Chapter 30

Barbara's POV
I stare at Luke as he holds out the gold and diamond ring.
"Yes, Luke. I'll marry you." I say, and he slips on the ring before standing up. I should be happy, but all I can think of is one certain Boy Wonder. He leans to kiss me, but my communicator buzzes.
Saved by the metaphorical bell.

"So, you've come back?" I ask, back to back with Dick as about a hundred masked assassins surround us.
"It's my day off." He explains as we beat the cheese out of the mercenaries.
"Batwing asked me to marry him." Dick stares at me as he punches a head.
"He what?!" He yells. "What did you say?"
"I said yes." I say bluntly.
"We need to talk. Now." Dick cleans up the assassins.
"There's nothing to talk about." I growl. "You're about to marry a guy!" He protests.
"Would you be saying that if I were marrying you?" I fold my arms. He says nothing.
"I'm not going." And with that he jumps over the wall. What did I do?

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Babsie's getting married! Babsie's getting married!" Charlie sings. I asked her, Helena, Zinda, Dawn and Dinah to help me choose a dress.
"Yay!" I manage to smile, although I couldn't sleep last night. I couldn't get Dick's face out of my head after I told him I was getting married.
"Girls, I need to talk to Babs. Alone." Dinah shops everyone out of the room.
"What?" I sigh.
"You don't want to do this, do you?" Dinah asks. I try not to cry.
"I...I mean, Luke's a nice guy. But I...he's like my rebound guy. I don't know if I..." I burst into tears and she wraps her arms around me.
"It's okay, Baby. When the time comes, you'll make the right decision."

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Today's the day. Dick said that-no, stop. You're marrying Luke.
I fiddle with my hair. It just seems too...perfect. And I'm far from that.

I walk into the room of my bridesmaids.
"Oh my god, you're beautiful!" Helena exclaims.
"Great Rao!" Kara whispers. The other girls join in, although Dinah is giving me her knowing big sister look, and Stephanie is pouting the corner. She definitely didn't agree with this marriage.
"Thanks guys."

"My Barbara's always been a handful. I don't see a ring changing that." My Dad says to Luke during the pre-party.
"I wouldn't be marrying her if it could." Somehow, I'm still thinking of Dick. He would've said something like 'a handful? More like two.'
Speak of the devil. I hear a motorcycle in the distance.
"I'll be right back." I excuse myself and slink out the back door. Sure enough, pulling off a black motor helmet, is Dick, black jeans and all.

"You...said you weren't coming." I say carefully.
"I had to give you this." He hands me a box. We stare at each other for a second.
"Thanks." I mumble after a while.
"I should probably go." He starts driving away on his bike, just as I open the box. It's a batarang. Not just any batarang, though. It's the first one I ever carved, with Dick's help. It has our initials on the rim.
"Dick,-" I turn, but he's gone. "Wait."

Third Person POV
Dick parked his motorcycle behind a tree, and leaned on the outside of the church. He wasn't sure why he came, but part of him still hoped Barbara would come back to him.

Barbara's POV
As I walk up the aisle, I see the smiling faces of my friends. But not my family. No Bruce. No Steph (she bailed after crying for ten minutes straight). No Cass. No Jay. No Tim. No Dami. No Dick. None of the people who supported me since I was ten.

"And do you, Luke Fox, take Barbara Gordon to be your lawfully wedded wife?" The vicar asks.
"I do." He replies. I hope no one can see my hands shaking.
"And do you, Barbara Gordon, take Luke Fox to be your lawfully wedded husband?" This is it, Gordon. Make your decision.
"I..." I stutter. "I..." Dinah's words ring through my head.

When the time comes, you'll make the right decision.
