Chapter 26: Be Honest With Myself
Luke's POV
2 months later - February
"If you don't put away the guitar. I'm going to destroy them."
Ashton and Calum looked down at me from where I sat. They looked pissed and ready to forcibly remove me from the recording studio.
"Guitars are expensive, Ashton." I pointed out.
"It'll be worth it!" Michael's voice come from the speakers above us. I looked over to where he is and saw that he's holding the microphone from the control panel outside the booth.
Ashton nodded in agreement. "For the past 2 1/2 months, you've been moping around the place like a zombie."
"It needs to end now." Calum added.
"What's wrong with being concentrated on work?" I said.
Calum glared at me. "What the hell is wrong with you? You've been like this ever since Clara left."
I stared at him, then looked down at my hand. "Nothing."
"Yeah? Then why does the mere mention of her name turns you into a blubbering mess?" Michael asked as he joined the 3 of them inside the booth.
I scowled at him. "I don't blubber."
"So you don't care about the photo of her kissing that guy? You don't feel sick to your stomach seeing it?"
I crossed my arms, pretending this conversation doesn't bother me in the least. "Those photos don't concern us."
"Of course, they concern us! We're the ones who put her in the spotlight!" Calum yelled.
"No." I corrected. "I'm the one who did that. Plus the press is already speculating that we broke up so none of those photos can hurt the band."
"So you haven't called her then? To see how she's handling all of the media attention?" Ashton asked.
"No" I gritted my teeth. "I haven't." Why are we still talking about this?
"Well, that's great!" Ashton grinned. I eyed him suspiciously. "Now, I can ask her out without looking like a jerk. I'll just phone her and see where it goes from there."
My hands balled into fists and I almost took a swing at my friend.
"Don't joke around, Ash." Calum snapped. "Don't kick him while he's down."
"He's moping. And I'm done with it."
I glared at all 3 of them. "I
"I'm not moping. Or blubbering. Or anything. I'm fine."
"Sure you are, poor sad guitar man." Michael said. "You can either talk to Clara or get over yourself."
"I've got nothing to say to her." Then I pointed at Ashton. "And you should leave her alone!"
"Who's leaving who alone?"
We all turned so see who the voice belonged to.
"Oh Nicole, what's up?" Michael grinned as she walked inside with us. Now all 4 of them were looking down at me.
"Ehh. Not much." She shrugged.
"We have a question for you." Ashton said. "Do you think Luke misses Clara?"
She nodded quickly even before I even got the chance to glare at all of them.
I scoffed. "I do not miss her."
"You can keep denying but you know we're right." Calum replied.
This is getting old. Finally, I stood up. "Can we please stop it with the tribunals and the support groups? I'm fine. Clara chose to get out of our lives and that's fine. Now if we're done here, I have to call my mum."
Then I walked past them, leaving my guitar behind.
"Nice. That's real mature, Luke. You're gonna go crying home to your mum. You can't just keep walking away." I heard Michael cry out to me and a few snickers from the others. But I ignored them since I'm not exactly sure if he'd wrong.
When I got back to my hotel room, I really did call my mum. So I dialed her number and waited for her to answer.
"Hey, Luke, sweetheart. Is everything alright?" Mum said as soon as she got my call.
"Everything's fine, mum. I just wanted to see how things are back home." I mumbled.
"Oh, you know, the usual. We miss you, darling."
"Yeah." I sighed. "Me too."
A pause.
Then she spoke. "Are you alright?"
Now, she's gonna talk to me about Clara, too? For the last time, I repeated the phrase that I've been repeating for the last 2 months.
"I'm fi-"
"Don't lie to me, Luke. I can always tell when you're lying. Even on the phone." Despite myself, I grinned adoringly at my mother's tone. She's awesome.
"Is this about Clara?" she asked.
Damn. She really does know everything.
I sighed. Might as well be honest with myself. I mumbled a silent, "Yes."
Mum exhaled deeply and said, "Oh honey. It's been 2 months. You've got to talk to her. I don't like seeing you sad. Even the boys told me."
"But mum, she's seemed really furious at me."
"She's a great girl. If you explain to her what happened, I'm sure she'll understand." Another pause. "I kind of knew something would happen between you two."
"What? Mum what do you mean?" I asked.
"During the time when you two were together, I observed. You've always been so awkward around girls, you know. But not when you're onstage, of course." She explained and I listened intently. "Clara brings out that fire in you."
"She pisses me off." I corrected her, remembering our first few weeks together as a fake couple. It was hell.
"Luke, you never really got this in your head yet. But that was your defense. You were obviously so attracted to her that you end up fighting so much. It's called sexual tension, honey."
"Mum!"
"What? I was a teenager, too! Your father and I used to fight a lot. And then we'd -"
"Okay, mum. Stop. I don't want to hear this."
"I'm just saying, sweetie. Clara brings out t-"
"'the fire in me." I got that." I replied. "I have to go, mum. I'll call you later."
"Alright. Tell the boys I said hello." She said, "Oh! I almost forgot! There's this fellow called Leo and he keeps calling my iPad. Do you know him?"
"Leo? That's Clara's friend." I replied. "She must've forgot to delete it before."
"Well, do you want it? Maybe you could talk to her friend first."
I thought about it for a moment and then nodded at myself.
"Yeah. I'll call him."
