Chapter Thirty-Seven | If I Could Tell Her | Finale: Part One

"Addie. Wake up."

Addie woke with a start, her eyes wide as she sat up.

"Fuck," she muttered as she felt a small tug on her arm.

"Hey, careful with the needle. Well, I mean, you can take it out now that you're up."

Addie frowned as she looked up and met eyes with a certain teenager.

"Ate?" She muttered, gently rubbing her arm.

"Good. You remember me. Do you remember everything that happened?" Ate asked.

Addie only stared at her in confusion. And then her expression slowly turned to understanding.

"That wasn't a dream," she whispered, her eyes quickly fillinf with tears. "Nick's dead."

Ate was quick to hug the younger teen, careful of the newly stitched opening in her chest.

"He's dead." There was a moment of mostly silence besides the sounds of Addie crying.

Some time passed and she had calmed down for the moment.

"I, um, found something while the rest of you were asleep. The police said they found the cabin and they grabbed basically everything," Ate told her before going to the side. "They found his journal."

Addie's eyes widened as she was handed the journal. "They found it," she murmured as she slowly started to flip through the book.

"Look in the back," the older told her.

Addie took a second before doing exactly that. Her eyes slightly widened at the sight of small envelopes tucked into the back. "Did he...?"

Ate nodded. "I read mine. I think you should read yours."

A moment passed before she actually started to read and it took another minute for her to actually finish. By the end, tears were streaming down her face.

"I.." She whispered. "Okay."

Her eyes turned to the side as she heard a groan. "Ashlie," she whispered, her eyes wide.

"Ugh.. Yeah?" Ashlie muttered as she slowly sat up. "Where am I?"

"You're at the hospital, Ashlie. Do you remember any of what happened?" Ate asked. She only stared at her. It took a few moments for her eyes to widen.

"Is he really..?" She asked, earning a nod.

"He left you a note," Addie said as she pulled it out.

"I.. I can't. Can you?" Ashlie quietly asked. The younger looked to Ate before opening it.

The words made a small smile appear on her face.

"Hey. Did they bring my guitar?" She asked with a sniff. Ate nodded and only took a moment to hand it to her.

Addie took in a shaky breath before slowly start to strum a familiar song.

"He said there's nothing like your smile. Sort of subtle and perfect and real," she softly sang.

A small smile appeared on Ate's face.

"And he said you never knew how wonderful that smile could make someone feel," Ate continued with a smile.

Ashlie silently listened to the two, her eyes slightly wide.

"And he knew whenever you get bored you scribble stars on the cuffs of your jeans. And he noticed that you still fill out the quizzes that they put in those teen magazines."

Addie pulled her guitar closer to herself.

"But he kept it all inside his head. What he saw he left unsaid. And though he wanted to. He couldn't talk to you. He couldn't find the way. But he would always say."

The youngest felt tears fill her eyes.

"If I could tell her. Tell her everything I see If I could tell her how she's everything to me. But we're a million worlds apart. And I don't know how I would even start. If I could tell her. If I could tell her."

Ashlie sniffed and gave a small smile. "Did he say anything else?" She asked, earning a small smile.

"He said you looked really pretty."

Both teens were cut off as they felt a small, but still sharp, hit on their necks.

Ate was the only one at the moment who could see Nick behind the two with a glare.

Addie shook it off.

"And he wondered how you learned to dance like all the rest of the world isn't there," she continued, confused as to why Ate wasn't. She didn't ask.

"But he kept it all inside his head. What he saw he left unsaid."

Ate rejoined her.

"If I could tell her. Tell her everything I see. If I could tell her how she's everything to me."

Ashlie joined for the next line.

"But we're a million worlds apart."

Addie smiled.

"And I don't know how I would even start. If I could tell her."

Ate stopped and watched Addie.

"If I could tell her. But what do you do when there's this great divide?"

Ashlie frowned. "He just seemed so far away.."

"And what do you do when the distance is too wide?"

The oldest scoffed. "It's like I don't know anything."

Addie opened her mouth to continue, but she stopped and her eyes widened as Nick, though a bit transparent, appeared in front of the three.

"And how do you say 'I love you'?" His voice was shaky as he sang. "I love you. I love you. I love you."

Tears were streaming down Ashlie's face.

"But we're a million worlds apart. And I don't know how I would even start. If I could tell her. If I could."

Everyone was frozen for a moment.

Addie stood.

She made her way to Nick and reached out.

As her hand met with a solid arm, she let out a sob.

"Nick," she choked out before tightly wrapping her arms around him. She didn't register as Ashlie joined for a moment. The three stayed silent besides crying as they hugged.

Unknown to the three, Ate had managed to slip off.

All she left was a note that read a set of coordinates.
