Chapter 61: Chronokinesis

Chronokinesis: the ability to manipulate time.

"Why did you bring me here?" Tyler asks.

"Because we need to do something," Tiana explains as she leads the way through the remains of VESSEL's labyrinth halls, phone light in hand. "And we need you to be here when we do it."

Josh walks behind Tyler, shivering at the cold dampness in the air. He hasn't been here in months, if not a year, and he doesn't like being back. But he and Tiana agreed that it was only appropriate to end things there. For good.

They make it to the room where the Philospher machine stands, vacant and dusty. Tiana walks up to it and takes off her suit gloves, which she's worn almost everyday since they left the hospital.

Josh steps to her side, placing a hand on her bare shoulder. "You ready?"

She flexes her fingers. "I think so. Here goes nothing." Tiana hesitates for a moment before pressing her palm flat against the cool metal.

Slowly, out from where her skin contacts, the machine starts to disintegrate, little flakes of black and white flecks floating into the air and disappearing. Everything, even the glass and plastic, is gone. Nothing but a clean rectangle on the floor indicates that it had even been there.

They look behind them, seeing Tyler's stunned face.

"What the fuck was that?"

"Ever since we put the stone together, anything I touch turns to dust," Tiana explains. "I can't control it, but it only happens when I'm touching either Josh or the stone."

"And I can create anything," Josh adds.

Tyler shakes his head in disbelief. "I'm fucking sorry, what?"

"We know it's a lot to take in right now," Josh says. "I still can't believe it. But we know that you have some connection to the stone too, so we have a theory."

Tiana jumps straight to the point. "We think you can bring people back from the dead."

Josh elbows her in the ribs.

"Ow!"

"What about 'take it slow' do you not understand?"

"We were going to tell him anyways."

"Yeah, but you don't always have to be so blunt."

"Time out!" Tyler shouts, interrupting their bickering. "What the hell are you talking about?"

Josh looks at Tiana. "Go on, do it. Now that you've upset him."

"Ugh, fine." Tiana rolls her and slips her gloves on.

She turns to face Tyler and clasps her hands together, closing her eyes in focus. The building begins to rumble, the sunlight filtering in flickers and goes from light to dark in flashes. Gear shaped discs of black energy circle her, closing in and clicking in place around her waist.

As they turn backwards, time seems to as well. The debris lying around floats into the air and goes back to their proper places, like watching an explosion in reverse. Translucent figures appear around them, the scientists from that night, along with a cleaner, more advanced version of the machine she just disintegrated.

Just like Tiana and Josh had that day of the battle, the three relive that night, in reverse this time. It starts with Alley Cat's creation, the limbs tearing off him as the light emanating from Tyler's younger self is sucked back into him. He falls back into his  mother, and slowly the dead scientists and the machine's pieces start to be out back together.

Tiana stops the image right at the explosion, false flashes of flames illuminating her face.

"See what you did?" She asks. "You jam packed every single soul into Brendon Urie, even you own parents. You put them back together."

Tyler stares at his younger self, who's being flung across them room with his mother's arms around his waist. There's a sliver of purple light that exploded from the machine's inside, reaching out to Tyler's body like a hand.

"Tiana has time powers. I have space powers. Alley Cat had death powers." Josh gestures at the image in front of them. "You- well, you're the missing piece."

"We've been trying to figure out why Alley Cat needed you. And now we know why," Tiana says.

"You have the power over life. You have healing and resurrection, and a bunch of cool powers that help keep you and others safe. You're like the walking embodiment of defense."

"And without you, the rest of us wouldn't be able to even bring anyone back. The last piece is you."

The image fades away, and Tiana sways on her feet, shaking away the fatigue. Josh pulls out the Philospher's stone.

"So what are you saying?" Tyler says accusingly.

"We're saying that you're worth more than you know," Josh says. "And that maybe if you could give the souls some closure, it'll help you move on too."

"Who says I haven't moved on?"

Josh shoots him a look.

His boyfriend's face flickers between rage and consideration. He sighs, obviously choosing the latter, and raises his hand, gesturing for the stone.

"Fine. I'll try it."

Josh tosses it to Tyler, and he immediately gasps when the stone lands in his hands. His eyes flash a bright lavender.

"Woah."

"Right? It's like downing a gallon of five hour energy," Tiana says.

Tyler grimaces and readjusts his hands around the stone. It changes colors completely, the red and blue brightening into a faint purple as it begins to glow in his hands.

"Uh, hey spirits. Sorry for what I did. I didn't mean to do bring you guys back like that."

One by one, the see through silhouettes of the scientists appear in front of him, their bodies breaking off and fluttering away up towards the ceiling. Tyler's mother appears along with his father.

"I'm sorry, Ma," he whispers.

"Don't be, honey," she says. "It was out of your control. I'm just glad your happy."

His father simply smiles and nods, and that seems to be enough for Tyler. They disappear and are replaced with Brendon Urie and another scientist holding hands.

"I'm sorry for all the pain I caused you." Brendon looks at Tiana as he speaks. "None of us were in our right minds."

"It's okay," Tiana respond. "We all fuck up."

Josh can tell that no, it's not okay, because her fists are flashing with dark energy, but Brendon doesn't notice. He just nods and evaporates alongside who they assume was his husband.

Next is Ashley. She doesn't look any of them in the eye and dissolved without a word. And then...

Hayley shows up.

Her eyes are honey brown, and she looks like she's eighteen and not almost thirty. "Oh. This is new."

"Oh, my-" Tyler drops the crystal. "Hayl."

"Hey, you did it. I knew you could."

"You knew?" He shrills.

"Of course. You were basically my kid, I knew you three better than I knew myself. I'm proud of you guys."

Josh, who hadn't expected her, just stares. "W- what do you need to move on?"

"Nothing. I just wanted to say hi." She winks at a shocked Tyler. "I told you that you could do communing too."

Tyler rolls his eyes. "You're a ghost and you're more positive than when you were alive."

"What can I say? I kinda like this whole being dead thing." Hayley grins.

"Why did you want to say hi?" Tiana asks.

"Because I know you're going to destroy the stone like I asked and this'll be the last time I'll be able to talk to you three. And.. I wanted to see you. Just one more time before forever starts.

"I miss you," the three day at the same time.

She chuckles and waves her hands as if the say 'I told you so.' "I knew you'd say that. Well, anyways, let me get my life lesson speeches out before Ty runs out ghost juice."

"Ghost juice?"

"Tiana, you're the strongest out of the three." Hayley ignores Tyler and Josh's sputters of protest as she turns to Tiana. "Don't argue with me, you know it's true. Not just power wise, your mind was incredibly durable. To female sane after direct contact with the machine that have you your powers when it drove Alley Cat crazy? That's impressive. You were the toughest and most destructive kid I ever had the pleasure to train, and I'm proud to see how far your powers have gone since I died. And I'm sorry. It was my fault that you lost your wing, and I never forgave myself for that."

She looks at Josh. "I know I called you weak before, but it was the only way I could get you to push yourself further. You have so much untapped potential, Josh. You're Tiana's other half, you have just as many capabilities as she does. And I hope you find a way to unlock all of that beauty inside of you. I'll be honest, I was scared to give you the task I did. But you did it. You listened and you didn't bring me back, just like I asked. Thank you."

At that last comment, Tyler shoots Josh a confused look, but he avoids eye contact.

"Tyler, you're like a baby brother to me," Hayley says. "I loved watching you grow these last couple years, even when you pretended that you didn't care about anyone. You went from broody asshole to sweet asshole, and that's about as much development as I could anticipate, but I'm glad you finally found some friends. And a boyfriend. Your powers are strong and crazy and uncontrollable, but I know with the help of these two geniuses at your side you can do anything you can want. I love you so fucking much, and I'm sorry I won't get to see you grow anymore."

Tyler looks down at his shoes. "You didn't have to leave."

"Oh, honey." She smiles tearfully. "Nobody wants to go, but it happens, and sometimes there's nothing you can do but go forward. I told you I wouldn't always be around to protect you. You need to learn to live without me."

"I can't."

"You can and you will. Because you have a new family now. Go kick some ass for me."

Hayley sighs, wiping her eyes, and nods towards Tiana, who's frozen in place. She looks at Josh and smiles, then at Tyler and rests her hand on his cheek.

And just like that, she's gone, the only thing left behind being the fragments of light as she disappears one last time into the stagnant air.
