When Izuku arrived home later that day, Todoroki took one look at him, turned on his heels, and disappeared into his room with a slam of his door. Izuku supposed it could have gone worse.
He didn't end up hanging out with anyone that day. Leaving the apartment right after scaring the shit out of his brother felt too far, even for him. Instead, he finished his paper and spent the rest of the day watching pointless videos on his laptop until he fell asleep.
The rest of the week went like this: Izuku and Todoroki would wake up, ignore each other's existence, go to class, come home, and retreat to their own rooms. Todoroki had no desire to talk to Izuku, and he decided not to push it. The half and half man couldn't stay mad at him forever; it was usually easier to wait it out.
The route changed that Saturday when Todoroki barged into Izuku's room, grabbing his abandoned hoodie from his desk chair and throwing it at his face. "C'mon, we're going to Katsuki's," he said in a short and clipped tone. He didn't wait for a response and immediately left the room.
Izuku scrambled to his feet, throwing his hoodie on as he went. "Oh, so you're talking to me again?" he asked once he entered the hall and saw his brother slipping his shoes on at the door.
Todoroki showed no emotion as he looked up. "Are you coming or not?"
He rolled his eyes at the response, pushing his hood down and tugging on his shoes. "Why're we going to Kacchan's all of a sudden?"
"It's Saturday," Todoroki said as if it answered all his questions. When Izuku motioned for him to go on, the taller brother rolled his eyes. "We go over there for dinner every Saturday. How have you not noticed that?"
Izuku trailed after him out of the apartment, shoving his hands in his pockets to fight off the brisk autumn air. "I don't pay attention to that stuff, you know that."
"Sure."
The car ride was silent and painfully awkward. Izuku rested his head against the window and did everything in his power to ignore the tension, but it didn't help. Todoroki hadn't been so mad at him in a while; he'd forgotten what it was like to be on the receiving end of the man's cold shoulder.
When they arrived, Izuku was abandoned at the door as Todoroki took off into the house without a word. "Great, this dinner will go really, really well," Izuku mumbled as he kicked his shoes off and turned into the living room. He could hear Kaminari and Sero for the entryway, making a beeline for them.
"Why so blue, Mido?" Kaminari asked as soon as he laid eyes on the other man. He scooted over slightly and patted the spot next to him on the couch.
Izuku collapsed into it without any further prompting. "Sho's been ignoring me all week."
Sero leaned forward to see around Kaminari, his eyes darting to the kitchen before locking onto Izuku. "Is because of... you know?"
"He doesn't know who," Izuku mumbled, sinking further into the couch. "But he knows I was gone all night, didn't answer any of his texts or calls, and showed up at home covered in hickeys. At this point, it doesn't even matter who I was with."
"He was probably just really worried," Kaminari said with a small frown on his lips. "Don't worry, dude. I'm sure he'll be back to normal in no time."
"Fingers crossed," he muttered bitterly back. "He's a pain in the ass to live with when he's like this. It was his turn to do the dishes yesterday, and he took all of mine out of the sink and put them on the counter. Just refused to wash them."
That earned a snort of laughter from the blond beside him. "I didn't know Todoroki was the petty type."
"He's the pettiest person I've ever had the misfortune of meeting," Izuku admitted with a huff.
"You don't mean that," Sero said in a knowing tone. "This time next week, I bet you'll be back to being all weirdly brotherly."
"Dinner!" Ashido called from the kitchen.
Kaminari leaped to his feet, stopping for only a moment to offer Izuku a hand. When he accepted, he was physically dragged into the other room and deposited into a chair. Kaminari took the one to his left, and Sero claimed the one to his right.
As everyone else found their seats and grabbed their food, the room fell into a tense silence. Todoroki was refusing to look at anything but his plate, where he was repeatedly stabbing his chicken and not eating it. Bakugou looked just as pissed but not bothering to pretend to eat, sitting back in his chair with a scowl. All that, paired with Izuku glaring holes into the tablecloth, and it didn't take long for the rest of the roommates to feel too awkward to talk.
"This feels like an intervention," Izuku mumbled, using his fork to absently push around the food on his plate, not bothering to look at it.
"Interventions are way more fun," Shinsou corrected before taking a bite of his own chicken.
Todoroki's eyes narrowed. "You would know."
"Okay," Shinsou said, setting his fork down. "Who the fuck pissed in your cheerios this morning?"
The other man clenched his jaw, his eyes glancing up at his younger brother, but he said nothing else.
"Kaminari," Ashido said suddenly with a painfully awkward laugh. "Start talking."
"Uh..." For the first time in his life, it appeared the blond was speechless.
"Way to go," Izuku mumbled, glaring over the table at his two-toned brother. "You dragged me all the way here just to keep ignoring me."
"How else was I supposed to figure out which of my friends you slept with?" he snapped, throwing his fork on the table and leaning back in his chair.
"Why are you so insistent on it being one of your friends?" Izuku asked, not noticing his voice rising in volume. "I am capable of meeting people without your help."
Todoroki sat forward again, his elbows resting on the table. "Name one other person in town that isn't sitting in this room."
Well, fuck, he thought. He hadn't made a single friend on his own since moving here. As a last-ditch effort to throw his brother off, he said the one name he could think of, "Monoma."
Todoroki's eyes narrowed at his answer. "He has a girlfriend, try again."
"You think one person gave me all of these?" Izuku asked, gesturing to his neck where the hickeys were still visible but fading back to his natural skin tone. With no other options, he decided to double down on his lie.
Ashido pushed her chair back, looking around the table. "This really feels like something we do not need to be here for."
"Ash can go," Bakugou spoke for the first time that night. "The rest of you fucks are gonna sit here until we figure out which one of you slept with our brother."
Izuku abruptly stood, knocking his chair back in his anger. "It's none of your goddamn business who I sleep with! I'm eighteen, I can sleep with whoever the fuck I want."
"It's not about you," Bakugou shouted right back, never one to take it lying down. If you were going to fight with him, he'd spit it right back at you with no remorse. "It's about the fact we trusted them with you, and they went behind our backs!"
Shinsou sighed, rubbing his jaw with one hand. His eyes were half-lidded, making him look like he was ready to fall asleep at any second. "No need for the huge scene, you two very obviously already know who it was. The intervention comment, by the way, low blow."
"So is sleeping with our fucking brother!" Bakugou shouted across the table at him, his knuckles turning white as he gripped the wood with everything he had.
"It was just sex," Shinsou said with an eye roll, slouching back in his chair at an angle so he didn't have to turn his head to see Bakugou. "I'm failing to see why it's such a big deal. It's not like I took his fucking virginity."
Izuku pretended like his words didn't hurt. Of course, it was just sex; that's what Shinsou did, and he knew that going in. The man had literally told him he wasn't interested in a relationship before they even kissed. He had no one to blame but himself for reading too far into.
"Shinsou," Todoroki said, his voice the deadly calm before the storm. "You have ten seconds to run as fast and as far as you can."
"Do not fight in the kitchen," Ashido snapped, her arms crossed over her chest as her eagle eyes looked between all three men, waiting for one of them to make a move.
"We won't have to if he makes it to the front door in time," Bakugou snapped, readying to lunge over the table at Shinsou.
Izuku was fuming where he stood, about to throw a fist right in his brother's face. "Touch him, and you both lose me forever. I swear to god I mean it," he threatened, his nostrils flaring as he glared them both down in turn.
"Over Shinsou?" Bakugou asked in utter disbelief. "He's not fucking worth it."
"It's not about him," Izuku shouted, throwing the blond's own words back in his face. "I'm tired of you two doing this shit every fucking time I meet someone. Do you even know how many of my partners you two scared off in high school? I wasn't able to have my first kiss until you both graduated because no one wanted anything to do with me while you two were hovering over my shoulder and threatening to knock their teeth out for looking at me. I'm sick and fucking tired of your guard dog bullshit! I don't need to be protected anymore; I'm not some crying toddler for you two to coddle."
His chest was rapidly rising and falling as he ended his rant. He felt surprisingly better after getting his frustrations out in the open; they'd only been building up for the past four or five years, ever since he found out what a relationship was and decided he liked the idea of having someone to love.
He was stupid for thinking that would be the end of it because, of course, it wasn't. Todoroki stood from the table, placing his hands down and leaning forward. "Sorry if the last year hasn't instilled confidence in us about your decision-making abilities."
"Would you stop throwing that in my face?! My mom died, Shoto. I watched her get sick, I watched her wither away, and I watched her die. My sincerest apologies that my teenage brain couldn't handle that and I made poor decisions. I don't know if you noticed all the way out here, but I've gotten better," Izuku hissed at him. "I'm fully capable of making my own decisions now and sure as hell don't need either of you telling me what to do."
"Are you better, Izuku?" Todoroki asked him, a mean look in his eyes. "Because from where I'm standing, it looks like you're about to nose dive right back into last year."
"Alright, that's enough, all of you!" Ashido shouted, jumping to her feet. There was a stern scowl on her normally cheerful face, and the sudden contrast was almost enough to calm Izuku down. She pointed at Todoroki, "You, go home," then to Shinsou, "You, find somewhere else to stay for the night," then Bakugou, "You, go to your room," and finally to Kaminari and Sero, "You two stay with Midoriya."
Todoroki hung his head before standing up straight. "Ash-"
"No, all of you go," she said again, crossing her arms over her chest. She was fully in mom mode and no one would be able to argue with her. "This fight is getting nowhere, and sooner or later, one of you is going to go too far. I'm putting an end to it until you can all have a constructive conversation, got it?"
"Fine," Todoroki huffed, putting his hands up and starting for the front door with no other words.
Bakugou made no move for the stairs, not until Kirishima tugged on his hand. "C'mon, Kats." With that, they both disappeared up the stairs.
"I did not see it going that bad," Shinsou mumbled as he watched the couple ascend the stairs.
"Shinsou," Ashido snapped.
He held his hands up in surrender, pushing his chair out and climbing to his feet. "I'm going, I'm going. Calm down."
He looked back at Izuku one last time before leaving the kitchen. "Sorry about that, shortie. I wouldn't have-"
Izuku shook his head as his arms wrapped around his torso, hugging himself for any semblance of comfort. "That fight was a long time coming. It wasn't your fault."
Shinsou just shrugged one shoulder. "I'm sorry anyway. I'll text-"
"No, you're on a Midoriya time-out until further notice," Ashido said, no room for argument in her voice. Her eyes were still narrowed, pinning Shinsou in his spot.
Shinsou pointed at her with a brow raised as he took a few steps backward toward the front door. "You're doing exactly what he just flipped out on his brothers for doing, but have it your way. I won't text you," he said the last part to Izuku, winking before he turned and left down the hall.
Once the three men were officially gone, Ashido fell back into her chair, all the tension leaving her body with one deep breath. "Jesus fuck, I thought living with all boys would mean less drama."
"I'm sorry," Izuku whispered, already feeling his eyes gloss over with tears he was trying to fight back.
The woman was back on her feet in a blink, pulling Izuku into a tight bear hug. "Don't apologize, sweetie. You didn't do anything wrong, those three just... Well, Shinsou and Bakugou find it hard to be civil on a good day."
A choked sob forced its way from Izuku's throat as he fully gave into the embrace. The whole fight had dredged up memories he'd been trying his hardest to forget, from his mother's death to his senior year of high school. He hated being reminded of it all.
"Come on, hun," she said gently into his curls. "Let's go to Kaminari's room and you can talk, or we can distract you. Whatever you're feeling up for, okay?"
He weakly nodded, pulling away and using the sleeves of his hoodie to wipe the tears from his face.
As soon as Ashido's arms were gone, Sero was throwing an arm over his shoulders and hugging him to his side. "Kaminari's got the new Call Of Duty on his play station upstairs. I bet I can get more kills than you."
A watery chuckle left his lips at the normalcy of the taunt, exactly what he needed. "You're on," he mumbled back, his arms wrapping around the man's waist as they headed for the stairs.
Sero gave him a tight squeeze. "Don't think I'm gonna go easy on you just because you're crying."
"I wouldn't dream of it."
This is going to be so much FUN holy fuck. Can you believe that just last week I was debating deleting this fic?
