Chapter 27 - Prom Night

Thirteen Years Earlier:

"Char, you didn't go to our junior prom, but you have to go this year. It's our last chance."

Charlotte shook her head. "I don't even have a boyfriend, so it would be silly and a waste of money."

"Well for starters, the valedictorian should go to her senior prom, it's like a rule."

Charlotte groaned. "I'm not the valedictorian yet."

Lena laughed out loud. "Yeah right. We both know that if you just write your name on all of your final exams and leave the rest blank, you will still be our class valedictorian."

Lena rolled her eyes. "I know that Keegan you asked you, he's kinda cute in a gawky sorta' way, and he is actually taller than you! What did you tell him when he asked?"

Charlotte shrugged. "I told him that I would think about it."

Lena laughed. "Right, and in girl code that means no. So, here's what you're going to do. You will call him right now and say that you'd love to go to prom with him. You guys can double with Mike and me. We already have a limo booked..." Lena winked at her friend. "...and we're staying in a suite at the Grove Hotel."

Charlotte stood up and put her hands on her hips. "L, I am not losing my virginity on prom night to some random dude I've only dated a couple of times!"

Lena reached over and squeezed her best friend's hand. "Who said anything about that?"

Charlotte gave her friend a wary look. "Well, only half the kids in our class are planning to, but not me, I want my first time to be special like yours was, and I'm still not ready."

"I know that Char, but just call Keegan and tell him yes. You can read him the, what's that phrase your grandfather uses?"

"Rules of Engagement."

"Yeah that, so just say that you want to go to prom with him, but go but there will be no sex, booze, hotel room and what not. Come on Char, we have to go together please? It's the only senior prom we'll ever have."

Charlotte rolled her eyes. "Okay, okay, fine then. I'll go, but only because I love you L."

Charlotte thought a moment and then asked her best friend a question. "But please tell me that you have not rigged the voting for prom queen?"

Lena laughed. "No, my sources amongst the in crowd which we are not in, by the way, tell me that's already been done, you know Chicago style. The word on the street is that one of the Brittany's is going to win."

Charlotte rolled her eyes. "Which one?"

Lena deadpanned her answer. "You know, the pretty blonde one."

"They're all blonde."

Lena laughed again. "You are right about that, but to be honest, you are too nerdy to be prom Queen."

Charlotte gave her BFF a shocked look. "Nerdy, me?"

Lena counted on her fingers. "Yeah, you know, tall skinny tom-girl, pilot who runs track, has a perfect 4.0 GPA and helps other kids with their homework."

Charlotte thought for a moment. "Good then, it's working. I've been cultivating that image since I was 10."

Lena gestured to her tall friend. "Stand up Char."

Charlotte reluctantly complied and Lena went on. "Now, do a 360. Yes, this could work. You know, like those teen romcoms. The nerdy girl takes off her glasses and instantly becomes the prom queen."

Charlotte gave her friend a wicked smile. "I don't wear glasses L."

Lena shrugged. "Still could work you know, you are a hottie kind of nerd."

Charlotte rolled her eyes.

Lena smiled broadly. "Good, now we have to find you a dress, something that shows off those long legs and cute boobs of yours."

Charlotte covered her face with her palms and groaned.
