Chapter 62: Spatiokinesis
Spatiokinesis: the ability to manipulate space.
It has been 3 months, 12 days, and 18 hours since they lost Hayley. Over three months since Atlanta lost their most precious heroine.
Life was the same as it was before, except now Tiana and Josh have to go to therapy, mandatory by their parents. All their old bullies have been too scared to touch them now that everyone knows they're the two heroes that nearly died saving the city. And now Tyler's graduating.
Josh didn't realize just how close he was to graduating until Tyler was complaining about the cost of college applications one day. It didn't even feel like it had been that long since they met, but it was almost two years. When they met, Josh was fifteen and Tyler was sixteen. Now, they were seventeen and eighteen respectively.
Time was moving so damn fast, that by the time the three meet to finally destroy the stone, it's New Years Eve.
Tyler, Tiana, and Josh stand in Josh's backyard, shivering in their winter coats. Tyler has a small flame going in his hand to keep them warm, but he has to keep it small or else he'll probably set the lawn on fire.
"Do you really think this is going to work?" He asks Tiana as she and Josh grab each other with barehands.
"I'm the master of destruction, I can handle a little rock," she replies, pulling the stone out of her coat with her free hand. "Hey, guys do you- do you think that when we destroy it... do you think we'll lose our powers?"
Tyler sighs softly, looking at her sympathetically. "I know you're not gonna want to hear this, but I hope so. At least, I hope I lose mine."
"Well, I hope you don't." Josh looks down at the dead grass. "Wait, let me try something first."
"What?"
He lets go of Tiana to pull of his other glove then grabs her again, holding his hand above the patch of grass they stand around. Bit by bit, a small brick fire pit starts to form, complete with dry wood inside and a small metal cover.
"Creation, baby," he says proudly.
"Holy shit," Tyler gawks. "You can really create anything?"
"Yup, but Tiana has to destroy something first in order for my powers to work. It's like equivalent exchange. Energy for energy I guess."
"How'd you guys find out you could do that?"
Tiana grins widely. "I accidentally destroyed his Switch control when we were playing Mario Kart and he recreated it out of panic. Crazy, right?"
"That's so on brand for you two nerds."
She holds the stone out over the fire pit. "You guys ready?"
They nod. Josh gently rests his hand on the top of the stone, feeling the fight of hot and cold coursing through him. Tyler pulls his gloves off and puts a hand on Tiana's arm, placing the other on the stone's side.
As soon as all three of them are touching the stone, it starts to glow brightly. It flashes red, purple, blue, like it's trying to decide who's holding it. They hear a subtle crack as the crystal shatters into three pieces in their hands.
Slowly, the particles making up the stone starts to disintegrate, red and black bits energy drift off with the winter wind. The specks of white and blue drop into the ground, disappearing before they land into the pit. Lavender slivers of glowing grayish smoke slips through their fingers, evaporating as soon as it touches the air.
Josh rubs his fingers together. "Well, that's that."
"That was anticlimactic." Tiana sighs dramatically, wiping her hands off on Tyler's jacket sleeve. "I was expecting some kind of earth shattering explosion."
"Don't jinx us," Tyler says.
A mischievous grin spreads across Tiana's face as she summons a blob of dark energy behind her back, throwing it at Tyler. "This fast!"
Tyler jumps and puts up a force field wall before the blob hits him. "Jesus, Tia!" He shouts.
She cackles as he throws a fireball at her, and she ducks to avoid it. The ball smacks against the fence, setting it one fire.
"Please don't burn down our fence," Josh groans. "We don't have the money to replace it."
"Why replace it when you can make it just as new?"
Tiana throws her hands at the fence and the fire, which had begun to spread to the grass, crawls its way back to the point of impact. The ball of fire launches itself off of the now-fine fence and back to Tyler's hand.
"Okay, so I guess we get keep our powers," he says, putting out the fire. "Yay."
They start to walk back into the house when something cold lands on Josh's shoulder. He touches the wet spot on his jacket and looks up, seeing white speckles hanging in blinding blue sky.
"Snow?" Tiana raises a hand to the air, the little white flakes melting into her gloves. "When was the last time we got snow?"
Tyler tilts his head to the sky and smiles, no doubt thinking of his fallen friend. "It's been years."
