Chapter 12: The right choice

Katrina Johnson

"What was he doing here so early Katrina?" Pablo asked me before taking a sip of his coffee.

They've been questioning me from the second Pablo came in. Why was he here? When did he show up? Why did he show up? What happened last night? A million questions I did not want to give answers to. It's true that I always told those two everything, but when it came to Mason lately I just hesitated. I didn't even understand what was really going on and how I was going to deal with it, so how was I going to explain it to them?

For the hundredth time, I huffed and got on my feet "Would you both stop with all the questions? Seriously it's bugging me! Nothing happened, he just showed up and he left that's all! End of story! And what the fuck is vibrating so much!"

I started looking around and found a phone between the cushions on my couch. I frowned not recognizing it. It rang again I stared at it for a second. Celine... Mason talked about Celine last night. She was his fiancé or something. A pang of jealousy wrapped around me like a suffocating fog and I found it hard to breathe. I threw the phone on the couch and grabbed my glass of water from the coffee table drinking it in one gulp.

Scarlett took Mason's phone and silenced it. She hesitated before asking me "Do you want me to give it back to him?"

I shrugged at first but then realized he was leaving today and he needed his phone. "No, I'll give it to him on my way to work." I snatched it from her and went to get ready not putting much thought into my outfit pulling on the first skirt suit I could reach. I wasn't really in the mood to dress up or doll up but I felt like straightening my hair. Once ready, I made my way out unnoticed not wanting to be interrogated again by Sherlock and his assistant.

-Hi Nora, It's Katrina Johnson, please would you tell Mr. Williams that I'll be a little late?

-Hi Katrina, yes, of course, nothing bad I hope?

-No, No, everything is fine it's a family matter.

I walked into The Walton's feeling all nervous. Celine kept calling every two minutes. I wondered why she would call if they were broken up? Maybe he was drunk last night because of her and not me? So many thoughts ran through my mind as I walked out of the elevator on his floor. Finally finding his suite, I stood in front of it for a few minutes, rethinking my coming here. Maybe I should just leave it at the reception desk? But that would be rude, won't it? I lifted my hand to knock but dropped it with a sigh. What if he's with someone? I could hear faint talking but couldn't make out the words or the voices.

It took all I had to muster the courage and knock on his door.

The door opened revealing a very surprised Mason. He said nothing, just kept staring at me. This was a bad idea, I shouldn't have come here. I wished I took up Scarlett on that offer and let her bring him his phone instead of me.

"Mason, hi!" I blurted with a small wave.

Mason smiled showing his dimples as he let me in "Hi Katrina, this is Rita Roberts. Rita, this is Katrina Johnson."

I wasn't surprised to find her here. She was with him last night after all. But I was getting a feeling that Mason was a huge playboy with all these women in his life.

"Nice meeting you Katrina," Rita offered her hand which Kat shook with a smile.

"Likewise Rita." Rita, he also spoke about her last night. "So this is the future Mrs. Walton?"

Rita laughed shaking her head and casually taking a sip of her drink while Mason looks confused "What?"

"Last night, you told me she was the future Mrs. Walton."

"Oh, so that's where you were last night, you sneaky bastard" Rita punched Mason's arm playfully and looked at me "I'm afraid it is a dream that won't ever come true" She chuckled confusing me even more.

Is she joking? Does she really have feelings for Mason?

"Unfortunately, we're just friends and that's not about to change. He's all yours."

I looked around panicking, what did she mean? He can't be mine! "Me? Oh no, I have a boyfriend." I lied again knowing well that Mason didn't believe me. "I just came here to return your phone Mason, I found it on my couch. Elsa called, Rita too" She smiled at Rita "and um... Celine I think... yeah Celine called." I noticed the change in Mason's features and wished I kept my mouth shut. He was struggling to act normal but I knew he wasn't okay.

"Thank you Kat," He said casually taking it from me with a smile.

"Where did you park the car?" He asked Rita, "Not now, where did you park it?"

I took a step back giving them some space. I did what I came for, it was time I left.

"I gave it to the valet and told him it was yours."

We got into the elevator and I felt Mason's hand brush mine. I didn't dare look at him knowing my cheeks were flaming red. I listened to him and Rita talking and the idea of him coming back next week excited me for some reason and I had to be stupid and ask him if he really was coming back! What an idiotic move on my part!

Just as we walked out we met his dad. A very intimidating and handsome man. Mason didn't really look like his dad but anyone could tell they were related. Were they all this gorgeous in their family? From the little exchange they had in front of me I could tell they weren't on good terms, and it pained me. For me, the family was everything, the most important thing in life.

"Your dad is so intimidating," I said realizing Mason was holding my hand in his. I relaxed but didn't let go of his hand not ready to pull up my walls again.

"Mr. Walton?" Elsa joined us in the lobby seeming stressed.

"Good morning."

"Good morning Elsa, ready to go?"

I looked at Elsa and saw her eying our hands making me let go reluctantly, not wanting her to get the wrong idea. I already knew she liked her boss, and she hated me enough for some reason, I wasn't going to add fuel to it.

"Have a safe flight" I told Mason before turning my attention to Rita "It was nice meeting you, Rita."

"You too, we should get together sometime. I'll take your number from Mason later." I smiled at her nodding, I really liked her, and she seemed like the kind of person I could get along with.

Rita hugged Mason "Have a safe flight buddy, and let us see you more often."

"Thank you, Rita, yeah I sure will."

Mason leaned down closer to me, his mouth on my ear "I had fun with you kitty kat, hope to see you soon." He kissed my cheek gently making my heart stop and my breath hitch. What was he doing? Why was he being so flirty when I told him countless times that I was in a relationship! Well scratch that, I knew he didn't really believe that... I hailed a cab while calling the office letting them know I was on my way.

Thankfully I got to the office before Mr. Williams did and took place behind my desk organizing it a little. Last night I left in a hurry and papers were stacked in the wrong places, my pens were scattered and the mail was disregarded over one of the books I was reading. I put everything in place and followed Mr. Williams inside with his itinerary.

Back at my desk, I kept fidgeting restlessly tapping my fingers on the hard mahogany wood. I had a lot of work to do and a meeting to set but I was so distracted unable to focus. My mind kept on wandering to a certain well-built handsome human being. Someone I couldn't have... someone who obviously wanted me, and I wanted him but it just wasn't meant to be. As much as I liked him, I wasn't going to put my heart out and get hurt again. That was out of the question.

I kept thinking about what he said to me last night, that he wasn't enough. How could he think that? Or let anyone make him think that? Didn't he know how amazing he was? If it wasn't for our differences I would totally let him in.

I couldn't take it anymore and decided to text him.

KJ: Hope you have a safe flight. Let me know when you land.

KJ: Don't let anyone bother you, or make you doubt yourself, Mason.

MW: We're about to take off in a few minutes. I'll call you when I get there.

I hope he does, I miss his voice already.

MW: What are you talking about Kitty Kat?

And that nickname again, saying he was driving me crazy was an understatement. He was making it hard for me to push him away. I decided to tease him tell him the stupid joke he told me last night while drunk.

KJ: What do Alexander The Great and Winnie The Pooh have in common?

MW: You're not making sense Kat.

Of course, I'm not! So he didn't remember anything... great. I rolled my eyes typing away.

KJ: You didn't either when you came over drunk. You said a lot of things, Mason.

MW: have I hurt you in any way?

KJ: No, but it hurt me to know you are doubting yourself because of some woman.

I regretted saying that but it was too late. I waited for his reply but got nothing... Good job Katrina, you ruined everything. But maybe it was for the best... I knew it since kindergarten when we were playing together. He probably didn't even remember we used to be friends and there was nothing I could do about that since it was my fault as well. I pushed him away when we were kids to the point when he saved me from Gregory at the library, he thought it was the first time he met me. It pained me a lot at the time, but I knew I led us to that point of being total strangers.

I still believed I made the right choice by staying away from him but I just didn't know how to push him away anymore. I didn't know if I wanted to do that anymore.
