Chapter 11: Empathic Perception

Empathic Perception: the ability to fully interpret and replicate the emotions, moods, and temperaments of others.

"What you're about to face is a test to determine the extent of your abilities," Hayley says, holding her walking stick like a sword. "As of right now you've discovered only a portion of what you're capable of. I want to help you discover the rest and enhance what you already have."

Josh and Tiana stand in the middle of Hayley's empty martial arts studio, Hayley and Tyler sitting on a bench across them respectively. It's Sunday, which means they have one day to learn how to control their powers before being thrust back into the throes of high school.

Tiana raises her hand. "Exactly how are you going to do that? Is it like a written test, or..?"

"Oh, Tia is so shitty at written tests," Josh laughs.

"Fight me, Josh."

"Actually, that's exactly what you two will be doing," Tyler says.

They both go silent, looking at each other in disbelief. Hayley snickers.

"Don't worry, you won't be fighting each other," she reassures them. "I'll train you, Tiana, and Tyler here will work with Josh."

"Why do I get the scary guy?" Josh protests.

Tyler grins at him in a way that makes Josh's fight or flight go off. He looks like a crocodile that finally got close enough to grab a peaceful, very weak gazelle. Josh wonders how, just a few days ago, he thought Chimera was just a broody, cute, misunderstood hero. Now he's just a broody, cute, scary asswipe.

"Relax," Tyler says. "I don't bite."

"That's not reassuring."

Hayley throws two backpacks at them. Josh catches his and zips open the first large pocket, finding a pair of silver steampunk-esque goggles with thick blue lenses sitting on top of a bulky, leathery cerulean body suit. He also catches a glimpse of gloves and boots in another pocket, along with a first aid kid, a simple face mask matching the suit, and a fair of regular also steampunk-styled glasses with the same bluish tint.

Tiana pulls out a similar body suit but in red. "Are we color coordinating now?" She asks, dropping it back into the bag to rummage some more.

"These suits are built to withstand nearly anything we throw at it," Tyler says, ignoring her snarky comment. "They should also be able to adapt to your body and whatever powers we don't know about when they show up."

"This is just like The Incredibles," Josh jokes, smacking the goggles over his eyes.

As soon as they're on, Josh's vision becomes crystal clear, no blinding lights or headaches. He can finally see without constantly squinting through the darkest sunglasses he can find. It's like a factory reset of his senses. Well, his visual senses, anyways.

"Woah." Josh blinks and squints, tilting his head from side to side. "I can see."

Tyler cooes. "Aw, he's like a little puppy. You wanna fight crime, little puppy?"

"That's enough, Ty," Hayley chastises, thought Josh can tell she's trying to hold back a smile. "You two get dressed. We won't go easy on you."

Tiana and Josh look at each other, as if just now realizing what they've gotten themselves into. They go their separate ways to the bathrooms to change.

Josh's fits firmly on his body, but there's hardly enough space for his wings to move. He hears Tiana call out to him about the same problem. When they come back out, Hayley is gone. The shutters are tightly drawn and every light is off.

"Uh. Why's it dark?" Tiana asks, pulling at the collar of her suit.

Josh sees a flicker of movement in the darkness to his left. "I think this is our first test."

"And what's that? Hide and seek."

"Maybe we need to find them. I mean, I can see find so I don't know what-"

Suddenly, Josh feels a puff of hot air on the back of his neck and then a knee striking right between his shoulder blades. He grunts and falls straight down like a tree, smacking his face against the glossy wooden floor.

"Lesson one. You can't rely on just sight." Tyler's voice comes from somewhere above him. "You've got six senses to use, so use them."

"What? But we only have- oof!"

Tyler stomps hard on Josh's back, harder than should've been allowed, crushing the covert feathers on his wings. All the breath escapes Josh's lungs, making him wheeze.

"Where am I? What am I doing?"

"Being an asshole," Josh sputters, flailing around in an unsuccessful attempt to escape.

"What am I feeling right now? How does that affect my fighting? Can you tell where I'll be next?"

As soon as Tyler's foot leaves his spine, Josh flops onto his back, gasping for air. At this point, he's more pissed off than scared. He sits up, scanning the room for Tyler's scrawny body until he sees him crouching behind a bench. Was that bench there before? "Where'd Tiana go?"

"Your babysitter has her own challenges to worry about with Hayley, so don't get your boxers in a twist," Tyler chuckles. "Wow, you're really angry. I can feel it."

"Yeah, no shit I'm angry. What're you, a vampire?"

"Lesson two. Watch your enemy. Find out their powers, and you'll find a weakness."

Josh slowly stands, keeping an eye on Tyler in his peripheral but still staring straight ahead. "Yeah, yeah. Hey, Yoda, if you're going to beat me up and talk shit, I could just go to school and get the same treatment without wearing a ridiculous outfit."

Tyler pauses. "Now that's just fucking sad."

He launches himself forward, but Josh jumps to the side, laughing in triumph. His pride in outsmarting his new bully is short lived as Tyler grabs Josh's upper arm, kicking out the backs of his knees and launching him over his shoulder.

Josh's first reaction to anything is to scream, so he does, but not before phasing through the floor and falling out of the ceiling, landing right on top of an unsuspecting Tyler.

"Can't you control where you land?" Tyler asks, shoving Josh off of him.

"If I did, would I be in this position?" Josh shoots back, massaging his shoulder. He curls into a ball, his back against one of the pillars. "This obviously isn't working. We've only had these powers for a day and Tiana's learned more about hers than we have about me. I probably don't even have any other powers."

Tyler's stern expression softens and he snaps his fingers. The lanterns hanging from the supporting pillars flicker to life, revealing everything in the room had been moved around. The window blinds are hanging from the bathroom doors, while the bathroom signs are on the ground, along with any other piece of furniture.

A portion of the furniture is, missing, which is odd in and of itself, but then Tyler looks up. Josh follows his gaze and sees where it had gone. Several chairs and a woven basket on the ceiling stick to the ceiling, a samurai sword hanging dangerously from the strap of its sheath. The hook on the basket pops open, releasing an onslaught of yoga mats onto their heads.

"What the hell?" Josh looks around. "Is that why you turned the lights off? So I couldn't see your interior decorating?"

"I have to admit, I turned the lights off for dramatic effect. But this wasn't me," Tyler says with the same crocodile smile, standing and kicking away one of the mats.

Josh gapes at him. "Did I hit you too hard? Did I give you a concussion? Because there's no way in hell I could've done this, I didn't even know-"

"You didn't need to know. Your body knows what to do." Tyler walks up and offers Josh a hand, who hesitantly takes it. "Congrats, kid, you just learned how to manipulate space."

"What now?" Josh asks.

"Now, we have fun."
