Chapter Thirty | Day Two

It was the next day.

No one really spoke.

Cory stuck by Uni's side, helping him whether it came to new bandages or eating or doing everyday things for them.

Ate, Sal, and Addie settled down in Ate and Sal's room, talking about anything that popped into their heads.

Tommy and Dawn began to get to know each other after both settled down in Dawn's room. They hadn't spoken and Tommy wanted to change that.

Ashlie sat at the piano, her fingers lightly resting on the familiar keys. She couldn't remember the last time someone had touched the piano.

She sighed as she wracked her brain for a song she may know. One popped into her head

She took in a deep breath and exhaled before starting the familiar beginning that resembled a heartbeat.

"This is gospel for the fallen ones locked away in permanent slumber. Assembling their philosophies from pieces of broken memories," Ashlie's voice was soft as she began to sing. She quickly remembered how soothing it was to do so.

"Oh, this is the beat of my heart, this is the beat of my heart. Oh, this is the beat of my heart, this is the beat of my heart."

Nick walked by the room door but was quickly pulled back at the sound of a familiar melody. His eyes slightly widened at the sight of Ashlie, her eyes focused on her fingers and the keys and her back straight.

"The gnashing teeth and criminal tongues conspire against the odds. But they haven't seen the best of us yet," Ashlie let her eyes close. "If you love me let me go. If you love me let me go. 'Cause these words are knives that often leave scars. The fear of falling apart. And truth be told, I never was yours. The fear, the fear of falling apart."

After a moment, Nick stepped inside, making sure to stay as quiet as possible. He settled back against the wall.

"Oh, this is the beat of my heart, this is the beat of my heart. Oh, this is the beat of my heart, this is the beat of my heart."

Ashlie took in a deep breath as she took a second. Everything was piling up on her. Her voice became shaky.

"This is gospel for the vagabonds, ne'er-do-wells, insufferable bastards. Confessing their apostasies. Led away by imperfect impostors. Oh, this is the beat of my heart, this is the beat of my heart. Oh, this is the beat of my heart, this is the beat of my heart."

She sighed.

"Don't try to sleep through the end of the world and bury me alive. 'Cause I won't give up without a fight."

Nick pushed off the wall before settling down beside Ashlie. She was quickly startled but settled as she saw it was Nick. He gave a quick smile before beginning to play beside her.

As he began to sing, she stopped.

" If you love me let me go," Nick sang. Ashlie quickly joined back in.

"If you love me let me go. 'Cause these words are knives and often leave scars. The fear of falling apart. And truth be told, I never was yours. The fear, the fear of falling apart. Oh, the fear of falling apart. Oh, the fear, the fear of falling apart."

Both were surprised by how easily their voices matched, but neither said anything.

"Oh, this is the beat of my heart, this is the beat of my heart," Nick sang. Ashlie grabbed the overlapping.

"The fear of falling apart."

"Oh, this is the beat of my heart, this is the beat of my heart."

"The fear of falling apart."

"Oh, this is the beat of my heart, this is the beat of my heart."

"The fear of falling apart."

"Oh, this is the beat of my heart, this is the beat of my heart."

"The fear of falling apart."

The song came to a slow stop.

Neither said anything as they stopped playing.

Ashlie leaned against Nick and closed her eyes. It only took her a moment to fall asleep.

Nick froze as he heard soft snores coming from Ashlie.

But he quickly relaxed and drifted off to sleep himself.
