Chapter 3: Power Replication

Plowed Replication: the ability to replicate the abilities of other superheroes.

As soon as the door closes behind them, all of the light escapes the room. Darkness blankets the two except for slivers of yellow sprinkled through the tarped hole dozens of feet above them.

Josh turns, feeling the dirt on his hands, and slides his hands down the back of Tiana's sweater.

"Dude!" She shrieks, trying to twist and see where he'd wiped his hands. "Nasty ass!"

He laughs, his eyes slowly adjusting to the darkness of the building. It's not anything like he expected it would be. While he thought there would be rubble of classrooms and cubicles, what he sees is the a large warehouse looking space below them.

The catwalk they're standing on branches halfway across the vacant space, hanging above the black abyss of the maybe six stories down to the ground floor. He takes a step forward, grabbing the rails, and feels the walkway sway.

"This is the place you wanted to come to?" Josh pats his pockets for his phone. "This is where people like us come to die, Tati."

"Oh, you're white, you'll be fine," she says.

They turn their phone's flashlights on, and immediately Josh can see just how rundown the building is. Above them is where the classrooms and offices must've been, because he sees the crumbling, cracked ceiling about thirty feet over their heads.

Tiana slowly walks down the catwalk towards the middle of the building, using her light to search whatever was below them. "I bet you five bucks that this is where Alley Cat was born," she says.

"Doubt it," Josh responds, catching a glimpse of something darting across the ceiling. He blinks and brushes it off being his imagination. "A super villain who uses giant metal cats as weapons coming from an organization used to find cures to incurable diseases? Sounds kind of far fetched."

"Anything's possible. Plus, the timing between the Vessel bombing and Alley Cat's first appearance is more than coincidental. What if he used to work here, but got caught in some sort of radiation that allowed him to manipulate metal?"

"You're such a conspiracy theorist, you know that, right? That idea is so insane it might as well be something out of a- watch out!"

Josh flashes his light at her. Tiana's too busy looking down through the guardrails to notice the woman in white barreling straight down towards her. So, naturally, he screams. Tiana catches sight of her and screams too, falling onto her back.

The woman lands on her feet with a heavy thunk, her presence separating Josh from Tiana. Oddly enough, she doesn't seem to realize the two kids are there. She just grabs onto the rail and hops down, being followed by a shadow against the wall.

Tiana looks up at Josh, her tawny skin gone pale, and asks in a shaky voice, "did she just- was that who I think it was?"

"Uh. I think so."

They both scramble to the rails as the catwalk begins to lower itself, shaking as it does so. Josh glares at Tiana, thinking it was her, but she just stares back with wide eyes, shaking her head. Seeing the gravity in her face makes his frustration melt away. She's just as scared as he is.

Josh gulps, seeing his phone light reflect off of metal somewhere on the other side of the building. He doesn't get a good look at whatever it is before Tiana snatches Josh's phone and turns the flashlight off. She does the same to her own, stuffing both of their phones into her sweater.

Medium crouches on the floor several stories below, her white outfit glowing in the barely lit area. She has something in her hand. Josh thinks it's a staff at first, but as they get closer, it appears to look more like a walking stick.

"Come out, little kitty," she calls, swinging the stick in her hands. "Enough of your games."

She turns abruptly and out of her hand explodes a column of fire, illuminating the entire ground floor. A man standing behind her jumps back, rolling out of the way of the blast. When he stands, Josh can see metal glinting all over the man's body.

"Holy shit, that's Alley Cat!" Tiana whispers, smacking Josh's shoulder excitedly.

Josh stares in awe. He'd looked up to the Medium since he was a kid, watching every clip of her fighting on YouTube, wishing he was a hero too. Seeing it in person is a whole other experience.

Alley Cat puts an arm across his chest, and the building rumbles. The catwalk's descent jitters, the metal creaking and swaying. Josh can see something metallic moving against the wall behind the man.

"I'll finish what I started," he said.

"I wont let you destroy this city for something as stupid as a rock." The Medium stands up and holds a hand out in front of her, stalagmites of ice forming up her arm and onto the walking stick.

"Do you think Chimeta will show up?" He asks.

Tiana shrugs. "How awesome would that be?"

"I know where your friend is," Alley Cat taunts. "He won't succeed. Neither of you will."

The Medium takes a step back. "I can try."

She launches at him, Alley Cat blocking her hits with his forearms. He kicks her legs from under her, but she does a backflip, spinning in the air and landing on her feet. Tiana slowly peaks her phone out of her sweater to record the fight.

"I think we should go," Josh whispers.

"What, and miss this?" Tiana shakes her head. "No way, José, I need to see how this ends."

"It'll end with us getting caught unless you put your phone away."

"Wait, let me just record for a couple minutes!"

Josh reaches for her phone, but Tiana stands and holds it above her head. She seems to forget he's just a tall as her, because he manages to grab the top half of her phone and yanks it.

Tiana pulls back, both of them playing tug of war with the device until her fingers slips. Josh falls back, the phone flying from his hands. It hits the catwalk with an echoing clang.

The two of them freeze. Without moving, Tiana looks down, her wide eyes growing wider. He can barely read the words she mouths to him, but they make him starts to shake.

They're looking right at us.
