This isn't a game. "
" I don't think she's faking, Tai, " Alex insisted, finally rising to her feet as she stood next to Taissa, who opened her mouth to respond, but Lottie turned to face forward; indirectly, at the two of them. Taissa froze, but whether to say it was in fear or not was too uncertain for Alex, though it did scare her. She had never seen Taissa stopped in her tracks like that, and she certainly never felt the need to grab her hand.
" Il veut toujours du sang. Il veut toujours du sang. " Lottie's voice altered then, it got deeper and almost had an echo to it that wasn't there before. Theo would've thought she was going batshit if it weren't for the surprised expressions of the others to tell her she wasn't the only one that heard it. She stared forward with a cold smile, repeating, " Il veut toujours du sang. "
" Is that French? " Van questioned in disbelief, turning to look at the others.
" Jesus, since when does Lottie speak French? " Natalie added, sparking a memory in Shauna, who quickly sat up.
" Jackie, wasn't she in your class? "
" Yeah, but she sucks at French, " Jackie insisted, shaking her head as the echoes of Lottie's words grew louder.
" Il voulait du sang. Il voulait du sang. "
" W-well what's she saying?! " Mari exclaimed, but Jackie just shook her head again frantically, shaking Theo in the process as she still held onto her shoulder.
" I don't know, I suck at French too! "
" Well, damn it, Jackie, try not to! " Van yelled back, but Taissa turned her head to Theo instead.
" Don't you take French too? " She asked, and somehow, Theo felt like Taissa had just handed her a death warrant.
" I...yeah, I do. " Theo admitted, albeit nervously, still shaken from whatever had happened when Lottie touched her, " But I don't— "
" She's one of the best in our class, she can decipher it, " And maybe it would've sounded encouraging, in any other circumstance. Here though, it just made her want to strangle Jackie.
" Il veut plus de sang. Il veut plus de sang. " Lottie's eyes were watering now, darting around everywhere but not actually looking at any of them as she swayed back and forth, " Il veut plus de sang. "
" Theo? " Shauna called hopefully, looking up at her as the shorter girl tried to concentrate on what Lottie was saying. She blinked hard and shook her head before staring at Lottie, watching her mouth as she tried to pick up on the words.
" I'm trying—I'm— " She dug her nails into the skin of her palms, desperately pushing the rest of their voices out of her head, " Il veut..Il voulait? Il veut plus..de sang. Sang. "
" That's..that's 'blood', isn't it? Sang? " Jackie asked as Theo held up her hand to keep them quiet.
" It's..it's different, she's changing parts every other time, but..yeah, " Theo slowly confirmed, feeling her chest tighten, " 'It wants blood, it always wants blood, it..wanted more blood'. "
As if as soon as realization hit Lottie that Theo deciphered what she was saying, she stopped speaking and her head snapped over to her; a dead glare stared back at her. Abruptly, both girls stood at the same time, Theo nearly tripping over Jackie as she felt her heart threatening to burst from her body. No one else moved, glued to their spots as Theo slowly reached her hand out towards Lottie.
" Theo, wait— " Alex tried to warn her, but before Theo could even consider it, Lottie grabbed her first.
It felt like Lottie had grown half a foot taller than Theo, or maybe Theo had shrunk when she scrambled backwards as quick as she could but Lottie held the collar of her shirt so tightly her knuckles were turning white. Lottie walked Theo into the wall, loose dust falling onto her shoulders as her back pressed into the uneven wood and Lottie's forearm sat against her neck. Theo heard the others shout at Lottie, but none of them got close enough to pull her off, at least if they did, they didn't succeed, because all Theo could see was Lottie's face above hers.
She would've never described Lottie's smile to be menacing, or her eyes as scary, but Theo felt as if she would've been stuck to the wall even if she wasn't being held there because of how terrifying it felt to stare at her face right then.
" Lottie— " Theo barely managed to exhale her name before she was cut off.
" Ta mère aurait honte de toi. " Her voice was sharp but quiet, harsh but could've sounded like a soft whisper. Her eyes darted over Theo's face to watch her reaction, as if trying to see how much she actually understood. Whatever she saw must've been funny; Lottie laughed that unnatural, dark laugh again, then leaned closer until their faces were so close that their cheeks could touch.
Theo resisted the urge to close her eyes when she felt Lottie's nose just barely touch her face, forcing herself to look at her from the corners of her eyes. She was, somehow, almost surprised to find her staring back at her. For a second, she wondered if Lottie could feel her hands shaking at her sides.
Lottie's lips grazed Theo's ear as she murmured eerily again, " Je veux te manger. "
Theo gasped as soon as Lottie was pulled away from her, like she hadn't been breathing. The girls were all yelling, voices blending in with each other as Taissa crouched in front of Theo; she hadn't even realized she knelt down, blinking the confusion quickly away as she nodded to whatever Taissa was saying, unable to hear her.
" Le sang coule ici. " Lottie had broken away from them, standing in front of the window now with her hands raised and her back to the rest of them, " Ici, ici, il faut... "
" Shit, more blood stuff? I don't know! " Jackie insisted as she tried to translate, pointing at Lottie, " Here! Here, she's saying 'here'! "
" There's blood where, Lottie? " Van asked, and Taissa looked up from Theo with a small scowl.
" You really have to be encouraging her, Van? "
The redhead just turned with her finger raised to stop Taissa before she asked again, " Blood here or out there? "
Downstairs, Sam had taken advantage of Coach Scott and Laura Lee's carelessness to what she was doing and had gone to the drawer moments prior to the chaos ensuing upstairs. She had indeed found Shauna's journal right where she'd left it, but she had barely gotten to sit back down and open it when they started hearing the screaming and banging around.
" Coach, do something! Make them stop! " Laura Lee pleaded, standing and shouting at the man desperately, who honestly looked like he was going to pass out at any given moment. " Coach? "
Sam leaned forward out of her chair, brows knitted together in confusion as she also watched Coach Scott turn to look at Laura Lee with an indescribable expression.
"..Coach? "
He threw up as if on cue, spewing his dinner all over the floor in front of him, making Laura Lee cringed and step backwards. Sam made a face as well, then stood when Laura Lee ultimately started climbing up the ladder after grabbing her Bible. Sam felt as though she really had no choice but to follow her, tucking Shauna's journal into her sweatshirt.
" You must spill blood. " Lottie finally spoke in English as she splayed her palms against the window, and her voice was back to normal; as normal as it could be, though it was still shaken and rattling, " Or else. "
" Or else what, Lottie? " Jackie asked, fear easily recognizable on her face.
No one dared speak as they waited for her response, listening to Lottie's heavy panting as she continued to stare at the window. Van inched towards her with a hand stretched out, but just before she could reach her, Lottie slammed her head into the glass with a loud crack.
The girls screamed, and Alex moved fast to be able to keep Lottie from falling backwards, but she recovered relatively fast and turned around. They all stared at her in horror as blood seeped down from her split forehead, trailing down her nose, and she began to scream again; though this wasn't much of a scream, not like the ones before, but a wail of agony, as if she was feeling the pain of a thousand men.
" What is happening?! " Mari cried as the girls crouched around Lottie again once she fell to her knees, trying to calm or comfort her in any way possible as her piercing weeping began to tremble her body.
Tara held onto Dana, her arm wrapped around the girl's chest as Natalie and Travis stood just behind them, the latter holding Javi close to himself. At the other end of the attic, Taissa kept Theo behind her despite the other girl feeling as though she should help them try to calm Lottie again. Hearing her screaming like that scared her, but it also terrified her in a different way.
" The power of Christ compels you! " Suddenly, Laura Lee was standing in the middle of them all with Sam close behind her, holding her Bible out towards Lottie, blue eyes wide but bold as she continued to yell, " Begone, Satan! The power of Christ compels you! "
" For fuck's sake, Laura Lee— "
" Lottie! Lottie, stop! " The blonde cut Alex off, one last desperate plea before she chucked the book at the afflicted girl, who almost immediately stopped wailing.
" Ow, " Lottie muttered, looking down at the Bible before raising her head to Laura Lee. She brushed her hair from her face, smearing some of the blood that had began to run down the crevices of her nose, " what the hell, Laura Lee? "
Everyone stood, or sat, in silence for a few seconds, loudly breathing to regain their safety as it seemed as though it was over. Whatever 'it' was. Taissa released Theo, standing up as she stared over at Lottie skeptically.
" Seriously? " Mari looked as though she could've burst into tears right then, " What the motherfuck just happened? "
Theo's eyes had to move, they couldn't stay on Lottie because they made eye contact too quickly, she wasn't ready for it. Not with the blood on her face, and not after whatever the hell that was. Instead, they found Alex, who was already looking at her, concerned but also unable to walk over to her and check on her. Theo assumed Alex was looking for a nod of reassurance or something. Theo just stared back at her.
Alex's usual feline smirk and eyes of malicious concentration were nothing compared to Lottie just then. She had become something Theo didn't know how to describe in a matter of seconds; teeth bared and eyes of bloodlust. The bear in the woods must've seen something like that before it watched a wolf tear it's stomach open.
