Chapter 51: Momentum Manipulation

Momentum Manipulation: the ability to change the momentum of a force or object.

Time passes, and Josh opens his eyes without a clue of what time it is or where he is. He expects to be in heaven or hell or whatever exists after you fall of a 40 foot robot. Instead, he finds himself sitting on the roof of an intact theater, the steady hum of traffic reaching its absolute.

Josh turns to Tiana, who immediately opens her eyes, looking at him in surprise.

"Did you-"

"Was that-"

They both stop, their stumbling words interrupted by a call from the radio.

"Weird how?"

They both look at the radio and then back at each other.

"Uh, can you repeat that?" Josh responds.

"You said you had a weird feeling. How was it weird?"

His eyes widen, and Tiana's face goes from confusion to realization.

"Oh my god," she says.

"What? Is something wrong?" Tyler asks.

Josh can't help but smiling. The theater didn't collapse. Tiana wasn't killed. Tyler wasn't crushed.

They have a second chance.

"Give me a sec, Tati," he says.

He teleports to the roof of Canopy Hall, where Tyler and Hayley are on stake out. They both jump at the sight of him.

"Is it time? Are they there?" Hayley asks, her question faltering as Josh grabs their hands, teleporting them back to the theater.

"What the hell?" Tyler looks around, irritated. "You brought us here for nothing."

Josh hugs him. Tiana joins in.

"Have y'all gone crazy?" Hayley chastises, "we're in the middle of a war."

He turns and wraps his arms around her, burying his face so she can't see his expression. Hesitantly, she puts her arms around him, hugging back.

"I broke the promise," he whispers. "I'm sorry."

"What're you talking about?"

Josh shakes his head. "I- I think I died."

Hayley pulls him a bit away, gently placing a hand on his cheek. "Was it a dream?"

A heavy thud redirects their attention to the street, where, just like before, the lioness walks into view, followed by the fox. Tiana and Josh both immediately grab hands, popping up on the roof of the theater.

"It felt so real," she says, crouching down to look over the edge.

"I know." Josh joins her, looking for Alley Cat and his lookalike. "How did you do that?"

"I don't know, I guess we both ended up dreaming at the same time?"

"Or it did happen and we just... time traveled back."

"Well, I distinctly remember getting kebabed."

Josh shoots her a tired look. "Really?"

"What? Oh, I also had this." Tiana digs into the concrete, where a sliver of black shadow has formed a crevice in space.

She retracts her arm, holding a shining red gem bigger than her hand. It glows eerily as it catches the setting sunlight. Josh's jaw drops.

"Holy shit, so it was real?"

"In a way," she explains. "I guess it happened but at the same time it didn't. Like a parallel universe, or an alternate timeline."

"Oh, so since you little shadow pocket transcends time and space-"

"I kept the crystal from that timeline."

He nods. "Makes sense. So, if the stone is with you, then how is-"

As if on cue, a large screeching sound makes them jump. The lioness' eyes go dim and it starts to tilt over, leaning towards the hospital. They both jump into action.

"You hold it in place, I'll take it apart."

"I was thinking the same thing."

Josh stands and thrusts his hands out, trying to summon whatever power he used before. The robot's head, which had been turning, stops. A glassy blue sphere surrounds it, not stopping the fall but slowing it down so much that he can see a metal panel sliding off of it at a snail's pace.

"How long can you hold that?" Tiana asks, pulling her mask back on.

"Long enough," he responds gruffly, straining without the extra energy he had before. "But I advise you hurry."

Tiana nods and hurls herself off the edge, piercing the bubble he'd created and landing on the lioness' back. Josh watches as she summons whips of shadows, lashing at the joints.

From across the street, Tyler and Hayley are fighting Alley Cat. He assumes it's the real Alley Cat this time, because he sees metal bits and explosions flying around. They seem to have it handled for now.

The fox is slowly making their way to the hospital, just a building away. Josh doesn't understand the motive of the robot. Sure, it's Alley Cat's calling card, but what purpose do they serve other than just causing mass destruction? Does he even have a plan?

"Tati, how much longer?" He grunts, his hands shaking as the momentum of the falling robot starts to speed up bit by bit.

"I need you to hold it for thirty-two seconds!" She snaps back.

Parts that she severed float in slow motion to the ground. Josh's arms up to his shoulders go numb, but he still strains himself, forcing the bubble to stay intact. Finally, his body gives up, just in time as Tina slices off the lioness' head and the robot falls like building blocks, leaving various sized craters in the asphalt. The head detours slightly and scraped the side of the hospital before it lands on a hopefully empty truck parked on the side of the road.

Josh falls to his knees, eyes unfocused. His body shakes with the amount of energy he just used. He teleports himself to where Tiana sits on the curb and lies flat on his back, the staticky feeling returning to his body.

"Did we do it?" He asks.

"Y-yeah," Tiana replies breathlessly. "But we've got one left. You good to go?"

"Yup, just give me one second. I still can't feel my legs."
