Chapter 5

"Oh, hi," Izuku said with a nervous wave at the other man. "I was just, uh, looking for Katsuki's room. I was gonna hide out there."

Shinsou's eyes traveled from him, to the drunk guy on the floor, and back to Izuku, remarkably unruffled for the situation that had just fallen into his room. "Sato trying to get in your pants?"

"Is that his name?" Izuku asked distractedly as he nudged the guy with his foot. "He actually thought I was trying to throw myself at Kacchan. Then he tried to get in my pants."

Shinsou sighed as he tossed his phone onto his bed and made his way over to Sato. He crouched down and patted the guy's back. "C'mon dude, you can't sleep here. Go pass out on Kaminari's futon."

Sato grumbled something that Izuku missed, he wasn't even sure if it was words or just muffled grunts. With the help of Shinsou, he was able to climb to his feet and wobble out of the room.

Izuku watched him leave with a cautious gaze. He'd been hit on by a lot of drunk people and not all of them gave up after face-planting.

Once he was sure Sato wasn't going to turn around, he directed his attention to Shinsou. He lived in the house, if anyone was going to be able to point out Katsuki's room, it'd be him. "Sorry for... well, whatever that was. I really was just trying to find Kacchan's room," he explained with a frown.

"Yeah, you don't want to do that," Shinsou said with a quiet laugh as he glanced at his open door. "Heard him and Kirishima giggling down the hall a few minutes ago."

Izuku stuck his tongue out at the mental images that accompanied his retelling. "Great, guess I'll just go sit in a corner until Sho's decides I've had enough enrichment time."

He'd already made up his mind and turned for the door when Shinsou spoke again.

"You can stay here if you want."

Izuku turned back for no other reason than his sheer surprise. Shinsou was a quiet loner he barely considered an acquaintance, why on earth would he offer to let Izuku hide from a party in his room?

"Don't look at me like that," the purple-haired man said with an eye roll as he headed back to his bed, flopping down and grabbing his phone again. "I'm an introvert surrounded by extroverts, I get not wanting to be at a party."

Izuku took a hesitant step further into the room, half expecting the offer to be a trick. "But you barely know me."

"Don't need to," Shinsou said without looking his way. "You're my friend's younger brother. I'd be kind of a dick if I just kicked you out."

Well, that makes so much more sense, Izuku thought bitterly. Of course, the attractive guy was only being nice to him because of his brothers. When was it any different? Shoto and Katsuki were the only reason anyone decided to be nice to him, especially in high school. Izuku had been an idiot to think that anything would change in college.

"Right," Izuku mumbled as he looked around the room. It was pretty plain, a black bedspread, an old wooden dresser, and a few posters littering the wall. It fit what little personality he'd seen from Shinsou.

"Thanks for the offer, but I think I'll just get an Uber and head home," Izuku pointed a thumb behind him toward the door. "If you see Shoto, will you let him know? I doubt he'll check his phone until tomorrow."

"Midoriya," Shinsou said, letting their eyes meet. "I promise I do not mind if you stay in here."

"But-"

Shinsou cut him off with a sigh, nodding his head toward the end of his bed. "Just sit down and scroll through Instagram or something, Todoroki never lasts longer than two hours at these things."

"Well, if you're gonna be all aggressive about it," Izuku mumbled as he took small steps to the end of Shinsou's bed and sat right on the edge with his feet still on the carpet.

"That wasn't aggressive," Shinsou said bluntly, already diverting his attention back to his phone.

Izuku rested his elbows on his knees and let his hand support the weight of his head. He seriously regretted now bringing a drink at that moment. Not only was he painfully sober for the awkward interaction, but he had nothing to keep himself busy.

"I don't know, felt pretty aggressive to me," he said with a huff.

"What're you doing?" Shinsou asked, causing Izuku to glance at him over his shoulder. The other man's brows were pulled together in confusion at him. "Do you not have a phone or something?"

"It's dead," Izuku said with a shrug of one shoulder. He could sit and stare at a wall for a few hours, wouldn't be the first time. His thoughts were entertaining enough to make it bearable.

Shinsou's confusion melted away to amusement, one side of his mouth quirking up. "How did you plan to call that Uber?"

Izuku quickly turned away as the tips of his ears started to warm. "Okay, so I was going to walk, whatever."

"It's the middle of the night."

"And?"

Shinsou shook his head with silent laughter. "It's a very big, very scary city, you know."

"I'm not defenseless," he griped in return. Even though Izuku knew walking around the city alone at night was a horrible idea, he couldn't help his snark. He'd been babied his entire life, first by his overprotective mother and then by his overprotective older siblings. Sue him for wanting one person to not think he was seconds away from disaster.

"You are two feet tall."

Izuku let out a winded sigh at the insult. He was so used to short jokes that they only annoyed him now because he'd heard them all before. He was short, he knew that, try a little harder to hurt his feelings next time. "I'm five-five, but close enough I guess."

Shinsou clicked the power button on his phone and tossed it to the side. The two-foot-tall guy at the end of his bed was way more interesting than doom-scrolling. "If you're so miserable here, why'd you even come?"

"Sho dragged me," Izuku explained, glancing over his shoulder and realizing that Shinsou had, for some reason, given him his full attention. "Said something about me not wasting my college years locked in the apartment... or something, honestly I was paying much attention."

"That's rich, coming from him," Shinsou said with a quiet laugh, pushing himself further up his pillows.

Well, I guess if we're doing this, Izuku thought to himself, turning around so he could rest his back against the wall and partially face the other man.

"Tell me about it," he grumbled, letting his head tilt back so he could stare up at the ceiling. "The only reason he wasn't a recluse in high school was because he was too pretty for people to ignore. Deep down, he's more antisocial than me."

"Not that deep down," Shinsou drawled with a small laugh. "When I first moved in here, he'd show up and refuse to talk to anyone but Bakugou. He'd literally just... sit there in silence."

Izuku nearly cackled from the new information, a sharper-than-normal laugh leaving his lips. "So, you're telling me that he did the exact same shit his freshmen year that I'm doing? Great."

"Dare I say he's worse?" Shinsou teased, flipping his phone absently in his hand. Izuku's eyes were drawn to the movement, connecting the dots that the other man had also needed something to do with his hands. "At least you talked to us the first time we all met."

Izuku nodded with a satisfied smile, relaxing back against the wall. "I can't wait to hold that over his head."

"Hey, now," Shinsou said, his voice suddenly getting a more serious edge as he nudged his foot into Izuku's leg. "Don't go blackmailing my friend with my insider knowledge."

"Then what was the point of telling me?" Izuku asked, confusion slipping into his voice.

"I don't know, so you wouldn't feel like you're doing bad at the whole college thing?"

"I don't feel that way."

"Cool, it worked."

"But I never felt that-"

"It worked. Let this be my good deed for the day, okay?"

"Fine, fine, whatever. You did a good dead or something."

"Thanks, shortie."

"Wow, I let you win and you repay me by insulting me."

"It wasn't an insult, it was an observation."

"Your good deed has been revoked."

"Oh, come on!"
