Chapter Twenty-Seven | For Forever

"Uni, it was in your best interest, " Addie told him. "You were unstable."

Uni let out a soft scoff. "Right. My best interest. Sure. I think it's in my best interest if I'm given a couple more days to myself." Uni's voice was hard.

"Right. Come on," Sal responded, exiting the room first. The others trailed behind them, Dawn closing the door behind him.

"He was really pissed," Ate quietly observed.

"He has every right to be," Sal told her. "I mean, we did keep him from knowing about Dawn for two days. He doesn't like being left out of the loop."

"It was for his own good. But he doesn't realize it," Addie muttered.

"And that's fine for now. It's not that bad," Sal told her. Addie only shrugged.

"I guess," She replied. "Hey, Dawn?" The mentioned let out a small hum. "Why don't I introduce you to some of the books we have in the library. I'm sure you have free time." Addie didn't give Dawn time to respond before grabbing her hand and pulling him downstairs behind her. She just needed to step away for a moment.

"Are you alright?" Dawn asked as soon as they stepped off the last step. "You haven't left Sal and Ate's sides any now you're pulling me away."

"I just needed a second," Addie told him. "It's just been a lot." She continued her path into the library, letting go of the man's hand as she stepped inside. "Oh! I have a couple of good ones you might like."

Dawn only frowned as Addie's mood quickly changed. He watched as she raced to one of the closest bookshelves, running her fingers along book spines before pulling two books out that were beside each other.

"Dear Evan Hansen and Be More Chill. These two are fantastic," Addie told him as she walked back to him. "Come on. I'll explain them to you."

The two took a moment to settle side by side on the room's couch. A calm moment would be nice.

After a moment of silence, Ate felt a hand in her own. It didn't take themher long to know it was Sal. There was a small squeeze before Sal disappeared into their room.

After standing still for barely a minute, Ate quickly entered Tommy's room. The said man wasn't startled as the teen entered.

"What the hell was that?" Ate heard Jon ask as he appeared on Nick's bed.

Ate only frowned. "Shut up, Jon," She muttered before sitting beside Tommy, who had a guitar resting in his lap.

"Is he here?" Tommy's voice was quiet. He earned a nod.

There was a beat of silence.

Tommy adjusted the guitar so he was holding it.

He took in a short breath.

"End of May or early June. This picture-perfect afternoon we shared," Tommy's voice was soft as he began to sing. Ate quickly recognized the song.

"Drive the winding country road. Grab a scoop at  À La Mode and then we're there."

Ate noticed Jon staring at Tommy.

"An open field that's framed with trees. We pick a spot and shoot the breeze like buddies do. Quoting songs by our favorite bands. Telling jokes no one understands except us two. And we talk and take in the view."

Tommy's hold on the guitar clearly tightened and Jon's eyes started to shine with built up tears.

"All we see is sky for forever. We let the world pass by for forever. Feels like we could go on for forever this way. Two friends on a perfect day."

A small sniff was heard from Tommy.

"We walk a while and talk about the things we'll do when we get out of school." A soft chuckle escaped Tommy's lips. "Bike the Appalachian trail or write a book or learn to sail. Wouldn't that be cool?"

Tommy took a second to wipe his nose.

"There's nothing that we can't discuss like girls we wish would notice us but never do. He looks around and says to me, "There's nowhere else I'd rather be" and I say, "Me too"."

A single, soft sob was heard from Jon. It made Ate's eyes well with tears.

"And we talk and take in the view," Tommy's voice cracked. "We just talk and take in the view."

"All we see is sky for forever. We let the world pass by for forever. Feels like we could go on for forever this way, this way."

Ate gently grabbed onto Tommy's arm, but he didn't react.

"All we see is light for forever. 'Cause the sun shines bright for forever. Like we'll be alright for forever this way. Two friends on a perfect day."

Tommy's voice swelled as he continued.

"And there he goes racing toward the tallest tree. From far across the yellow field, I hear him calling, "Follow me". There we go wondering how the world might look from up so high. One foot after the other. One branch then to another. I climb higher and higher. I climb 'til the entire sun shines on my face."

Tommy's volume dropped and tears quickly rolled down his cheeks.

"And I suddenly feel the branch give way. I'm on the ground. My arm goes numb. I look around. And I see him come to get me. He's come to get me. And everything's okay."

Tommy had to stop for a moment to control the silent sobs that tried to escape.

"All we see is sky for forever. We let the world pass by for forever. Buddy, you and I for forever this way, this way."

Tommy let a sob wrack his body before continuing.

"All we see is light. 'Cause the sun burns bright. We could be alright for forever this way. Two friends. True friends. On a perfect day."

Tommy was able to hold himself together for a moment before breaking into loud sobs and grabbing onto Ate. She only responded by wrapping her arms around him.

She looked to Nick's bed to try and see Jon, but he was gone.
