Chapter 58: Superhuman Durability

Superhuman Durability: the ability to withstand damage beyond human norms.

Josh doesn't remember much of what happens immediately after Hayley's death. All he knows is that he crawled over to Tiana and passed out beside her, whatever energy he borrowed from the stone running out.

He wakes up to an empty, deep blue sky above him, sirens and shouting in the distance. None of the stars are out tonight. Around him, there are witnesses and a cleanup crew who look at the two with fearful curiosity.

They jump back when Josh manages to lift himself off the ground, one asking if they need help. He doesn't respond, only touching his face, bringing back blood on his fingers.

When he breathes, Josh can hear his ribs shift and crackle. They're definitely cracked. And his right hand is sprained, if not broken. Hundreds of tiny bleeding cuts cover his hands, going halfway up his forearms. His legs are the same way.

A layer of white steam curls off of him. Putting the crystal did more than explode. They won't know the real damage it did until later, though.

Looking down at Tiana, he realizes she's also conscious but struggling to get up. He holds a hand out to her, which she takes gratefully.

Tiana is, to put it lightly, fucked up. Her head stopped bleeding, but the side of her face is covered with dried peeling blood. She can't put any weight on her left leg, and her hands look just like Josh's, shredded and bloody. The sclera of her eyes are blood red instead of white.

Hayley is still lying amidst the rubble, right where he left her, as well as Alley Cat's body, but Tyler is gone.

"W- where's the other guy?" He asks a construction worker, pointing to where Tyler had been

"Oh, Chimera? He was taken to the hospital by some nurse folk," the man responds. "They just took him. I think you two should go there too, if I'm honest. Ya look worse for wear."

Tiana shakes her head. "No. I'm going home."

Another worker looks at them, doing a quick double take. Josh realizes by touching his face that neither of are masking their faces. Everyone will know who they are now.

"You- you're kids," the worker stutters. "How old are you?"

"Sixteen," Josh says. "Thank you two for the concern, but I promise we'll be okay. Sorry for the mess."

Josh nods to the man, turning to follow Tiana down the street towards their neighborhood. They pass strangers who he assumes took shelter once the fighting started, staring at the two with shock, and he realizes that the people they pass are the ones he couldn't save in the theater's collapse, including the girl in the wheelchair and her parents.

The fight cost them so much, but they saved so much more in the process.

"Did we do it?" He asks Tiana.

She grimaces, not even able to smile. "I think we did."

They zombie walk the whole way to their houses, too tired to teleport. Their heavy legs carry them, and the blood on Josh's wings uncomfortably dry. Tiana limps, struggling to keep up even with his sluggish pace. He notices a trail of fresh blood running down her leg.

"Oh, god. It's over," she says, as if realizing it for the first time herself. "He can't hurt us anymore."

"There'll always be another Alley Cat to fight," Josh replies quietly.

"And we'll be there next time too, right?"

"How can we?" He sniffles. "Hayley's gone. We- we can't do this without her."

"She made you promise her, didn't she? To do what she asked no matter what?"

"... yeah. She did."

"She asked me to destroy the stone once it was put back together," Tiana says. "Hayley walked into that fight knowing she was going to die, and we helped make sure she did."

Josh wraps an arm around her shoulder, barely able to move at this point. His body feels like a marble statue. He doesn't know how he's still walking.

"Maybe we should've gone to the hospital like they said," she says, ignoring the blood staining the corners of her mouth.

"Yeah, me too. Too late now."

She forces out a chuckle. "I just wanna see my dad."

The walk reminds him of that first night, when they walked home after their first encounter with Alley Cat. They'd always been together, shoulder to shoulder, inseparable by everyone, even death.

They stop in front of her house first, all the shutters closed, no lights on. Tiana looks back at Josh and hugs him as tightly as she she can, which isn't that hard but Josh winces anyways. "I love you."

"I love you too, Tia. Go. Your dad's waiting."

Tiana nods and smiles, tears of joy already welling up, and waddles up the grassy path. She makes it up to the door. As Josh starts to pass her house and go towards his own, Tiana collapses on the porch, the heavy thunk causing a light to flicker on from the living room.

He would run to her, but Josh can't find the energy to do anything else besides forcing himself to walk up the steps to his own front door. The lights are on inside, and he notices his sibling's cars outside in the driveway. They're about to have one hell of a night.

"Mom?" He calls out in a scraggly, weak voice. "I'm home."

The door swings open just as his fist goes to knock, the inside light blinding him for a moment. His whole body becomes an iron anvil, weighing him down, down, down.

"Josh? What the hell happened to you?" He focuses on Abby's shocked expression in front of him.

"I just saved the city," he mumbles, stumbling into the foyer. Abby moves to let him in, watching with fearful confusion. "I think I should've gone to the hospital."

He sees him mom run in from the kitchen right before he blacks out.
