Chapter 19: Mind-Reading
Mind-Reading: the ability to read or sense the thoughts of others.
Josh doesn't know when he comes to, but when he does, the sun is hanging low in the sky. He jerks up at the sight of his unfamiliar surroundings, but is stopped back a stiff pain in his left shoulder.
A bandage covers his entire shoulder, from his elbow all the way to the socket. His vision swims when he moves, so Josh slowly descends back into the comfy cushions of a granny couch. He feels a couple smaller ones over his face with his right hand. A thick knitted blanket lies across his legs.
He's in a living room, he knows that much. A metal stand against the wall holds a fairly large TV and a few game consoles, along with cluttered rows of movies and video games. Another couch identical to the one he's on sits across the room from him, right beside the front door. A large window with tightly closed shutters is above the couch.
Weird. Josh is sure that this isn't a house he recognizes. The last thing he remembers is him falling into the bushes. That's when he realizes that not only is he in a strange house, but he's shirtless with a bloody towel wrapped around the marginal covert of one of his wings.
"Relax, you're safe."
A female voice nearly makes Josh jump out of his skin. He turns his head as far as he can and sees an older blonde girl standing near the edge of the living room near an arched walkway.
Josh pulls the blanket up to his face. "Who the hell are you?" He asks.
"Jenna. Don't worry, dude, I live here. I guess Ty hasn't told you about us yet."
"Ty? You mean Tyler?"
"Ah, yes, Mister Tyler Robert Joseph. That young fellow." She laughs. "He should be back any minute. I think he was picking up Rosa from her gymnastics lessons."
"What- where am I?"
"You don't know? You're the one who apparated into Dahlia's prized roses."
"I... I don't even know how I got here."
Jenna's expression switches from playful to concerned. "This is our house. You really don't remember?"
Josh shakes his head, which makes his headache even worse. He covers his eyes and gestures vaguely.
"Glasses. I need my glasses."
"Oh. Gotcha."
He feels Jenna gently push the glasses on until they rest neatly his face. "Thanks."
"No problem," she says, leaning against a nightstand at the foot of the couch. "Anything else? A burger or something? You must be starving given how much time you've been out."
"How do you know who I am? And how long have I been out?"
"Oh, Tyler talks about you guys all the time. I think you've been asleep for I don't know, twelve hours?"
"Twelve hours?" Josh slowly begins to remember the night before, the fight with Alley Cat, Tiana. "I need to leave." He swings his legs over the couch, attempting to stand before being thrown back into the squeaky cushions by a wave of nausea.
"Woah, woah, woah, you can't go anywhere like that." Jenna runs up and steadies him as he tries once again to stand.
"My friend, she's in trouble and it's my fault." Josh doesn't protest as she gently pushes him back into the couch. "Come on, let me go. I'll be fine."
She raises her eyebrows. "Is it that girl you were mumbling about in your sleep? I thought she was your girlfriend."
"She's more like my sister. Look, Jenna, just tell Tyler that I left. It's not like he cares about me anyways."
"Of course he cares about you. Tyler's a sweetheart under all of that bullshit sarcasm."
"I'll believe it when I see it," Josh says bitterly.
On cue, the front door swings open, and in comes Tyler charging through with a dark skinned girl thrown over his shoulders. She can't be more than nine, and has two stylish buns tied with pink ribbons.
"Look what I found in the front yard!" He exclaims in a silly voice. "It's hideous, isn't it? What should we name this foul creature!"
"Ty-Ty, let me go!" The girl shrieks, smacking his back with her tiny fists.
Tyler tosses her onto the couch, completely unaware that Josh is sitting right there.
"Never! Not until this evil is vanquished!" He starts tickling the girl, making her squeal even louder. "I will snuff you from this mortal realm!"
The girl continues to giggle and scream until she notices Josh. She stops and points, completely unprompted. "You destroy our bushes!"
Tyler finally looks up and for a minute Josh doesn't even recognize him. The happiest he's ever seen him since they met was when Josh tripped over his own wings and fell into a urinal. This look of childish euphoria is so... not Tyler.
His new happy face dissolves back into tired eyes, empty grins. Exactly what Josh is used to.
"How's the wing?" He asks.
Josh looks at him with a blank stare. "It's fine."
"Is this the bird boy you told us about?" The little girl is still pointing at Josh. He has to smile, she's just too cute.
"Yup, this is him." When Tyler speaks to her, his voice goes up an octave and loses its growly undertone. "How's he behaving, Jen?"
"He just woke up, actually."
"Wait, I'm confused." Josh points to Jenna, who's blonde with soft blue eyes. Tyler has the typical combination of brown hair, brown eyes. The little girl has dark skin, coily black hair, and blue eyes bluer than he's ever seen before. "Is she adopted?"
He doesn't mean for it to sound as rude and ignorant as it did, but as soon as he says it, his face starts burning red. Tyler just stares at him with an "Are you fucking serious" look.
"We're all adopted," Jenna explains, visibly trying to hold in her laughter. "You should meet Seoyung when she comes home from college."
Of course. It's a foster house.
"I'm sorry, I didn't mean it-"
"Do I look like Tyler's ugly butt face?" The girl jumps off the couch and marches up to Josh before he can find a response. "I'm Rosa by the way. Nice to meet you, bird boy."
"My name's Josh, actually. Not bird boy," he corrects her.
"Oh. Isn't that your hero name, though?"
Josh shoots Tyler the stink eye.
"When I can move, I'm kicking your ass."
