Chapter 8
I sit on my bed, having changed into a pair of leggings and a comfy red top. I had been just about ready to throw the dress I had been wearing out the window. I'm scrolling through my photos when Jem walks into my room. He stands awkwardly at the door, until I notice him.
"Oh, hey Jem." I say, pulling my earphones out of my phone and turning the music off. "What's up?"
"I...I thought maybe we should talk about what happened earlier." He says quietly, and I freeze up. I guess it shows on my face because Jem shakes his head. "Or, maybe, we could talk about something else..." He says. It's so awkward between Jem and I whenever we are around each other. I wish I could fix it. Jem stands by the wall, looking around. There's a strange silence in between is that makes me nervous. Then I get an idea. Maybe not the best idea in the history of ideas, but it is certainly interesting. I grab my phone and scroll through my songs until I find what I am looking for. I walk over to the window as the music fills the room. I've done what I always do when I'm nervous. Do something completely crazy and insane to forget the awkwardness.
"I know that we are young. And I know that you may love me." I sing along, holding onto the thick, velvet window curtains as if they are my lifeline. "But I just can't be with you like this anymore." I gasp dramatically and spin around. "Alejandro." I purr, a mischievous smile spreading across my face.
"I...uh...um...what?" Jem manages to say, his eloquence momentarily gone. He's blushing madly. I laugh. I move to music, swaying and spinning.
"She's got both hands in her pockets. And she won't look at you, won't look at you." I point and Jem and sashay closer. "She hides true love. En su bolsillo. She's got a halo around her finger around you." I throw my hands up into the air. "You know that I love you boy." I stalk toward Jem, whose face is now a deep shade of red. "Hot like Mexico, rejoice." I press both of my hands to his chest, and look up at him, a troublesome gleam in my eye. "At this point I've gotta choose, nothing to loose." I put his left hand around my waist, place my hand on his shoulder, and clasp our other hands together. "Don't call my name, don't call my name. Alejandro." I guide Jem in my own version of the tango. He follows surprisingly well. "I'm not your babe, I'm not your babe. Fernando." He dips me, and laughs. "Don't wanna kiss. Don't wanna touch. Just smoke my cigarette, hush." I press my finger to his lips playfully. "Don't call my name. Don't call my name. Roberto." Jem seems to be genuinely enjoying himself by now. "Alejandro, Alejandro. Ale-Alejandro, Ale-Alejandro." He spins me and I giggle. "Alejandro, Alejandro. Ale-Alejandro, Ale-Alejandro." We move in sync with each other and the music. "Stop. Please, just let me go." I spin away from him, and toss my head over my shoulder. "Alejandro. Just let me go." I fan myself with my hand, and shoot Jem a sassy smile. His eyes shine as they always do, but now, they shine with fire instead of soft moonlight. "She's not broken. She's just a baby." I move back toward Jem, putting an innocent look on my face. "But her boyfriend's like a dad, just like a dad." I twirl into Jem. "And all those flames that burned before him." Jem laughs as I pull him to the center of the room. "Now he's gotta firefight, gotta cool the bad." I dance away from him, and he watches me, an amused expression on his face. "You know that I love you boy." I move closer, so that I'm standing behind him. "Hot like Mexico, rejoice." I place my hands on his shoulders and whisper in his ear. "At this point I've gotta choose, nothing to loose" I draw my finger along his jawline and move so that I'm standing in front of him. "Don't call my name, don't call my name. Alejandro." He pulls him close and we dance, this time, with him leading me. It's much more graceful. "I'm not your babe, I'm not your babe. Fernando." I sway my hips, moving to the music with a lot of sass. Jem laughs. "Don't wanna kiss. Don't wanna touch. Just smoke my cigarette, hush." Jem brushes his lips against mine, but doesn't kiss me. "Don't call my name. Don't call my name. Roberto." I lift my arms up in the air and spin. "Alejandro, Alejandro. Ale-Alejandro, Ale-Alejandro." I let myself fall to the side, and Jem catches me. "Alejandro, Alejandro. Ale-Alejandro, Ale-Alejandro." I laugh and he spins me up. I pull him close. "Alejandro, Alejandro. Ale-Alejandro, Ale-Alejandro." I move away from him and fall onto the bed dramactically. "Don't bother me, don't bother me. Al-e-jan-dro." I sit up, clutching the bed post at the end of my bed. "Don't call my name. Don't call my name. Bye Fernando." I stand, leaning against the wood. I can feel the smirk on my face. "I'm not your babe. I'm not your babe. Al-e-jan-dro" I push myself away from the bedpost and twirl to the middle of the bed. "Don't wanna kiss, don't wanna touch. Fernando" I run my finger across the canopy, gazing up at it. "Don't call my name, don't call my name. Alejandro. I'm not your babe, I'm not your babe. Fernando." I spin around and stare at Jem, who has a smile on his face. "Don't wanna kiss. Don't wanna touch. Just smoke my cigarette, hush." Jem walks over and I place my hands on his shoulders. "Don't call my name, don't call my name. Roberto." He moves his hands so that they are on my waist. "Alejandro, Alejandro." I jump and Jem lifts me up into the air and sets me down gently. "Ale-Alejandro, Ale-Alejandro." We continue my unorganized tango dance. "Alejandro, Alejandro. Ale-Alejandro, Ale-Alejandro." We laugh and spin, losing ourselves in the music and each other. "Don't call my name Alejandro, Don't call my name Alejandro, Alejandro. I'm not your babe, I'm not your babe. Ale-Alejandro Ale-Alejandro. Fernando. Don't wanna kiss, Alejandro. Don't wanna touch, Alejandro. Just smoke my cigarette and hush. Don't call my name, don't call my name. Ale-Alejandro, Ale-Alejandro. Roberto. Alejandro." Jem dips me, and the music ends. I stare into his beautiful eyes, then lean in. Our lips barely touch before slow, dramatic claps fill the room. Jem nearly drops me.
"Will?" Jem says, and I look over his shoulder. Sure enough, a very amused Will Herondale is standing in the door.
"Uh, hey Will." I say, as I Jem awkwardly helps me up. "Um...how long have you been standing there?" I ask, biting my lip.
"Long enough to have nightmares for the rest of my life." He laughs and walks away, leaving Jem and I staring at each other.
"I guess I'd better get to my room." He says, breaking the silence.
"Oh, yeah." I say and he walks to the door. I follow, and lean against the door. Jem is almost out the door when he turns and kisses me. I lean in, kissing him back. He pulls away and I feel my heart racing.
"Goodnight Aurelia." He whispers to me.
"Goodnight Jem." He walks down the hall and I move to close the door. Right before it shuts, Jem turns to look at me, and I feel a smile spread across my face. I close the door, take a deep breath and smile like an idiot.
A/N: My best friend came up with this idea and I found it hysterical. We wrote this scene together, and I must admit, I had way more fun than I should have!
