Chapter 59: Creation
Creation: the ability to create anything and everything from nothing.
According to Hernando, Josh and Tiana were in comas for two weeks.
Two. Weeks.
There's blips of memory between the darkness, like his mother reading The Lightning Thief at his bedside, Tyler's shouting protests from a hallway, and the constant steady beat of the heart monitors.
When he does wake up, it's slowly and takes him a day until he can stay away for longer than thirty seconds. His mom never left his side. Josh wakes up, she's there, and when falls asleep, she's there. As much as he loves to see her, the guilt eats him alive. He can only imagine the pain she's going through.
Tyler was never in a coma, but he wasn't allowed to leave the hospital until they cleared him. Tiana woke up first because she's always one-upping him, but only by a day. Her bed was placed next to his at their parent's request, their hands clasped together for most of their time there.
The day after Josh wakes up, Tyler walks in with his whole torso wrapped in bandages, the yellow remains of healing bruises staining his cheeks and arms. A bulging scar in the shape of a claw mark stretches across the side of his neck, fresh and pink.
"Look who finally decided to wake up," he says as he approaches Josh's bed.
Josh, whose voice still hasn't returned, just smiles sweetly at his boyfriend. He raises an arm, which has an IV and four other wires in it, to touch his chest then another new scar just under his left eye.
Tyler flinches when Josh's fingers graze his chest, but leans into the touch once his hand rests on his cheek, kissing Josh's palm. "I can't heal nerve damage, remember?"
"Morning to you too, Ty," Tiana says from her bed.
"Hey, Tia. Looks like I missed out on all the fun. I guess you two defeated Alley Cat, huh?"
"Actually that was Hayley," she rasps out.
His face falls. "Right. I...I heard about what happened. I'm sorry you guys had to deal with me on top of Alley Cat and Frangipane."
"It's chill. You were nowhere near as hard to defeat."
"Funny," Tyler drawls. "Go back into a coma, won't you?"
Tiana snorts. "Can you ask my dad to get me to fettuccine? That's my favorite."
Josh laughs hoarsely, throwing himself into a coughing fit. He flails his hand around, grabbing the fabric of Tyler's hospital gown. Tyler reaches for an inhaler on the bedside table, holding it to Josh's lips.
Struggling a bit to breathe, he manages to inhale one puff before falling limp back in the bed. He points to his lips and mouths 'water.' Tyler hands him a glass, which he downs quickly.
"You okay, angel?" He asks.
Josh nods.
Tiana forces herself up, throwing her legs over the side of the bed. He sees that she's covered head to toe with bandages just as he is. She has stitches on her forehead and across her collarbone, as well as a cast around her left leg. The blood that had been in the whites of her eyes are nearly gone, but the bruising is still there, just faded. There's something different about her appearance, but he can't put his finger on it.
"Do I really look that bad?" She jokes when she notices him staring. "You look just as bad."
Tyler rolls his eyes. "Don't listen to her. She looks like a prop from an Indiana Jones movie."
"At least I'm not a furry," she retorts.
"For the last time, I'm not a- forget it."
Josh smiles. He reaches for Tyler's arm, lifting himself up. The sheets cover his legs, which he can feel are bandages. His arms are covered in with little scabbing cuts, a long greenish yellow bruise stretching up from his hands to the inside of his elbows. When he poked them, they hurt, but only a little.
He looks up at Tyler inquisitively.
"I don't know, buddy. I overheard the doctors saying maybe it was from an excessive amount of blood vessels popping, but then again, they've never had to treat two anthropomorphic nerds."
Tiana flips him off. "Don't worry, Josh, I've got them too."
She lifts up the corner of her arm's bandage, revealing a matching bruise. Josh finally realizes what was bothering him... her head is shaved, her once untamable hair barely long enough to curl.
His eyes go buggy and he pats his head, feeling the scratchiness of regrowing hair. Tyler notices what he's doing and takes his hands, holding them.
"They had to shave you two. I don't know why, but I heard something about 'remarkable brain damage.'"
"Brain damage my ass," Tiana shoots back. "The doctors said that our cells were fucked up. Like mine are acidic or whatever and yours are 'an incredible scientific discovery that could help us find the cure for the incurables.'"
"So I was oversimplifying. He just woke up from a coma," Tyler chastises her.
"So did I. You forget, we're geniuses." She taps her head.
Tyler mocks her, and she repeats it until they're both babbling intelligibly at each other. And that's how the day goes, the two teasing each other and Josh just watching it go on, just happy to see the two people he cares about most alive.
