{14} Reporters Suck

***

There was one thing that Hiromi hated more than anything... Correction, one among many things that she hated more than anything. Could you guess what that was? If you said reporters and journalists then you would be correct. Hiromi hated them. They were good on some occasions, but they really only lived to slander people and blow things way out of proportion. They'll take any tip they get and never double-check the source or the tip. They would just take what they hear, write it down, and then add their own input. It was one of the most annoying things that Hiromi had ever faced.

The ADA had its fair share of reporters/journalists. For example, during the Azure Messenger fiasco, a newspaper wrote a slanderous column on how the ADA had let the victims die and didn't try to save them. They then went into a long rant about how the agency was filled with ability users so it was "no wonder why this kind of thing happened. They've been planning something behind the scenes, something horrifying." Like, come on, just say that you're bigoted and move on. Practically ratting themselves out.

One moment in particular stuck out to Hiromi when she thought about her hate for reporters/journalists. It was when she and Kenji had been on a case by themselves. It was a simple case. Just some gang going around, terrorizing a neighborhood. The two were told by the President to find out all the information they could about the gang and help the police arrest all of them. Of course, the gang was not going to go down without a fight so Hiromi and Kenji had gotten into a physical fight with the gang members.

Well, it turned out that a journalist had been looking into the gang as well and she had stumbled upon the gang's hideout when Hiromi and Kenji had been talking with the gang to go with them to the police to not make it harder for themselves. The journalist heard Kenji introduce the two of them as detectives from the Armed Detective Agency and she wrote a whole article about it. Basically saying that the agency was "using kids for their own nefarious purposes." She said that they were "being forced" to fight for the agency and all kinds of stuff like that. Of course, this was ridiculous and the President had to come out with an official statement saying that Hiromi and Kenji were not being forced by any means.

Now, you might be wondering, what brought about this random rant about reporters and journalists? Well, Hiromi woke up this morning and headed to school, only to be met with cameras and microphones at the front gate of UA. An annoyed sigh came from Hiromi as she eyed the group of people who basically harassed the students as they walked into the school, "Great. This is just the thing I need today." It was just then that Hiromi had gotten a text from Dazai saying to be careful because he heard that there were reporters and journalists at the school. A little late of a warning, huh?

Let's just get this over with then. Hiromi walked forward with her head hung low, trying to keep the people from seeing her face. As soon as she was making her way through the crowd, they all immediately turned to her with their microphones and cameras. They asked her about All Might being her teacher and a bunch of other irrelevant things. Hiromi never answered a single one of their questions, trying to act like they didn't even exist.

This didn't last long when a hand reached out and grabbed her arm, "Miss, please tell us- Wait a minute..." Hiromi froze upon hearing the voice. Damn! She was here! As if things couldn't get any worse! "Hey! You're that one girl from the Armed Detective Agency!" It was the same journalist who wrote the slanderous article about her and Kenji.

"Let go of me!" Hiromi exclaimed. She tried to pry her arm out of the grip of the journalist and had no luck. This woman sure had a tight grip, that's for sure. Hiromi was almost worried that she would cause a bruise.

The journalist's microphone was shoved into her face, "Is it true that you work with the agency of your own free will? That's what your president said, but I don't buy it for a single second," Hiromi continued to try and get away as more reporters and journalists crowded around her. It was starting to get claustrophobic and she tried to find any exit she could. "Hey, are you even listening? I asked if you were an ability user. And if you are then why are you going to UA?"

Almost like the universe decided to take pity on her, someone came to her rescue. "I ask that you stop harassing the students and leave. And you better cut that footage. It's illegal to film minors without their parent or guardian's permission." It was Aizawa. The reporters and journalists looked surprised at his sudden arrival. This surprise gave the teacher and student an opening to get away from the crowd and toward the school.

A sigh escaped Hiromi, "Thanks."

"No problem," Aizawa said simply. "I hate reporters," That makes two of them. The two headed straight for the classroom and were thankfully at a very far distance from the hysteric crowd outside. Hiromi sat down in her seat when they entered the classroom and Aizawa stood in front of the class, behind the podium. Everyone immediately quieted down as soon as Aizawa walked into the room. "Decent work on yesterday's combat training, you guys. I saw the video feeds and went over each of your team's results. Bakugou," Bakugou let out a "tch" at the sound of his name being called. "You're talented. So don't sulk like a child about your loss, okay?"

Avoiding eye contact, Bakugou looked like he hated being chastised like that, "Yeah, whatever."

"And Midoriya," Aizawa moved on. Midoriya averted his gaze to his desk, jumping at the sound of his name. Aizawa looked down at the papers in his hand, "I see the only way you won the match was by messing up your arm again. Work harder. And don't give me the excuse that you don't have control over your quirk. That line's already getting old. You can't keep breaking your body while training here. But your quirk will be really useful if you can get a handle on it," The sudden comment made Midoriya gasp. A smile appeared on the boy's face. "So show a little urgency, huh?"

A determined expression spread across his face, "Right."

Turning his attention to the rest of the class, Aizawa moved on, "Let's get down to business," Hiromi narrowed her eyes at the teacher. Was he only going to give feedback to them? Was he already picking favorites? Maybe he would talk with the others later and he just used them as an example? "Our first task will decide your future," Everyone stared with looks of anticipation and worry. It was obvious that they were worried about him pulling another expulsion stunt. They were lucky today, "You all need to pick a class representative."

Upon hearing this, everyone immediately relaxed. It didn't take long for people to jump up, saying that they wanted to be the class representative. Hiromi is not kidding when she said that almost everyone was volunteering for the role. Even Bakugou was! Hiromi on the other hand would rather not volunteer. She would not be the best class rep, seeing as she had a long period of time where she wasn't in school. She wasn't really sure how the system worked yet.

Eventually, someone spoke up above everyone else, "Silence, everyone, please!" Iida exclaimed. His sudden yell made everyone fall silent. They turned to him and listened to what he had to say on the matter. "The class representative's duty is to lead others. That's not something just anyone can do. You must first have the trust of every student in the classroom. Therefore, the most logical way to fill this position is democratically. We will hold an election to choose our leader!"

It didn't take long for them to notice that his hand was raised, volunteering himself, "It's pretty obvious you want us to vote for you." Almost everyone stated in unison.

"Is this really the best idea?" Kaminari questioned.

Asui spoke up with an even better question, "We've only known each other a few days, how do we know who we can trust?"

"Besides, everyone'll just vote for themselves," Kirishima added.

They were both right. The first part could be solved if they had everyone speak on their own character and why they wanted to be class rep. Of course, people would lie a little, but they would mostly be truthful. The second part would be something that would be almost impossible to solve. If Aizawa told everyone to vote for someone other than themselves then they would still do it. "It is kind of a flawed system," Hiromi stated. "You can't really help if people vote for themselves."

"Most people will," Iida agreed. "But that means whoever does receive multiple votes must truly be the most suitable person for the job," He turned to Aizawa. That's when Hiromi noticed their teacher zipping himself up in a sleeping bag, not even caring about what they were discussing. "It's the best way, right, sir?"

If his actions weren't enough to show just how much he couldn't care less, his words expressed even more, "Do what you want, just decide before my nap's over." Aizawa fell to the side and almost immediately shut his eyes to take a nap.

"Thank you for your trust!" Iida seemed to take his words as giving him full trust in the situation.

A look was shot at the boy by Hiromi, "It seems more like he doesn't care rather than trusting us." Nothing in the way he acted and spoke said anything about him trusting them in the slightest. He just wanted them to figure it out themselves so they would leave him alone. It was pretty obvious that's what he wanted.

And so the voting began. Hiromi ended up voting for Iida since it seemed like the best choice. He seemed like the type to keep everyone in line and he is probably one of the most hardworking people in the class. He would be exceptional as the class representative. Unfortunately, Iida wasn't elected as the class rep, it was Midoriya who won with three votes. Yaoyorozu was voted the class deputy with two votes.

The person who seemed most surprised by the outcome was Midoriya, "How did I get three votes?"

It didn't take long for Bakugou to rage over this. The spiky-haired boy jumped up out of his seat and looked at the board with murderous intent, "Okay, you idiots, who voted for him?"

"What," Sero spoke up. "Did you honestly think anyone was gonna vote for you?"

"What did you say?!" Bakugou immediately whirled around at him.

As Hiromi's eyes looked around the room, she saw Uraraka trying not to draw attention to herself, whistling absentmindedly. Well, there was one person who voted for Midoriya. While Hiromi looked at Uraraka, she noticed Iida's condition. The boy was practically shaking, "One vote... I feared this might happen, but I can't argue with the system I chose!"

"So you voted for someone else, huh?" Yaoyorozu asked.

"But you knew it was best to vote for yourself, right?" Sato also inquired. "What were you tryin' to prove here, Iida?"

Did they really not get it? It was so obvious that it might as well have been Ranpo on a sugar high. Hiromi glanced around the room and finally said, "I get it," The group all look at her, waiting for her to explain it to them. Did they seriously not get it? Like at all? Not even a hint? Wow... "It's integrity. He believed that we would all vote for people other than ourselves. Clearly, we proved him wrong."

The class moved on from complaining about the results and the positions were made final. Midoriya stood in front of the class with Yaoyorozu. Midoriya was shaking like a leaf the entire time. It looked like he would fall over by even the smallest gust of wind. Aizawa didn't seem to care all that much, "All right, the class rep is Midoriya, and our deputy is Yaoyorozu."

"Really?" Midoriya looked shocked. "Uh. It's not a mistake?"

"How'd this happen?" Yaoyorozu sighed.

"This might not be so bad," Asui said.

"Yeah," Kirishima agreed. "I can get behind Midoriya I guess."

"Yaoyorozu was totally on top of it when it came to our training results!" Kaminari exclaimed.

Class went on as normal after that. Or as normal as you could get if you forced yourself to ignore the murderous glare that Bakugou was giving Midoriya the whole time. Hiromi felt really bad for the boy, this situation clearly made him even more of a target for Bakugou. Lunch eventually came and Hiromi planned to sit somewhere remote where people wouldn't bother her after she got her food.

This plan didn't work out too well for her. Almost as soon as she got her food, the girl was dragged by Uraraka to sit at a table with her, Iida, and Midoriya. Hiromi knew that it would be impossible to get out of the situation so she accepted her fate. She set her lunch down, got comfortable, and started eating as Uraraka sighed, saying, "It's always so crowded in here!"

"That's because students in the support, management, and hero courses all share the same cafeteria," Iid explained.

That made sense. The lunch periods were also most likely separated by grade. So all of the first years would eat together and then the second years would come to eat and so on. Hiromi glanced around the lunch room for a moment and pointed out an observation she had made, "Seems like a lot of people usually keep to their own classes."

No one seemed to pay attention to her words. They were too busy stuffing their faces with the delicious food that was provided to them. Uraraka was eating her rice, humming in satisfaction at the taste, "This rice is delicious!"

Sighing, Midoriya had his mind on something else entirely, "Guys, I'm kinda worried about the class rep thing, I don't think I'm qualified."

"Sure you are," Uraraka told him.

"It's really about having confidence in yourself." Hiromi shrugged. You could even fake confidence and it would work. Fake confidence would eventually turn into real confidence. Fake it till you make it, she says! What do you think she had been doing for all of these years?

"You'll be great," Iida said. Midoriya hummed in question. "Your courage and quick thinking under stress will help you make a worthy leader. Not to mention the strength you've demonstrated. Those are the reasons I voted for you, at least."

"You were one of the three?" Midoriya inquired.

Uraraka directed her question to Iida, "Didn't you wanna be rep really badly, I mean you do look the part. 'Cause of the glasses!" Iida had clearly been very outspoken about not wanting people to vote for themselves. If he didn't want anyone to vote for themself then he wouldn't vote for himself. No matter how badly he wanted the position.

"That's not exactly how we should be choosing our rep," Midoriya informed the girl.

"Wanting a job and being suited to it are quite different things," Iida definitely had a point there. Just because you want something doesn't mean that it's going to work out. Hiromi wanted to be a famous singer as a child, and here she is now... A detective trying to become a hero. if she had told her younger self this then she probably would have found some way to beat her up so badly that Hiromi would be hurting for a while. That's how badly her younger self wanted to be a singer. "Observing the Iida family's hero agency has taught me that much."

"Agency?" Both Midoriya and Uraraka asked.

"Hold on," Midoriya did a double-take. "What does your family do?"

That was something that Hiromi didn't think about. Although she was particularly interested before, hearing him mention his family having a hero agency made her become more intrigued by the topic. Iida didn't seem to want to talk about it as he had tried to completely skate by the topic, "Uh- Oh, it's nothing."

A chuckle came from Hiromi, "It's too late to back out now. You've already revealed too much to them, Iida." He gave them too much information to turn back now. He had to explain or they were going to find some way to force it out of him.

It looked like Uraraka was already trying to pry it out of him, "Y'know, I've been wondering something about you," She grinned. "Admit it, Iida. You're filthy rich!"

The sudden statement surprised the boy. Iida stuttered for a moment, "Uh- I was afraid people would treat me differently if they knew about my family," Midoriya and Uraraka leaned in, dying with anticipation as they waited for his explanation. Hiromi was just eating her food calmly as she acted like she wasn't interested when she clearly was. Iida sighed, "You see, the Iidas have been pro-heroes for generations. It runs in our blood."

"What?" The other two asked.

Nodding absentmindedly, Hiromi made sense of it pretty easily, "That's pretty cool." By the way he acted and carried himself, it wasn't too much of a surprise. It would explain why he tried so hard to be a hero. He not only wanted to become a hero because it was a dream of his, he also wanted to make his family proud.

The nonchalantness coming from Hiromi made Midoriya and Uraraka stare at her with wide eyes, ""Pretty cool"?" They directed their attention back to Iida, "That's awesome!" The two of them practically had stars in their eyes at this information.

"Are the three of you familiar with the Turbo Hero, Ingenium?" Iida asked them.

The name sounded familiar, but Hiromi didn't really know for sure. She wasn't too big on the pro-hero stuff so she only knew some of the obvious ones. Hiromi felt like she would be crucified if she said that in front of Midoriya who was a pro-hero fanboy so the girl nodded, acting like she understood what he meant.

Meanwhile, Midoriya had a wide smile on his face when hearing the hero's name, "I know all about him! He's a super-popular pro with 65 sidekicks working alongside him at his Tokyo agency!" Midoriya stopped with wide eyes, "Don't tell me..."

Standing up with his hands on his hips, Iida exclaimed, "He's my elder brother!"

Okay, but were they going to completely skirt past the fact that his brother had 65 sidekicks? That's a lot! Damn! Hiromi didn't even want to imagine that many people in the agency. They were all close-knit and it would be hard to connect with each other when there were that many people also working with them. Why does he even need that many sidekicks? It seemed a bit of an overkill.

"Your family's famous!" Uraraka shouted.

"I can't believe it!" Midoriya stated.

Hiromi had other things on her mind, "What's it like being rich?"

The answer was sadly never given. Iida only talked more about his older brother, "Ingenium is an unmatched commander who honors the hero code. As the second oldest Iida son, I strive to be just like him," The boy sat back down, moving his gaze downward as he closed his eyes, "However, I think it might be a bit soon for me to be in a real leadership role," He sent a grin to Midoriya, "You, for example. You figured out what the judges were looking for in the practical exam. A rep needs that sort of insight."

The two stared at him with surprise. Hiromi raised an eyebrow at them. What were they so shocked about? Hiromi finally understood when Uraraka said, "That's the first time I've seen you smile, Tenya! You should do it more."

"What are you talking about?" Iida looked confused. "I smile all the time!"

"Hey, yeah, so about that practical exam-" Midoriya started to say.

He was cut off by Uraraka directing a question toward Hiromi, "What about you, Hiromi?"

The sudden question made Hiromi pause her eating. She stared at Uraraka with a puzzled expression, "What?" What was she asking? They were just talking about Iida, why was the question suddenly turned to her?

"Don't "what?" me!" Uraraka grabbed Hiromi's arm and grinned widely. "Tell us about your family!" She was probably expecting her to tell her that her family was rich hotshots as well. By hero standards, the people she considered family probably wouldn't be seen as cool as a family of pro-heroes like Iida had.

It seemed like Uraraka wasn't the only one with questions, " I'd also like to know about that," Midoriya chimed in. He stared at Hirmoi with a look full of interest. "You're always so mysterious that it's hard to read you."

It didn't look like there was going to be a way to avoid this question. They were basically staring holes into her body at this point. And with those reporters and journalists this morning, she wasn't sure whether or not they were actually going to delete the footage where they outed her as being part of the ADA and being an ability user so it would be better for them to hear it from her. "Uh..," Hiromi placed her chopsticks down and readied herself for their reactions. She decided to slowly ease them into it, "Well, my family wouldn't be seen as anything cool like pro-heroes by you guys. They aren't really even my actual blood-related family, though they might as well be because of how close we are. Basically, they work a lot with the detective scene."

"So they work with the police then?" Iida inquired.

Here it goes. "Well-"

Before Hiromi could say anything, she was cut off by a loud sound. There were alarm bells ringing from overhead. Iida and Uraraka gasped at the sudden sound while Midoriya said, "What is that?"

"That's what I'd like to know." Hiromi slowly stood up.

A voice rang out from over the intercom, "Warning. Level Three security breach," Hiromi could hear the exclamations of surprise and horror from some of the students in the cafeteria. The announcement continued, "All students please evacuate the building in an orderly fashion."

Turning to one of the students who spoke during the announcement, Iida asked him, "What's a "Level Three security breach"?" It sounded pretty obvious but considering it was level three, it could be any number of things. It could be something really bad or it could be something they wouldn't have to worry about at all.

Judging from the student's expression, it was not anything good. The student looked like he was ready to bolt at any moment, "It means that someone's managed to get past the school's barriers! This hasn't happened in my three years here. We should get going!"

It wasn't long after he said that that he started running away in a panic. Multiple other people ran as well and soon enough, a full-blown panic started. Students were yelling and screaming, shoving each other to get out. Everyone was piled up into one big group which made it hard for anyone to make it out of the cafeteria.

"Ow," Uraraka was being crushed by the crowd. "This is a total mob!"

"Everyone was quick to react. As I'd expect from UA students." Iida commented.

"Sure," Midoriya agreed. "But they're also causing a huge panic."

Hiromi let out a wince. People were bumping into her and pushing her roughly. People were stepping on her feet as well and it took a lot for her not to flip out on them. She tried to return back to the conversation, "He's right. You'd think that they would be a little more organized or something."

"Crap!" Midoriya exclaimed. She turned her attention to him and saw him being dragged off into the crowd. Her mouth dropped open as she watched him get farther and farther away. "I can't stop!"

"And there goes Midoriya," Hiromi said.

"Godspeed, Midoriya!" Iida shouted after him.

"Oh, no, Deku!" Uraraka said.

Soon enough, Uraraka was also being dragged away as well. She shouted out to them but eventually disappeared into the crowd. Iida was pushed over against the window and people were continuously bumping into Hiromi which made it hard for her to focus on where the others went. Hiromi ended up being elbowed in the side and that ended up being the last straw for her, "Elbow me one more time and you won't have an elbow!"

"Kawakami!" Someone shouted at her.

"What?!" Hiromi turned in the direction of the yell. It had been Iida, she knew that for two reasons. One was that he was looking at her and trying to make it over to her. The second reason was that he called her by her last name even when she told him not to. He was a really proper person, huh?

With a grunt, Iida pulled his face off of the window. He tried to make his way over to Hiromi, making sure to stick close to the wall of windows. He let out a gasp as Hiromi tried to shove her way through the crowd of people to get to him. Iida didn't know if they would be able to make it to each other so he just shouted, "I have an idea!" He stared directly at her, making her let out a noise of question. "Part of your quirk has to do with wind, right?" It was an ability, but sure. Why not? Hiromi nodded. "Could you do anything to make me float above everyone else?"

"On it," Hiromi nodded. "Be ready."

Whispering the name of her ability, she made a cloud form under his feet. He clearly wasn't expecting that seeing as he stumbled a little and tried to steady himself. Hiromi lifted him in the air and followed the direction that Iida was pointing her in. Iida decided that he wasn't getting there fast enough and tried to use his quirk to get there faster. This didn't work out too well and he ended up spinning in constant circles until he made it to his destination.

The crowd watched in confusion as Iida let out a yelp, slamming into a wall. It was the wall that was right above the door. The cloud under his feet disappeared and he grabbed the pipe above him to make sure he didn't fall into the wild crowd, "Listen up, everything is okay!" The students all froze, most of them gasping in surprise. "It's just the media outside. There's absolutely nothing to worry about. Everything's fine! We're UA students. We need to remain calm and prove that we're the best of the best."

"Look, the police are here!" One student yelled.

"You mean that everyone was freaking out for nothing?" Hiromi crossed her arms and shook her head in annoyance. This is why she hated the media. Causing all kinds of chaos when it wasn't needed. The police did pull up to the school and escorted the press off of the campus which Hiromi was happy about.

It took a little before things went completely calm again. Once everything had calmed down, everyone was free to go to their classes. The students talked about what happened the whole way to the classroom and even while they waited for class to start. When it was time for class to start, Yaoyorozu and Midoriya stood in front of the class. Yaoyorozu was the first to speak, "It's time, class rep. Let's begin."

Once again, Midoriya was shaking wildly, "Uh... Okay, so we need to figure out who the other class officers will be," He moved his gaze down to the floor, "But first, There's something that I wanna say," All of a sudden, it was like a switch flipped and he stopped shaking. Hiromi leaned forward, waiting for what he had to say. He still refused to look at anyone, "I've thought a lot about this," Midoriya closed his eyes, "And I think that Tenya Iida should be our class rep!" Iida gasped. Midoriya opened his eyes, "]He was able to capture everyone's attention and get us in line. So I believe that he should be the one leading our class from now on!"

"Yeah, you know what?" Kirishima started. He and Kaminari both looked back at Iida, " If Midoriya vouches for him, I'm good," Kirishima and Kaminari shared a look. "Plus he was a big help. He totally manned up and took charge, right?"

"Yup!" Kaminari agreed. "Oh! Did you notice he looked like the dude on the emergency exit signs when he was on the wall earlier?" I mean... He wasn't wrong. He was copying the exact pose of the guy on the emergency exit sign and he didn't even know it.

One person was particularly happy about all of this excitement, "This is a waste of time," Aizawa suddenly spoke. Midoriya let out a yelp. "I don't care who the rep is, just hurry up." He laid on his side once more like he was ready to take yet another nap.

After hearing the words everyone had to say, Iida stood up to say his own piece, "If Midoriya is nominating me for this job..," He trailed off. He was quiet until he finally raised his hand high, "Then I humbly accept. I pledge to carry out the duties of class rep to the best of my abilities!"

"Sounds good, Emergency Exit!" Kirishima exclaimed.

"Emergency Exit Iida!" Kaminari joked. "Don't let us down, man!"

"Hello, I got two more votes than him," Yaoyorozu stated, clearly not too pleased with this development.

Hiromi on the other hand was happy with this arrangement. She crossed her arms and leaned back into her chair with a grin, "This seems to be a great choice." Looks like she had been right all along about Iida being suited for being the class representative.
