Best Gift

Flashback contd.

Then he cupped my face and slowly leaned in closer. I flushed, my hands turning cold. I had never felt so nervous before. I gulped twice as he continued to lean in. He removed my glasses with one hand. I closed my eyes tightly as our lips were just about to touch. The world seemed to stand still, the gentle breeze rustling the leaves around us, and the soft murmurs of the lake creating a perfect backdrop.

Suddenly, Taehyung's phone started ringing. I fluttered my eyes open, the sound ruining our perfect moment. Taehyung furrowed his eyebrows in annoyance. "Who the heck is it?" he growled.

"Our moment is already ruined, so take the call. We can pick this up some other time," I said, stepping back to give him space. We had been so close.

He nodded and answered the call, while I turned away, gazing at the purple sky. The sun had set, and the temperature was dropping rapidly. Despite the cool air, I was still sweating, needing time to calm my nerves. So many things had happened within a few minutes—I had become Taehyung's girlfriend from just a friend. It still felt like a dream, and I could hardly believe it was real.

"What are you thinking?" Taehyung's voice once again brought me back from my wonderland.

"I still can't believe all this is happening in reality!" I admitted.

"Me neither," he replied, a wide grin spreading across his face. We giggled, sharing the joy and disbelief of the moment.

"Shall we go for dinner? It's getting dark," he suggested.

"Okay," I agreed.

We walked toward his car, and just as I was about to enter the passenger seat, Taehyung stopped me. "Wait! I have something for you," he said.

Curious, I watched as he went to the back of the car and opened the trunk. After a few moments, he emerged carrying a huge, pink teddy bear. The bear was holding a heart with both hands, its soft, plush face beaming with a sweet expression.

"I love you more than yesterday,

But less than tomorrow"

This was written on it.

"Oh my God! Taehyung! Is this for me?" I cried out in excitement.

He scratched his nape sheepishly. "This isn't as expensive as a ring or a bracelet, but it's what I can afford right now. I'll buy you better gifts once I start earning."

"What are you talking about? This is the best gift anyone could get for her first proposal! Thank you so much! I don't need any ring or bracelet. They're just for show. Plushies are way better. I've always wanted my dream boy to gift me plushies instead of expensive items."

"Really? I didn't know that. I guess I am your dream boy then," he said, smiling cutely.

"No doubt you are! I will keep this with me always. It will remind me of you when I miss you."I stood on my tiptoes and gently pecked his cheek. "Thank you."

His eyes widened at my action, and his cheeks turned pink. He stood there in a daze."Shall we get in?" I asked, snapping him out of his trance. He nodded, and we got into the car.

As we drove to the restaurant, the atmosphere was filled with a mixture of excitement and contentment. The teddy bear sat in the back seat, a soft reminder of our new beginning. Taehyung kept glancing over at me, a gentle smile on his lips, his hand occasionally reaching out to hold mine.

The city lights began to twinkle as the evening set in, casting a romantic glow on everything around us. We arrived at a cozy little restaurant, its warm lights and inviting ambiance making it the perfect place for our first dinner as a couple.

Taehyung parked the car and came around to open my door. "My lady," he said with a playful bow.

I giggled and took his hand, feeling a flutter of happiness in my chest. "Thank you, kind sir."

We walked inside, hand in hand, and were shown to a quiet corner table by the window. The menu was filled with delicious options, but I barely glanced at it, too absorbed in the joy of the moment and the company of the person I loved.

"To us," Taehyung said, raising his glass once we had ordered. "To new beginnings and unforgettable memories."

"To us," I echoed, clinking my glass against his.

The rest of the evening was filled with laughter, shared stories, and the kind of deep, meaningful conversation that only happens when two people truly connect. As we left the restaurant and headed back to the car, I knew that this day, and this simple yet profound gift, would forever be etched in my memory.

Present

"Is that the same teddy bear that lies on your bed?" Jungkook asked, his eyes widening in realization.

I nodded, a thin smile spreading across my lips.

"Y/N?" He asked after a few minutes of silence.

"Hmm?"

"Have you thought about your future at all?"

I turned my head towards him. "What do you mean?"

"I mean, a fresh start? You can't just keep living like this, reminiscing about the past. It will only hurt you."

"Trust me, Jungkook. I would have been the happiest if I could. But you know what? After that incident, I lost trust in love itself. It's a feeling that will leave you shattered. It breaks you into so many pieces that you can't mend them in your entire lifetime. I don't think I'll ever be able to fall in love with anyone."

"I don't know about love, but I can promise to always stay by your side."

"Don't give me false hopes, Jungkook... Taehyung had also said the same thing. But he broke his promise." Tears welled up in the corners of my eyes now.

"I'm not Taehyung. Give life another chance... it will change your world," Jungkook said, his tone comforting yet determined.

"Thank you for your comforting words. I'll think it over. Now, shall we go?" I asked, trying to push aside the heaviness in my heart.

He nodded, and we drove back to our apartment, the conversation lingering in the air like an unresolved melody. As we entered the familiar space, I couldn't help but feel a sense of emptiness, a longing for something more, yet a fear of the unknown. But with Jungkook's words echoing in my mind, I knew that perhaps, just perhaps, there was a glimmer of hope waiting for me in the future.

Jungkook's pov

Flashback

I was busy on my laptop when my mom told me that Taehyung had come to visit me. I was confused because it was 8 PM and he came without notice. I asked my mom to send him to my room.

"Jungkookieeee!" He peeked in, his usual cheerful self.

"Hey! What brings you here?" I asked, turning to face him. He got in and jumped onto my bed, a wide grin plastered on his face.

"Why are you so happy today?" I inquired, my eyes still glued to the laptop screen. "Hey!" Suddenly, my laptop screen went dark. I looked up to see Taehyung spinning the plug in his hand. "What was that for?! Put it back in the socket!" I protested.

"No, I won't! You listen to me first!" he insisted, his eyes sparkling with excitement.

"Fine," I sighed, rolling my eyes. "Tell me what you want to. I'm listening."

He took a seat beside me, playing with his fingers nervously and biting his lips. Then, with a shy smile, he said, "Tomorrow, I'm planning to propose to Y/N."

"What?!" My eyes widened in disbelief. "How? Where? When?" I bombarded him with questions, unable to contain my excitement.

"Hey, hey! Calm down! You're more excited than me," he chuckled, trying to ease my enthusiasm.

"Well, it can't be helped, I guess. I am your bff after all. You've finally decided to confess after waiting for about 3 months," I said, understandingly.

"Yes, but there's a problem..." Taehyung's voice trailed off, his brows furrowed in worry.

"A problem?" I echoed, concern creeping into my voice.

"Hmm. I'm out of ideas. I want it to be different and special! Something that she'll never forget. Please help me with it," he pleaded, desperation evident in his tone.

I slapped my forehead in mock exasperation. "Your girl, you're proposing, and I'm the one giving you ideas?"

"Jebaaaal (Please), Kookie! I need help!" he implored, his eyes pleading with me.

"Okay, okay, let me think..." I paused, racking my brain for a brilliant idea. Finally, it hit me. "How about taking her to the park?"

"Nomu nomu gomawa!" Taehyung exclaimed, gratitude flooding his expression as he hugged me, his iconic smile returning. But it faded just as quickly. "What if she rejects me?" he asked, his voice tinged with uncertainty.

"Why are you being a pessimist? Just go for it! Give it your best shot, and the rest is up to her," I reassured him, hoping to dispel his doubts.

"You're right. Jungkook, should I get her a gift?" he asked, shifting the conversation.

"You definitely should. Any ideas?"

"What about a necklace?" he suggested.

"Too expensive. Can you afford it?"

Taehyung pondered for a moment. "Then how about a coffee mug?"

"Nah, too obvious. What about a plushie?" I proposed.

"Great idea! My friend has become intelligent! Feeling like a proud father!" Taehyung joked, his playful demeanor returning.

"I was born intelligent!" I retorted, pulling up my collar. "You had no role in it!"

"Yeah, yeah, ungrateful kid! Anyways, I need to go now! Bye!" Taehyung hurriedly bid me farewell, darting down the staircase with heavy steps that echoed through the house.

"Aishh! This boy, he'll never grow up!" I muttered to myself, shaking my head in amusement.

"He's your friend after all," my mom stood at my door.

"Mom! What was that for?" I protested, feigning offense.

"Nothing, come down for dinner," she replied with a smile.

I sighed, chuckling at the familiar banter. "Alright, coming!"
