{8} Lightning and Blonds Don't Mix

***

Not long after they received the message, they got Ranpo on the phone. They stayed at the coffee shop for a little longer so they could listen to Ranpo's deductions. The most important conclusion he ended up coming to was about the bomb. From what he said, the bomb was left in a fishing tackle store in Negishi. With that information now in their minds, the group of detectives got in a car and started making their way to the tackle store.

It was a little confusing in Hiromi's mind. Why would the perpetrator leave the bomb in such an obscure and random place? There had to be more to it than she was thinking. Ranpo was definitely on to something, she just hadn't figured it out. Thankfully, she wasn't the only one with that question. Atsushi ended up asking a similar question, "Why does he think the bomb is at a fishing tackle store?"

The question was directed to whoever would answer. The one to speak up was Dazai, though he only responded with another question, "Where's a map?" He raised his chin off the hand he was resting his head on. He opened his eyes and looked at Kunikida for a response.

"Behind the driver's seat," Kunikida responded. That was all that needed to be said for Atsushi to reach for the map. Like Kunikida said, the map ended up being behind his seat. Kunikida was the one driving while Dazai sat in the passenger seat. That left Hiromi and Atsushi to sit in the back.

"Look on page 97," Dazai instructed.

As soon as he had the map in his possession, Atsushi started skimming through the map to find the mentioned page. Hiromi leaned over a little to get a look at what he was seeing. "97," Atsushi mumbled to himself. "Okay, looking... Looking..."

Pages flipped and flipped and then finally the page they were looking for caught Hiromi's eyes. Atsushi didn't seem to see it and kept turning pages. Hiromi cut him off, "Wait, you missed it!" She started flipping the pages backward until they ended up on the correct page, "There!"

The first thing that Hiromi noticed when she found the fishing tackle store is the answer to the question that she and Atsushi had been asking themselves. Dazai decided to explain it a little more since Kunikida couldn't see the map as he was driving, "The terrorist's target is the petrochemical complex."

"Of course!" Kunikida exclaimed. "I don't know why I didn't think of that."

"Yokohama is known for being one of Japan's major port towns. Next to the shipping docks on the waterfront, there are many large facilities that store oil and gas," Dazai stated. Oh... Hiromi could already see where he was going with that. It was going to be terrible if they didn't find the bomb and somehow stop it. "If an explosion were to occur close enough to ignite the storage tanks, the entire port would be engulfed in flames."

Leaning back in her seat and crossing her legs, Hiromi's eyes lingered on the building that was on the map, "He wants to cause the most destruction he can so this was the perfect place." Perfect for him and horrifying for everyone else.

Still, Dazai had more to say about the situation, "Infiltrating a fuel storage facility would be hard. They're all protected by extremely tight security," He glanced back at Hiromi and Atsushi. Atsushi had already put the map back where it belonged by this point. "But there could be one other way... A terrorist could put a bomb in a car and leave the vehicle near one of the storage tanks when it's full."

"Considering the effective range of a bomb that can be put into a car," Kunikida cut in. "That fishing tackle store's parking lot is the perfect place to leave the explosive."

Hiromi nodded to herself, "The car doesn't draw that much attention. No one would think to question a random car in a parking lot." The only time you would question a car in a parking lot would be when it's a really shady car. If this guy knew his stuff then he would choose the most basic car he could find.

"Bingo," Dazai spoke with amusement. Just then, Dazai's phone pinged. He looked over the notification and shut his phone off, closing his eyes. Hiromi knew that she was going to dread hearing whatever he had to say. "The military's bomb squad has found the device," Okay, that's definitely good. "But there's still a problem. It's connected to a motion-sensing timer," And that ruined everything. "They don't think they'll be able to disarm it before sundown."

"Are you serious?" Hiromi leaned forward with a deadpanned look.

In as much seriousness as her, Dazai responded, "Deadly. They've started evacuating nearby residents, but they're not sure there's enough time."

"Oh, no..." Atsushi trailed off.

"There's still hope," Dazai told the group. Hiromi raised an eyebrow, giving him a look of skepticism. What could this 'hope' that he talked about be? Things were looking a little bad at the moment. "They said we can deactivate the bomb if we can transmit a remote stop signal to it."

At this point, Kunikida was sweating from the stress, "But how do we do that?" That was the exact question Hiromi was ask-

All thoughts that Hiromi had were cut off. Out of nowhere, Kunikida gasped and slammed on the brakes. The car slid sideways and then to a stop. Hiromi ended up slamming into Atsushi's side which made Atsushi's face hit the window beside him. Hiromi let out a groan as her side started to hurt from where Atsushi accidentally elbowed her. She glared at Kunikida, "Could you have done that any gentler, Kunikida?!" No response was given to her. The only thing he did was look over at them with his eyes wide.

"W-What's going on?!" Atsushi inquired.

Suddenly, Kunikida took out his phone and opened it, "I got a call."

While Atsushi responded with a simple, 'Oh...', Hiromi felt like she was going to reach over and strangle Kunikida, "Atsushi and I almost got thrown out of the car for a call?" What if the car doors hadn't been closed properly? The two of them slamming into it could have caused it to open and they would have fallen out into the oncoming traffic. It was a near-death experience waiting to happen.

Cars started honking at them. That's when Hiromi realized that Kunikida had stopped in the middle of the road. He could have pulled off to the side somewhere, but no. He wanted to stop right in the middle of the lane. If Kunikida knew then he clearly didn't care. He just answered the call that he received, "Yes, hello?"

It wasn't long until Atsushi noticed the cars behind them, "Hey, guys. I think we're causing a bit of a traffic jam."

"And they do not look happy," Hiromi added.

At that moment, Atsushi and Dazai both got a call as well. Atsushi had received a call from Ranpo while Dazai had received a phone call from the President. Hiromi waited to receive a call herself, but none came in. She tried to see if she could hear what the others were saying though it was a lost cause. All of them were speaking all at once and it was hard to hear any of what they were saying. At that point, Hiromi gave up.

Ironically, they all ended up getting off their calls at the same time. It was one of those coincidences that you would only really see in a movie or anything like that. It was weird to see it happen in real life. Kunikida went back to driving, "I got a call from Rokuzou... Someone recently ordered a bomb transmitter, plus other equipment, delivered to a former defense facility."

"Ranpo reached a similar conclusion," Atsushi said.

"That settles it..." Kunikida trailed off.

"And I just got a call from the President," Dazai added. Kunikida seemed to become more focused at the mention of the caller Dazai spoke with. "He was informed by the military, the taxi driver's dead."

That information made Hiromi's eyes widen. She leaned forward, pushing Atsushi to the side so that she was in the middle of Kunikida and Dazai. She wanted to hear this conversation. She knew that someone was going to be after the taxi driver. What she didn't expect was that they would be able to get past the security that had been put in place for him.

Kunikda also seemed surprised, "He's dead?"

"How can that be?" Atsushi asked. "I thought they were holding him in their isolation ward for extra protection."

They were. "They were," Dazai seemed to read Hiromi's thoughts. "But he died after suddenly collapsing in his cell. The forensic team hasn't determined the cause of death, but the guards noticed the numbers '00' on his palm." Numbers on his palm? It had to be linked to his death. Maybe...

"There were numbers on his hand?" Kunikida also wondered. "How strange. What in the world is going on?"

Since no one seemed to say anything about it yet, Hiromi decided to include her thoughts, "It's possible that it could be an ability," It had to be. Though, she didn't want to sound completely sure. There always had to be room for a little bit of doubt in your theories. You can be right most of the time and still end up being wrong once. "Clearly, it's one where you don't have to be near the person to activate it."

It didn't take long for them to reach their destination. It was a former defense force facility that they ended up needing to go to. There were only 20 minutes left until the bomb goes off. To say that the situation was tense was an understatement. Kunikida drove the car right into the facility. It was surprising when the car was met with grenades when it drove inside.

This immediately made Dazai call out, "We've got company!"

The grenades went off around the car. Kunikida maneuvered the car to where they wouldn't get injured from the brute force of the explosions. Kunikida slid the car to a stop and Hiromi moved her hair out of her face. It had gotten into her line of vision whenever the car was being thrown around. She let out a huff, "Yeah, I think we noticed."

With not much time left to talk, they quickly got out of the car and hid behind it. They were now met with men firing guns at them. Kunikida was the first one to do anything about it, "Doppo Poet" He ripped out the piece of paper that he had written on from his notebook, "Flash Bang!" A green light engulfed the paper and it turned into a flashbang. He threw it over at the shooters and a bright light filled the room. "Well, at least now we know we're at the right place!" He turned his attention to Dazai, Hiromi, and Atsushi, "You three head upstairs! Find the transmitter, and send the stop signal to the car bomb!"

The three nodded and ran off to do as he said while he stayed behind to deal with the shooters. It's a good thing that Hiromi was in good shape because if she wasn't then the stairs they had to go up would have taken her out. They ran to the nearest door, Dazai and Hiromi heading toward it while Atsushi stopped to take a look outside the big wall of windows.

It was at this point in the day that the sun started to go down. "Not much time left!" Atsushi had said what they were probably all thinking.

After Dazai threw the door open, they all run inside. The first thing that Hiromi saw when she entered the room was a panel. The panel had so many buttons and levers that it was overwhelming. The panel had a screen above it with a countdown timer. It appeared that they only had fifteen minutes left. Dazai panted from all the running while Atsushi stood behind him. Hiromi studied the panel in front of her with wide eyes, "This is a lot. It doesn't even have any labels either."

"Can either of you figure it out?" Atsushi questioned.

"Fortunately, yes" Well, at least one of them could. Hiromi didn't know anything about this. Dazai suddenly closed his eyes in disappointment, "But I still can't send the signal," A noise of question came from Atsushi while Hiromi looked at the dark-haired man. Dazai pointed at the red keyhole. "You have to insert a release key here to access the controls," Dazai half-shrugged, "And I have no idea where to get it."

A sigh escaped Hiromi as she ran a hand through her hair, "Someone must have it on them," She stared at the panel with narrowed eyes, "That or it's hidden somewhere. It would take forever to find it in either case." The bomber was definitely not going to make this easy for them, huh? It made sense. He was trying to ruin the agency after all. He needed them to fail and he was doing everything he could to make sure that they would fail.

"What are we going to do?!" Atsushi was clearly panicking.

The sound of the door opening caught Hiromi's attention, "What are you doing here?"

Turning, Hiromi saw a giant of a man who had walked into the room. Atsushi let out a yelp at the sudden sound and turned in the direction of the man as well. Dazai positioned his body to face him, "Oh!" Dazai smirked, "Looks like someone's been hitting the weight room," Dazai hit the giant in the stomach. The giant still stood strong, not even reacting to the hit. The giant grabbed Dazai by the neck and lifted him. Atsushi, who had suddenly found a foldable chair, hit the giant over the head to try and help Dazai. Of course, this didn't do anything either. The giant only turned to him and kicked Atsushi, making him go flying back into the wall, almost hitting Hiromi. "Nice leg work!" Dazai glanced behind him and at a certain green-haired girl, "Hiromi, a little help here?"

A look was shot at him by Hiromi, "I can't! It's too cramped in here, I could accidentally hurt you guys or fry the machines," She could send him flying with the wind but she doubted that he would even be fazed by it. Anything she could do would get the others hurt also. The giant grabbed Dazai again by the face and sent him flying into the other wall. Hiromi flinched as Dazai knocked some stuff off the wall from the impact, falling to the floor right after. Hiromi's eyes widened at the wall, which had broken from Dazai's impact, "And there's no way I can take down that guy with strength alone."

"You really do have very strong arms," Dazai commented as he stood back up. Blood was on one side of his mouth. Somehow, looking like he was in terrible pain, he still smiled, "You missed your true calling as a luggage porter," Dazai was thrown once again by the giant, but this time he was thrown into the window in front of the panel of buttons and levers. Hiromi tried to think of something, but nothing was coming to mind. The giant walked over to Dazai and grabbed him by the neck. Dazai seemed to glance at something outside of the window though Hiromi couldn't really see what. She got an idea when Dazai shouted, "Hey, Kunikida!"

A green glow came from the other side of the window along with a voice saying, "I'm already on it," No doubt about it, it was Kunikida. All of a sudden, Hiromi watched as the man bounced around with a grappling gun that he made. His opponent was shouting something at him. Hiromi didn't take the time to listen to him as Kunikida shot the gun through the window right when the giant went to punch Dazai. The window smashed completely, "Dazai!"

That was all the opportunity Dazai needed to kick off the giant and jump toward the first floor, "Here!"

The two had switched places. Kunikida was now facing off against the giant while Dazai was facing Kunikida's opponent. Kunikida turned his gaze to Hiromi who was still standing there, clueless, "Go help, Dazai. Your ability will be more useful there."

Nodding once, Hiromi jumped over the panel and out of the window, "Got it!"

As she was falling, she took a second to examine the enemy. It was a guy with blonde hair that stopped a little above his shoulders and he was wearing a jacket. A red circle was underneath Dazai and numbers swirled around in more circles inside the bigger circle. Hiromi made a cloud so that she could land safely and also not alert the guy that she was there. The blond seemed to be surprised when the circle disappeared, "What the-" He gritted his teeth. "Why hasn't a number marked your hand?!"

Looks like Hiromi was right about that being his ability. Dazai sent a small glance to Hiromi and she immediately got the message. As Dazai stepped toward the man, Hiromi closed her eyes and focused on her power. "Sorry to say, your ability won't have any effect on me," Dazai told the man. The sound of the footsteps stopped, "Oh, and also, you should tell your partner to take my career advice. Now, Hiromi!"

Shouting was definitely one way to signal her. Before the guy even knew what was going on, Hiromi opened her eyes, her hair floating around her. You could hear the sound of electricity as dark clouds formed above her opponent. He looked with shock as Hiromi yelled, "Strange Weather In Tokyo!"

Bolts of lightning came raining down on the man. Dazai jumped out of the way as one of them almost hit him. The blond wasn't as lucky. He was trucking by one of the bolts of lightning. His body shook rapidly, and his hair stood on end until finally, the attack stopped. By the end of it, he was covered in burns. He fell to the ground with his eyes wide open, but it was clear that he wasn't conscious.

Hiromi lowered herself to the ground. Dazai came up to her with a grin, "Nice work!" He ruffled her hair which caused her to push him off her. He shot a glance at the man once more, "But is he still alive?"

"Uh..," That was definitely a good question. "I think so. I don't think I used enough electricity to kill him." Hiromi didn't sound so sure. She did focus to make sure she didn't kill him. Whether or not it worked... Time will give them that answer.

With their opponent now finished, they headed back up to where Kunikida and Atsushi were. The first thing that Hiromi heard whenever she reached them was Kunikida saying, "There's a catch..," She looked to see that he was holding up his notebook to show Atsushi. "The object must be small, no bigger than this notebook here."

"So your notebook is really a tool," Atsushi concluded. Hiromi moved her eyes to look at the timer. It was stopped at two minutes and 58 seconds. A sigh of relief came from Hiromi. They managed to stop it. "And that's the reason," Kunikida opened up his notebook, "You have it with you all the time, isn't it?" There was complete silence from Kunikida.
