"CAN YOU TIE UP MY HAIR?"
Glenn turns around when he hears the little voice, not even registering who it was until he was already looking at Bonnie. Her brown eyes were wide and expectant, and she held up a small black hair tie in his direction. "Uh, yeah. Of course."
He gently puts down the gun that he was cleaning, making sure that it was safely out of reach before he crouches down, taking the hair tie from Bonnie's extended hand.
Iris and Carl were outside on watch, peering through the holes that they had created through wooden pallets to keep them safe from any sudden bullets. Rick had made the decision that going outside properly wasn't safe, so Bonnie couldn't go and join Iris like she may have done before the attack, leaving her inside the safety of the prison walls.
Her hair was messy as if she had been tossing it around all day, and for the first time since knowing the little girl, Glenn notices how long it was. Based on how clean it looked, Glenn knew that Iris had been taking care of it, and he felt a rush of gratitude for her kindness. Looking at Bonnie now, it was like the wool had been lifted from his eyes, and he stopped seeing a threat in her, but for the young child she really was.
Their only threat was the Governor, and Glenn found himself thankful that Bonnie wasn't anywhere near him anymore.
Still, the fact that she had asked him of all people had taken Glenn off guard, but he had underestimated the innocence of a child because Bonnie didn't seem to realise that she was indirectly the cause of the biggest fight he and Iris had ever had, and she just smiles.
Glenn clears his throat and shakes out of it, coughing before he speaks. "Turn around, kiddo."
Bonnie does as he says, absentmindedly humming a little tune that he recognised from Iris. Glenn hadn't been around Bonnie much, but even he had noticed how much the little girl had come out of her shell since her first night at the prison. It was all credited to Iris being her sweet and nurturing self, and Glenn could see the results clearly laid out in front of him.
He couldn't believe he'd passed up on a chance to be a part of it.
Now that the ambush that he had been so focused on had actually happened, and he had missed part of it by trying to predict how it would happen, Glenn felt his tunnel vision start to clear. Especially after Iris had hugged him the way she did when she realised he was safe.
God, he misses her.
Glenn carefully picks up strands of Bonnie's hair and pulls it into a sweeping ponytail, being careful not to tug it too hard. He knew how to do a couple of simple hairstyles. He had grown up with sisters who forced him to play hairdressers the moment he knew how to walk and he had gotten used to helping Iris with her space buns because as brilliant as she was, there was only so much you could do without a mirror.
"Uh, is that okay?" Glenn asks once he wraps the hair tie around the ponytail a couple of times.
Bonnie turns around, and now Glenn was kneeling on the ground, her face was level with his. She grins, and Glenn notices that she's missing a couple of teeth from her gums. "Yeah, thanks, Glenn!"
As Glenn stands up, Bonnie turns back around and runs off again into one of the cells. It was a simple interaction, but as he watched her disappear, Glenn felt frozen in place. It felt like something had suddenly shifted in the atmosphere in a way that Glenn couldn't really describe ― Bonnie had gone to him for help over anyone else that was inside ― and it felt really good.
"Glenn." A hoarse voice gets his attention, and he walks around the corner to see Rick and some of the others gathered around. When he catches sight of him, Rick nods his head. "Iris is out on watch."
"Yeah, I know." Glenn replies, leaning against the wall beside Daryl.
Rick sighs, looking around with a heavy gaze. "Field's filled with walkers. I didn't see any snipers out there, but we'll keep Iris on watch."
"I'll get up in the guard tower, take out half them walkers, give these guys a chance to fix the fence." Daryl offers, standing up a little straighter.
"Or use some of the cars to put the bus in place." Michonne says, her arms crossed. Glenn looks over at the others and catches the somber expressions written all over their faces.
"We can't access the field without burning through our bullets." Hershel sighs, leaning heavily on his crutch.
"So we're trapped in here." Glenn says, moving forward until he was directly in Rick's line of sight. "There's barely any food or ammo."
"We could try and kill some through the fence, like we did when we first took the prison." Maggie suggests, tilting her head.
Daryl shrugs with nonchalance, as if everything rolled off of his back. "Been here before. We'll be alright."
"That's when it was just us." Glenn says. He still couldn't believe that Daryl had returned with Merle after all of the harsh words spoken when they left Woodbury. Daryl was family and they would've taken him back in no matter what, but he resented the fact that Merle had to be here with him. "Before there was a snake in the nest."
Daryl scoffs, rolling his eyes. "Man, we gonna go through this again? Look, Merle's staying here. He's with us now. Get used to it."
Glenn's face sours, and he is about to bite back even harder, but the tiny voice in the back of his mind reminds him that it was pointless.
However, Daryl can see straight through him. He backs up, shaking his head as he watches each one of them. "All y'all."
It was silent as Daryl stalks up the stairs to the second floor of cells.
As soon as his footsteps above come to a slow stop, Glenn steps closer to Rick. "Seriously, Rick, I don't think Merle living here is really gonna fly."
He knew that once things calmed down, Iris would have very strong words to say about the whole situation.
"I can't kick him out." Rick replies, his tone harsh as he grits his teeth together.
Glenn grunts in frustration, holding his arms out as he thinks through a million better options than the one Rick had chosen. He couldn't stand the thought of Merle living here: not just because of what Merle did to him, but because he didn't want Iris or Bonnie to have to see him every single day. It wasn't fair. "I wouldn't ask you to live with Shane after he tried to kill you."
Hershel holds out a hand before Rick can respond. "Merle has military experience. He may be erratic, but don't underestimate his loyalty to his brother. What if we solve both problems at once?"
Glenn shakes his head, looking up over his head to make sure Daryl wasn't listening. "Deliver Merle to the Governor. Bargaining chip. Give him his traitor, maybe declare a truce."
Rick sighs, massaging his temple. He didn't respond, but Glenn could tell that he was considering it at least a little bit. Glenn couldn't help but think that giving Merle to the Governor would make him feel better, though when it actually came down to it, he didn't know if he could just leave him there knowing what their enemies were capable of. Or if a truce was even feasible.
Before anyone could say anything further, the cell bar doors swing open to reveal Iris and Carl as they burst into the room. The two of them were disheilved and panting as if they had run all the way over here. Rick straightens up immediately, looking at Iris with fear and anticipation.
Iris swallows thickly. "Andrea is here."
𖤓𖤓𖤓
Iris clutches hold of her gun as she follows Rick out of the prison.
Her heart had dropped to her stomach the moment she spotted the familiar blonde woman stumbling through the walkers that infiltrated the field. It was the first thing that had happened on her watch shift that had otherwise been calm as she got her bearings back. The fight ― or the ambush, more accurately ― had caught Iris off guard in more ways than one. She had almost lost her life yet again for something that seemed so trivial, proving that people were so much more dangerous than walkers.
It hadn't come as a surprise that the second she heard the terrifying spray of bullets she had realised how much she missed having Glenn by her side. Only a couple hours had passed since their hug, and Iris could still feel the warmth of his skin under her fingertips. She could still hear the tenderness in his voice when he called her name, and it only made her heart beat faster and faster as she sat in resolute silence with Carl.
Until she had spotted Andrea on the field.
Her bright hair radiated through the dull muted colours of the dead. It was so clear that Iris knew exactly who she was from one single glance, weaving
her way so effortlessly around the walkers that there was a moment Iris was terrified by the idea that she was one herself. However, Andrea was walking with an intent that she wouldn't have been capable of had she been a walker.
No, Andrea was here for them.
Rick jumped into action the second that he heard the news, taking his gun from his holster and running outside so fast that the others had to scramble to follow him. Glenn took Carl and Carol to the bridge to get a better view, grabbing one of the rifles in case Andrea really was a walker and they didn't realise until she was already too close.
Iris couldn't help but remember when Andrea had done the same thing for them; accidentally shooting Daryl in the shoulder when he had returned from trying to find Sophia.
Merle ran towards the gate first, hiding behind one of the cars as he peers curiously at Andrea. Iris could feel the breaths on her lungs as she waited for him to call out. Andrea may have been with Woodbury all this time, but Iris still considered her a friend. She didn't want her to die.
"Clear!" Merle yells, and Rick starts forward, followed closely by Daryl, Iris, Maggie and Michonne.
Iris pauses when she realises how Andrea had managed to get through the crowd of walkers without being noticed. She had a walker on a snare pole, guiding her through the dead with ease. She stumbles to the edge of the fence until she reaches the gate, looking up at them with a pleading expression.
Iris couldn't believe her eyes.
It felt like Andrea had risen from the dead, and not in the normal way.
"Are you alone?" Rick asks, the moment that Andrea locks eyes with him.
"Open the gate." Andrea says, holding onto the fence.
"Are you alone?!" Rick repeats, his tone much more forceful.
"Rick!" Andrea replies. The walkers were slowly becoming aware of her presence, walking towards her with outstretched arms.
Rick grunts, throwing the set of keys in Daryl's direction. "Open it."
Daryl fumbles with the keys, swinging his crossbow on his back as he opens the gate just wide enough for Andrea to slip in. Andrea sighs in relief and drops the walker, her muscles relaxing as Daryl shuts the gate behind her, locking the walkers out of reach.
Then Rick came onto the scene.
"Hands up! Turn around." Rick commands, holding his arm out defensively. "Turn around now!"
Andrea's mouth drops open, looking baffled. She holds her hands up and takes a step forward, trying to mitigate Rick's obvious fears. Iris tilts her head, watching her movements carefully. She didn't look like she had been sent to hurt them, but experience told her that they had to be cautious.
Rick pushes Andrea against the fence aggressively, making her drop the snare pole that she was using. He pats her down, forcing her to her knees and speaking right in her ear with a sinister, almost wild edge to his voice. "All right. Get down, on the floor. I asked if you were alone."
"I am!" Andrea exclaims, but she doesn't attempt to fight Rick.
Rick stares at her for a moment longer, his blue eyes pouring into her as if he could see every single secret she had, searching for her vulnerabilities in order to decide whether or not she was trustworthy. He grabs the bag around her shoulder, chucking it on the ground and forcing her to stand. "Welcome back. Get up."
Andrea grunts but she puts one foot in front of the other as Rick guides her up the stairs of Cell Block C. From above, Iris can see Glenn, Carl and Carol running in from the bridge ready to greet Andrea. Naturally, everyone was curious to find out what the blonde girl had been up to in the eight months since leaving the farm ― especially since, as far as they knew, she was on the side of their new enemy.
Iris snaps out of her daze when Rick and Andrea disappear inside, shaking her head to stop her mind from wandering any further. She carefully steps over to the abandoned backpack, picking it up by the handle and rushing to follow the others inside.
Rick had let Andrea into the visitors room, and that was where she was standing when Iris walked into the room. She drops the bag on one of the tables and leans against the wall, sharing a glance with Glenn on the other side of the room.
Andrea was looking at each individual person with incredible interest, perking up more and more as she made eye contact with each of them, despite their grim expressions. Her face breaks out into a relieved smile when she gets to Carol, and without thinking, rushes forward to hug her.
Carol takes her happily into her arms, hugging Andrea tightly. After a moment, she lets go and sniffles. "After you saved me, we thought you were dead."
Andrea smiles kindly at her and just shakes her head, a silent expression of acceptance. She had tears in her eyes as she grips hold of Carol's arms, looking around the darkened room with a mixture of shock and relief. When she notices Hershel, her jaw drops once again, looking at his leg, or more accurately, his absence of one. "Hershel, my God."
Hershel didn't respond and Andrea didn't expect him to. She moves away from Carol and continues stumbling in a circle, greeting each person under her breath like she couldn't believe they were alive. Bonnie was sitting cross-legged on the ground beside her with her hair swept up, drawing absentmindedly in the dirt on the ground. Andrea does a double take.
"Is that John Bennett's little girl?" She asks, peering at Bonnie with a curiosity that made Iris want to step between them and protect Bonnie from her gaze. "How did she get here?"
Iris clenches her fist, about to speak up, but someone else does before she can even open her mouth. "She's an orphan. We're taking good care of her. She's not going back to him."
It was Glenn who had spoken.
Her heart flutters from the conviction in his words and how protective he sounded. Almost like he was a father himself. She wondered what had changed his mind, but truthfully it was everything that had changed, time and time again.
Andrea nods, obviously taken aback by Glenn's firm words. He was not the person she remembered, but neither was Iris, or any of them really. She brushes it off. "She doesn't have to. I- I can't believe this. Where's Shane?"
There was an uncomfortable silence.
Iris had almost forgotten about Shane since she had been distracted with their new problems at the prison. She quickly realises that Andrea hadn't been there when Shane had died, nor when her brother's old friend had tried to kill her in the woods. It felt like she had been an entirely different girl then. The Iris that she had been on the farm was unrecognisable to how she felt today, and she wasn't totally sure if that was a good thing. Her old self was nicer, more trusting, more innocent.
But now she was dead.
Andrea's expression turns solemn, seeking out Rick once again. "And Lori?"
"She had a girl." Hershel replies, since nobody else moved to speak. "Lori didn't survive."
"Neither did T-Dog." Maggie adds.
Iris tries to compose herself when her thoughts stray to her lost family and friends. Her mind strays to the graves in the field outside; cut off from them because of the cruelty of man just as brutally as they were taken in the first place.
"I'm so sorry." Andrea says, and based on the heartbreak in her voice, she was genuine. She focuses her gaze on Carl whose features were darkened from the shadow of his hat. "Oh, Carl."
Iris runs her hands over her face, trying to look anywhere but Andrea's face. She had once described her as perky, and even through the resolute sadness in Andrea's expression, Iris could tell that she hadn't really changed much. In that way, she almost felt out of place inside the prison amongst the group they had become.
Andrea steps closer to Rick, looking around the room in wonder. "Rick, I- You all live here?"
"Here and the cell block." Glenn answers, pointing to the second bar door that led to their beds.
"There?" Andrea raises an eyebrow and turns back around. "Well, can I go in?"
Rick shakes his head. "I won't allow that."
"I'm not an enemy, Rick." Andrea replies in surprise, her eyes widening.
"But you're with our enemies." Iris pushes away from the wall and crosses her arms.
"We had that field and courtyard until your boyfriend tore down the fence with a truck and shot us up." Rick exclaims.
Iris moves closer to her brother, raising an eyebrow at Andrea. "It's where Lori and T are buried. And now we can't even get to them."
Andrea sighs, putting her hands on her hips. "He said you fired first."
"Well, he's lying." Rick replies, not ripping his gaze from Andrea.
"He killed an inmate who survived in here." Hershel adds quietly.
"We liked him." Daryl says, looking at the ground and adjusting his crossbow. "He was one of us."
"I didn't know anything about that." Andrea defends. "As soon as I found out, I came. I didn't even know you were in Woodbury until after the shoot-out."
Glenn clenches his jaw, taking a look at Iris and staring right back at Andrea. "That was days ago."
"I told you, I came as soon as I could." Andrea replies. Her voice was slowly raising the more questions she was being asked, and she turned to Michonne with skepticism. "What have you told them?"
"Nothing." Michonne replies.
Andrea scoffs, crossing her arms and looking between Rick, Daryl, Glenn and Iris. "I don't get it. I left Atlanta with you people and now I'm the odd man out?"
"He almost killed Michonne and he would have killed us." Glenn says, pointing at Iris. He was angry, but somehow it felt different than what he was like before. He was defending her now, rather than talking about her like she wasn't even in the room, and it made her feel safe.
"With his finger on the trigger." Andrea yells right back, staring at Merle with hardened eyes. "Isn't he the one who kidnapped you? Who beat you?"
"And who is he working for?!" Iris spits, but she clamps her mouth shut as soon as Bonnie flinches on the floor, looking up at her with wide eyes. Iris sighs, running a hand through her messy, dirty hair and kneels down beside Bonnie in a silent apology.
Andrea closes her eyes and tries to soften her tone. "Look, I cannot excuse or explain what Philip has done. But I am here trying to bring us together. We have to work this out."
"There's nothing to work out. We're gonna kill him." Rick says. Iris looks up at him, not expecting the level of dedication in his voice. The Governor or Phillip or whatever people called him was dangerous, and they had to protect their own over everything else. It was only after the attack that Iris started to understand exactly why Glenn was so focused on preparing for war. "I don't know how or when, but we will."
"We can settle this. There is room at Woodbury for all of you." Andrea declares, but her statement holds no ounce of truth.
Even Merle laughs. "You know better than that."
"What makes you think this man wants to negotiate? Did he say that?" Hershel asks.
Andrea shuffles uncomfortably. "No."
Rick grits his teeth. "Then why did you come here?"
"Because he's gearing up for war. The people are terrified! They see you as killers. They're training to attack." Andrea says. Iris bites her cheek and takes Bonnie's head in her hands, trying to cover her ears before she gets afraid. She had already lived through two different shoot-outs in less than a week, and she deserves to just be able to live as a child without fear of death.
"I'll tell you what." Daryl says gruffly, letting his arm fall loosely by his side. "Next time you see Philip, you tell him I'm gonna take his other eye."
"We're taken too much shit for too long." Glenn adds. He moves closer to where Iris and Bonnie were sitting on the floor. "He wants a war? He's got one."
"Rick. If you don't sit down and try to work this out, I don't know what's gonna happen." Andrea implores. Iris knew that she was probably right, but the Governor was not the only person who was getting ready for a fight ― it seemed the only way to resolve anything. "He has a whole town. Look at you. You've lost so much already. You can't stand alone anymore."
"You want to make this right, get us inside." Rick replies, not even taking a moment to consider Andrea's offer of peace. Iris couldn't blame him.
Andrea stubbornly shakes her head. "No."
"Then we got nothing to talk about." Rick turns on his heels and walks off, shaking his head and huffing.
Andrea steps forward as if she was going to follow him, but she stops in place, yelling after him. "There are innocent people!"
Once Rick disappears from sight, Andrea lets out a soft groan, holding a hand to her forehead and refusing to look at any of them. She sits down on the table in defeat, leaning on her fist.
Iris looks up at Glenn, offering him a small smile as she takes her hands away from Bonnie's ears, booping her nose with her index finger. Over Bonnie's soft giggles, Glenn smiles back.
𖤓𖤓𖤓
Andrea decided to leave at dawn.
Rick had offered her a car and a backpack of supplies, which Andrea gratefully took. She wanted to drive back to Woodbury so that she could attempt to arrange a meeting between the Governor and Rick. Iris honestly didn't think that could go down well at all, but Rick was willing to try if Andrea could get the Governor to agree.
Even if Andrea managed to arrange something, Iris didn't think there was any way out of this situation that didn't end in spilled blood.
And it was going to have to be him.
Iris rubs her eyes and lifts her head. She was sitting on the stairs with the rest of the group as the moon started to rise over the night sky. She was feeling heavy and overtired, as Bonnie had been up all last night with nightmares from the sounds of gunshots popping through the prison. Bonnie was afraid of the dark, something that Iris had found out pretty quickly, but last night was the worst of them all. Glenn was still sleeping on the top bunk, but she could hear him shuffling as she comforted Bonnie like he desperately wanted to help.
Iris wouldn't have objected if he had tried.
She leans her head against the railing, fluttering her eyes open and bringing her legs up a little further. Glenn was sitting next to her, even though they were in a weird state of not really fighting but not really speaking either. She sighs, massaging the back of her neck.
Beth was sitting on the floor against the wall with Bonnie resting in her lap. The two of them looked adorable cuddled up together, almost like sisters despite their opposite hair colours. Beth had taken to Bonnie just as fast as Carl and Hershel, taking the little girl under her wing just like she had done with baby Judith. Bonnie lifts her head and locks eyes with Iris, and she smiles.
Iris smiles back lovingly.
Beth pats Bonnie's hair and looks around the room, feeling the quiet and taking a deep breath. Then, she starts to sing.
They hung a sign up in our town
If you live it up, you won't live it down So she left Monte Rio, son
Just like a bullet leaves a gun
With charcoal eyes and Monroe hips
She went and took the California trip
Well, the moon was gold and her hair like wind
Said don't look back now
Iris looks around the room as she listens to Beth's perfectly soft voice, feeling instantly soothed by the words she was singing and the country twang that took over her voice. Glenn was smiling to himself beside her. Maggie was watching her little sister with an adoration that could only come from a big sister. Even Merle looked a little softer.
But Daryl was staring at the ground, dragging his foot over the floor like his mind couldn't quiet. Iris frowns, taking a breath and standing up. After a small internal debate, she pats Glenn's knee before she walks away.
Iris slides against the wall beside Daryl, looking him up and down with a small smile. "You okay?"
Daryl clears his throat in surprise, as if he didn't even notice her presence. "Uh. Yeah. I'm alright. You?"
"Yeah." Iris whispers, crossing one of her legs over the other as she leans against the wall.
Daryl raises an eyebrow and points at his own cheek, staring at her scar. "Looks kinda awesome, you know?"
Iris chuckles at him. "I guess it kinda does. Little battle scar, huh?"
"Yeah." Daryl gives her a small smile before he takes a big breath. "Was it Merle?"
"Oh." Iris breathes out in realisation. She stands up straighter, patting Daryl's shoulder in reassurance. "Daryl, no. No, it was the Governor."
Daryl sucks on his cheek, not quite meeting her gaze but not pushing her away either. "Okay. Good. Was worried for a sec. Didn't want Merle to be the one who..."
"It wasn't him." Iris repeats softly. "And I'm sorry for yelling at you. I get it. If it was Rick, I'd probably feel the same."
The corners of Daryl's lips upturn. "It's okay. You got a cute kid there, too."
Iris slides her tongue over her teeth at the thought of being considered Bonnie's mother. She liked it, really liked it. She leans her head against the wall and listens to Beth's song.
Down by the Riverside Motel
It's 10 below and falling
By a 99-cent store
She closed her eyes and started swaying
But it's so hard to dance that way
When it's cold and there's no music
Well, your old hometown is so far away
But inside your head there's a record
Hershel was standing to the right of her, and when Rick approaches with Judith in his arms, he inches closer.
"Hey." Iris says, looking at the baby that was calmly sleeping in Rick's arms. Rick smiles at her.
Hershel crosses his arms, sending a glance at Rick. "Some reunion, huh?"
"She's in a jam." Rick answers quietly.
"We all are." Hershel replies. "Andrea's persuasive. This fella's armed to the teeth. Bent on destruction."
"We can't let it slide." Iris says, looking from Bonnie resting against Beth to Glenn on the stairs.
"So what do you want to do?" Daryl asks.
Rick shrugs. "We match it."
"I'm going on a run. I'll head out tomorrow." Daryl says, turning his head to look at Rick.
"No, you stay here. Keep an eye on your brother." Rick rocks Judith in his arms, peering at Merle in the corner of the room. "I'm glad you're back, really, but if he causes a problem, it's on you."
"I got him." Daryl answers, his voice so low that Iris could barely make it out.
"I'll take Michonne." Rick decides. The newcomer was sitting on the floor on the other side of the room, hugging her legs and calmly listening to Beth. They had to be cautious of strangers now, but Michonne didn't exactly feel like a stranger anymore.
Iris nods. "Yeah, you should."
"You sure that's a good idea?" Daryl asks.
"I'll find out." Rick glances at Michonne, who didn't look up even though she was definitely within earshot. "And Carl. He's ready."
"That's great." Iris smiles, feeling a rush of pride for her nephew knowing how much this would mean to him. "He needs to feel like he's doing something."
"He will." Rick says quietly. His tone was hushed as he cradled his daughter "You two hold it down here."
"You got it." Daryl replies.
"Of course." Iris says, closing her eyes for a moment and letting her oddly timed content wash over her. She didn't feel peaceful very often, so she had to savour the moments when she did. The four of them fall into silence. Beth's voice seeps into her mind again, calming all of her anxious thoughts to nothing as allows the music to fill her soul.
You got to hold on
You got to hold on, hold on
Baby, you got to hold on
And take my hand, I'm standing right here
You got to hold on
You got to hold on
You got to hold on, baby
AUTHORS NOTE
❥ Welcome back to Doomsday!
❥ Glenn has finally accepted Bonnie and I got to write my very first Glenn and Bonnie scene which I absolutely adored doing so much.
❥ Andrea is back! I didn't write everything that she did while she was at the prison because frankly her arc doesn't really have much to do with Iris and Glenn. She was their friend, but she wasn't so close to them that I needed to work more deeply on it. So I put all of the Andrea stuff in one chapter, I hope it didn't seem too rushed.
❥ My main focus of this chapter was to kind of show both Glenn and Iris' reaction to the attack and to their hug in the heat of the moment. I'm mostly trying to build up to the next chapter by showing the quiet after the attack where they finally have time to sort through their feelings.
❥ Equally, I won't be including content from 'Clear' because, though Rick and Carl are her family, it's not the main focus that I'm trying to bring to this story because Glenn and Iris will always be the main focus! So the end of the season three arc will be primarily centered on their relationship and I will have time to build on other things in the gap between season 3 and 4!
❥ If you enjoyed, please vote and comment <3
