Chapter 31
"And do you, Barbara Gordon, take Luke Fox to be your lawfully wedded husband?" This is it, Gordon. Make your decision.
"I..." I stutter. "I..." Dinah's words ring through my head.
When the time comes, you'll make the right decision.
"I can't." Gasps ring throughout the church, although I see Dinah giving me a warm smile.
"I bed your pardon?" The Vicar asks. I can't even look at Luke. But I owe it to him. "This whole time, Luke's been my rebound guy, and I didn't realize. I've been ignoring my feelings towards someone I care about because they hurt me. But I can't marry you, Luke. Not without giving this person a proper shot, without horrible timing." I give the audience what I hope is a confident look.
"I knew it! She's just out for the money." A man from Luke's side stands up and yells.
"No, she wants love!" Helena retorts. Trust her to have my back.
Pretty soon, the whole crowd is screaming at each other. I take the opportunity to slip out the back door.
I pull of my heels, veil and earrings, and undo my hair. I rip off the puffy part of my dress, and grab Dick's batarang. I hid it in the hem.
"So..." A voice says behind me. I spin around on my bare foot.
"Dick, I-"
"You really did all that just so we could have a proper chance? One without aliens, death or average relationship stuff?" He asks. I nod.
"Well, I don't know if I can forgive you..." Tears start streaming down my face. "Oh my god, I'm kidding, Babs. Stay whelmed. I'm right here." I hug Dick as tightly as possible, and don't ever want to let go.
"If you really want someone to thank, it's Dinah. Her words reminded me who I wanted to be with more." I sniff, finally releasing my grip.
"Maybe tomorrow. Right now, we should probably get out of here before we get beat up. And this is gonna be all over GBS tomorrow." Dick squeezes my hand. "Need a ride?"
"Yeah, thanks. The Loft?" I nod. "I can't believe you're still nice to me after this."
"Hey, I owe you after the whole 'death' thing." Dick shrugs. "Plus, I never did get over my childhood crush."
"Ditto." I bury my head in his shoulder, and mascara stains his skin.
"Relax, Babs. We'll sort this all out tomorrow. Just calm down, I'm here, okay? I always will be. You could try and destroy the world and I'd still be there for you." Dick says, speeding through downtown Gotham.
"Did you get my present?" He asks as we climb the stairs to his loft.
"The batarang? Yeah, I love it." I hold it up.
"No, my other present. Break the batarang." Dick orders.
"What? No!" I protest, but he takes it anyway, and snaps it in half, but hands it back to me before parting the pieces. A rose gold and aquamarine ring falls into my palm with the words 'Te iubesc' engraved on it. "I figured it was my last chance to...you know..." Before Dick can react, I put my hand on the back of his head and kiss him.
"That's a yes, if you didn't know already." I whisper.
"Good." Dick replies.
"I love you." I'm so happy, I'm crying.
"I love you more, Babs."
