Chapter 49: Shadow Walking
Shadow Walking: the ability to teleport through shadows.
Tiana had been trying to do the same thing Josh was on the lioness- disassembling the robots from the inside. The metal had been melted away instead of just punched through, leaving a large tear near the back of the neck. She'd stopped what she'd been doing as soon as she spoke, back straightened and hands covered in black flames.
"Kitty Hawk," he says, "go fucking berserk."
Tiana is off before he's finished speaking, running up the head of the fox and plummeting down. Josh watches her in awe as she grabs onto the maw of the robot, swinging herself under the belly and disappearing into the shadowy metal.
He looks back up and sees her reappear under the lioness, clawing her way up the side. Josh feels pride bloom in his chest, seeing how far she's come in her strength, and then turns to continue her work of dismantling.
She'd burned through most of the wires, little sparks and flashes of fire appearing now and then. Josh flexes his fingers and then goes elbow deep into the robot's head, reaching for the blue stone in the center of the brain.
"Icarus, Kitty Hawk!" Hayley shouts through their earpiece. "Frangipane is here, we need help!"
"We're dealing with our own shit right now!" Josh responds, grunting as the fried wires poke and shock him.
"There's robots with her, a wolf and a lion." He hears a cacophony of explosions before it's cut off.
"Yeah, we have the same thing too." Josh, now down to his shoulder in the mechanical mess, feels something hard and cold under his fingers and grips it as best he can, wrenching it out. He falls back, holding a glowing cerulean crystal in his hand.
The crystal feels cold even through his gloves, like dry ice, with a radiant energy coming off of it. Josh exams it closer, unable to take his eyes away from the entrancing blue light. It is jagged on one end, like it had been broken off of something. Just holding it, Josh feels powerful.
"Half of the Philospher's stone," he says, breathless in wonder. "Holy shit."
A loud crash and screech of crunching metal directs his eyes away from the stone and to the robot underneath him. Without the crystal operating it, the fox has begun to break down, bits of suspending metal and rock falling to the street below.
Josh can see some cars parked on the side of the road, wounded people running into the theater and other buildings for shelter from the fight. A girl in a wheelchair sits on the sidewalk, crying alone as people pass her without a second glance.
The fox's limbs start to fall apart, releasing slabs of concrete and wood, metal scraps and rocks. Once this thing goes down, it'll block any help from getting to anyone who's injured
He tucks the stone into his suit pocket and drops off the fox, landing right beside the little girl. She screams when she sees him, but stops when he raises his hands, hushing her gently.
"Hey, it's okay," he says soothingly. "What's your name?"
"L-Lucy."
"Hi, Lucy, nice to meet you. My name's Josh. I'm going to get you out of here."
Sniffling, she nods, obviously scared out of her mind. Josh grabs the back of her wheelchair and helps her into the safety of the theater. An older couple rush out as soon as they see her out of the receptionist window.
"Oh, my god, thank goodness you're okay," the woman sobs, hugging the girl.
The man, who must be the Lucy's father, stares at Josh with disbelief, who awkwardly pushes the wheelchair closer to them. "I found her on the street."
"I'm sorry. The crowd separated us," the father explains. "And they wouldn't let us out to find her."
"Well, now she's safe."
"Icarus, how can I repay you?" The mother asks through tears.
Josh smiles at the name. It's growing on him. "Keep her safe, and we'll be even."
He teleports back to the fox, seeing it being barely held up by the wires running through its body. The wires make it so if it falls, it'll fall either into the theater, or into the parking lot right beside the hospital.
Tiana is fighting Alley Cat on top of the lioness, which has also begun to crumble. Where the lioness is placed, if it falls, it'll go right into the side of the hospital, and it's tall enough to his the rodó.
Josh runs underneath the fox, holding his hands up.
"Please let this work," he whispers. He extends his arms as far as he can, forcing himself to focus on holding up the robot to keep it from collapsing.
This probably isn't in his power list, but he barely knows how his powers work. Spatial manipulation must encompass some telekinesis, right?
Josh feels a heavy weight on his shoulders, making his knees shake. He looks up, seeing a faint blue energy surrounding the fox's joints. The scraps that had been falling now float in the air, trapped in this circumference of power.
"Kitty Hawk!" Josh yells out, hoping she can hear.
"I'm a little busy here," Tiana grunts.
"So am I. Don't let the robot collapse."
"What? Why not?"
"They're meant to do as much damage as they can. It might fall into a building." Josh feels like a pile of bricks is falling on his chest.
"I can't, Alley Cat's keeping me busy." She sighs. "I can do that. Come on, you fucking freak! Hit me!"
"Chimera, I need help," Josh calls out.
"Can't, busy," Tyler responds.
"Thus plan is going to shit," Josh grumbles. "Guys, listen, we need to stop the robots from falling. They're meant to-"
"The wolf took out Canopy Hall!" Hayley exclaims.
"Fuck!" Josh shouts in frustration, the translucent bubble shivering.
A billboard sized piece of wood falls, aiming straight for him. Josh lets go of his pose and rolls out of the way, now being pelted by falling debris. He darts through with little success, metal shards cutting into the exposed skin of his forearms and calves.
By the time he makes it out from under the fox and onto the street, it's already in a free fall. The right legs both stick up as gravity takes hold and the robot comes crashing down, right into the theater.
