Chapter 22
A/N: I understand that this is not how the book goes, but before you come at me with your seraph blades and ducks (bloodthirsty little beasts...) do remember that this is a fanfiction and not the actual story. I also wanted to thank you guys for all the reads, votes and comments! You guys are the best!
I stare up at Consul Penhallow, my bow held tightly in my hands. It is twilight, and all the lights in the Shadowhunter city had begun to glow. Witchlight shines from every window, from the edges of Angel Square, from the hospital. I turn as blue light flashes behind me. The demon towers are glaring blue, and the lights cast a blue shade over Alicante. Nephilim move into the streets, looking up at their Consul. Jem stands next to me, and we listen to The Consul's words.
"Nephilim," She calls down to the crowd. "Children of the Angel, warriors, tonight we ready ourselves, for tonight Sebastian Morgenstern will bring his forces against us." The Consul pauses as another wave of icy wind sweeps through the square. In the silence I can hear it whispering. "Sebastian Morgenstern is trying to destroy what we are. He will bring against us warriors who wear our own faces but are not Nephilim. We cannot hesitate. When we face them, when we look at an Endarkened, we cannot see brother or mother or sister or wife, but a creature in torment. A human from whom all humanity has been stripped." As she speaks, my eyes flicker over to Jem. As I do, I feel something stir in my heart. Pictures of my family, of my father and my mother, of Missy and Jacob. How dare Sebastian think of hurting them? "We are what we are because our will is free: We are free to choose. We choose to stand and fight. We choose to defeat Sebastian's forces. They have darkness; we have the strength of the Angel. Fire tests gold. In this fire, we will be tested, and we will shine out. You know the protocol; you know what to do. Go forth, children of the Angel." Her voice rings out, and her eyes sweep over the crowd of warriors assembled beneath her. "Go forth and light the lights of war." And with that a wailing siren splits the air, and I spin around as the demon towers flash red and gold. Shadowhunters hurry in different directions, arming themselves heavily. The sea of bodies flow around me, almost separating Jem and I. But he grabs my hand and pulls me off to the side.
"The Accords Hall," Jem yells over the crowd. "You have to get inside there. You'll be safe." He says, and I narrow my eyes.
"I will not go. I will stay and fight with you." I say firmly, my gray-blue eyes reflecting the red and gold light. "Sebastian wishes to take over the mundane world. My world. I will not sit by and watch as Sebastian tries to rule it. If the Nephilim will fight, I will stand beside them. And I will fight until the end." I stare at him, my fierce gaze unwavering. He closes his eyes and nods.
"I would expect nothing less from you." He says sadly, and his dark brown eyes look up at me. "I suppose I cannot stop you." Jem sighs and I step forward and place my hand on his cheek gently.
"No. But you can fight by my side." I answer softly and he nods, determination flooding his eyes. Suddenly I hear a cry from behind me. I spin around, notching an arrow in my bow faster than I thought I could. The Blackthorn children, Julian, Tiberius, Livia, Drusilla and Octavian, Helen Blackthorn and Emma Carstairs are standing in the street, and Endarkened are surging towards them. Helen and Emma are trying to defend the younger ones, but there's so many Endarkened. I fire my bow, hiring one of the Endarkened in the back. It falls to the ground, and I run forward, shooting another arrow. I duck as a knife flies past me, and jump over a dead Endarkened. Two disks shoot past me, and bury themselves in the throat of the Dark Nephilim. I spin around and see Jem behind me, his eyes flashing. In the red light of the demon towers, he seemed to glow. A tall, thin figure in black Shadowhunter gear, against the darker black of the night. My Jem. I run towards the Blackthorn children, as Jem kills the remaining Endarkened. "Go!" I shout, hurrying the children along. Helen stares at me in amazement, probably wondering why a mundane can fight. The children also stare at me for a minute, their large eyes blinking up at me. I heard them forward, and they run. I make sure the children keep moving, and kill any Endarkened that I see. My soul screams every time one of them crumples to the ground, and I have to keep reminding myself that these things aren't human. I spin around at one point, looking for Jem. He is right behind me, and our eyes meet. I nod at him, and turn back around. The closer we move towards the Accords Hall, the thicker the crowd gets. Nephilim and Endarkened and Fae warriors surrounded us, and I have to shoot my bow quickly. The Faeries are moving oddly slow and clumsily, and fall beneath the blades of the Shadowhunters. The Endarkened, though, move steadily, slashing their own blades at the Nephilim. Julian has the baby zipped in his jacket, and the small boy's screams mix with the shrieks of the battle.
"We have to stop!" Julian shouts over the fighting. "We're going to get separated!" He cries. Helen stops everyone. She looks pale and ill; I suppose whatever is affecting the Faeries is affecting her as well. Jem and I move the children into a line, making sure they're all holding onto someone. Drusilla clings to my jacket, looking up at me, her eyes shining with fear. I gently unclasp her hand, and move her towards Tiberius.
"Hold his hand." I say softly, and she nods, reaching for her brother's hand. Tiberius takes it, while scowling at her. And, soon, everyone's moving again, holding each other tightly. Jem and I move to the front, clearing a path through the Endarkened warriors. Helen stays at the back, making sure no one is left behind. I felt an Endarkned grab my leg, and pull an arrow out of my quiver, stabbing him with it. I pierce his skin repeatedly, trying my best not to scream as I do so. I don't want to scare the children, but as his fingers let go of my leg, I stumble back, staring in horror at what I have done. Jem has his hand on my cheek in no time.
"Aurelia we have to go. We have to keep moving. Ok? Listen to me, darling." He says, our eyes lock together. I nod, thinking about the Blackthorn children. And we continue to move, until we reach the Accords Hall. There's a guard on either side of the door.
"We're about to shut the doors." The man on the right says. "You two are going to have to stay out here." He looks at Jem and Helen. Then he turns to me. "The Consul said you can come inside."
"I am going to fight." I say, my voice full of ferocity. The guard looks at me disbelievingly, and I glare at him. The Blackthorn children gather around Helen, except Julian, who stands back with Emma Carstairs.
"It's alright." Helen says, in a choked voice. "This is the safest place in Alicante. Look, there's salt and grave dirt all up and down the steps to keep the Faeries out." Jem walks over to Emma and kneels down by her.
"Emma Cordelia Carstairs," He says, and I can barely hear him over the roar of the battle. He looks both young and old at the same time. He appears to be no older than twenty, but behind his dark eyes there is so much wisdom. "Stay with your parabatai," Jem says, and I assume he is talking about Julian. Emma and him appear to be very close. "Sometimes it is braver not to fight. Protect them, and save your vengeance for another day." Emma's eyes widen and she asks him something I cannot hear. Suddenly, the guard who had spoken to us falls to the ground, a red arrow sticking out of his chest.
"Get inside!" I shout, and grab Drusilla in my arms. I feel Livia holding on to me, and practically throw the young girls inside the hall. I stumble back as they look up at me, and the large doors slam shut. Once I make sure the rest of the children are safely inside, and I spin around to face the Endarkened warriors. I throw myself into the battle, pulling out the two swords that had rested in my belt. I slash at the Dark Nephilim, watching them fall next to me. I no longer feel a tug at my heart when they fall, only bitter contempt. Then, Jem's voice rings out, making me look around.
"Tessa!" His voice is so clear, and after a few seconds of searching, my gaze lands a young lady with dark hair who is standing only a few feet away from me. She's wearing dark robes, and she looks up as Jem calls her name. She stops fighting when she sees him, shock in her eyes. Unfortunately, this is all one Endarkened needs. He notches his bow, aiming at Tessa. I reach back to my quiver, but all my arrows are gone. The only thing is stands between Tessa and that arrow is me. I pause for a second. Jem loves Tessa. And I love Jem. With another thought, I throw myself forward, and feel the arrow piece my skin. I can't bring myself to open my mouth, and my screams echo around my mind. I fall to the cold, stone ground, and the last thing I am aware of before the darkness falls over me is Jem screaming my name.
