Chapter 29: Attacked

Hiccup's POV

I woke up to the sound of horrified screams tearing through my ears. I shot up out of bed, threw on some clothes and ran outside along with Toothless.

The high pitched screams of the villagers grew closer and closer as increasingly more of them ran up to the heavy doors of the Meade Hall, all desperate to get away from whatever had struck this much fear into their hearts. I furrowed my brows as I glanced up at the darkened sky, only able to make out a large figure through the dark clouds.

But when the figure landed in the middle of town square and roared with all its might, I felt the color drain from my face as my eyes widened to the size of dinner plates.

"Razor Claws" I whispered to myself as I frantically searched for the handle of my sword. When my hands eventually were wrapped around the handle of my sword, I couldn't help but glance over at Toothless, who watched the roaring Razor Claw in the middle of town square with such fury that I feared he would explode. Toothless nostrils flared as he stood tall and made eye contact with the Razor Claw, as if to inform it that he was the Alpha and the Alpha was to be respected.

But the Razor Claw couldn't seem to care less about the dragon hierarchy and instead of bowing to the Alpha, it roared at him before steam began pouring out of its mouth and it shot a silvery blast at Toothless, which he narrowly avoided by rolling to the side.

Toothless was furious. The King of dragons straightened his back, making him stand even taller than before as his nostrils flared and his sharp teeth were on full display. Toothless inhaled, inflated his entire chest, before letting out a roar so might it shook the very ground we stood upon. I've got to admit, I was very impressed.

But unfortunately for Toothless, the Razor Claw couldn't seem to care less as it kept on terrorizing the village, letting out another roar, as if he was signaling his friends to join in on the raid.

"Hiccup!" The voice of Fishlegs broke me out of my trance as I tore my gaze away from the exchange that was going on between the two dragons and turned my focus onto my friends.

"What's going on? What happened?" I asked them as Toothless finally gave in to his rage and pounced the Razor Claw in the middle of town square, motivating the other dragons to fight the other Razor Claws that had just arrived as well.

"We have absolutely no clue" Ruffnut began.

Fishlegs nodded along. "Yes, everything was going as it would normally until they suddenly appeared out of the blue, at first one by one and then the rest of what we believe to be the pack. We're so sorry Hiccup"

I pinched the bridge of my nose as I followed Toothless confrontation with theRazor Claw out of the corner of my eye. "There was nothing you could've done anyway, so don't apologize. The only thing we should be focusing on now is getting these dragons off Berk, understood?"

My friends all nodded in unison as they reached for their weapons.

"Good. Now, please do not forget that we know next to nothing about these dragons, so be careful!" I warned them, earning yet another nod before they whistled for their dragons to pick them up so they could join the fight.

Toothless came striding back up to me, making it clear that he was the winner of the battle between him and the Razor Claw. I scratched my best friend under his chin. "I'm so proud of you, bud. Ready to kick some more dragon-butt?"

Toothless replied with a firm nod as he turned towards the wave of incoming Razor Claws, a deadly look in his eye as he waited for me to climb on.

I secured myself to Toothless and activated his tail fin. "Then let's do this"

Astrid's POV

Loud roars and high pitched screams awoke me from my slumber. I quickly threw on some clothes before rushing out the door, trying to find the source of all this despair.

In the middle of town square laid a large, dark dragon with long, sharp talons incredibly still and surrounded by what I assumed to be a puddle of blood, judging by the bite marks on its neck.

I knit my brows together as the sounds of dragon blasts filled my ears and my eyes were drawn to the skies, where the Chief and his friends were busy chasing away dragons similar to the one in the middle of town square.

My gaze fell back down to the earth as several villagers rushed past me and up the stone steps leading to the Meade Hall, carrying their most valuable possessions as they fled from the attacking dragons.

Gods, how I wanted to help, how I wanted to do something! But what could a Viking that couldn't lift an axe, swing a sword or shoot with a bow and arrow do in a situation like this? I was completely useless, all thanks to my memory loss.

I felt like such a coward as I went back inside, sliding down the front door and burying my head in my hands. I had never felt this useless, this cowardly. Or at least that's what I think.

But that was when it hit me like a dragon falling from the sky, I didn't have to be useless, I didn't have to be a coward. My gaze fell upon the chest beneath the stairs. I knew exactly what was in it and no matter how incapable I was of wielding it, I would anyway.

I grabbed the double-edged axe and tossed it from hand to hand almost instinctively. It was as if my head had forgotten everything, but my muscles still remembered. The same thing hadn't happened when I trained with Hiccup's friends, but for some reason it happened now, with this axe, which was perfectly balanced for me.

I tightened my grip around the handle of the axe as I stormed outside, feeling more powerful than ever with only one thought in my mind: Help out those in need.

As I ran past the presumably dead dragon in the middle of town square, my ears picked up the sound of muffled crying. My eyes scanned the spaces between the houses as I searched for the source of the crying. It didn't take long before I found a small group of children, hiding behind some barrels in an alley, hands covering their ears as small tears rolled down their reddened cheeks.

"Hey, are you alright?" I crouched down and asked the children, visually scanning them for any injuries.

A tiny brunette that was pressed up against the barrels shook her head violently as her eyes and cheeks glistened with tears. "We're scared of the big dragons!"

I knitted my brows together as my eyes studied each of the children. "I see. What do you say I help you all get to safety, where you can stay until the big, scary dragons have gone away?"

The children exchanged glances with each other before all nodding in unison, standing up and clinging themselves to me. I scooped up the smallest of them in my arms and let the one that seemed to be the oldest ride on my back.

I made sure to cross the town square when the dragons were far enough away to miss the four of us, before running as fast as I could up to the Meade Hall, where two large Vikings let us in. I followed the children as far inside as it was possible to get before sitting us down at a table.

"Thank you" The little boy said, sending me a small smile as he twirled his thumbs.

I smiled right back at him. "No problem"

"What do we do now?" A squeaky voiced, raven haired girl asked me.

I shrugged as leaned on the table. "There's not much else we can do other than wait here for the Chief and the dragon riders to chase the dragons away from the island"

The young boy cocked his head to the side and sent me a puzzled look. "Aren't you a dragon rider?"

I blinked rapidly as I shook my head. "What? I'm no dragon rider, what are you talking about?"

"Yes you are!" The raven haired girl blurted out. "You're Astrid, one of the best dragon riders in the archipelago! You fly Stormfly and you've been on countless adventures with the other dragon riders!"

I raised an eyebrow at the children. "I have?"

"Yes! Gobber told us all about the history of the dragon riders during one of our first classes" The tiny brunette from earlier finally spoke up.

"Huh" I uttered as I racked my brain for memories of my times as a dragon rider, only to be met by the usual black spots in my memory. "Maybe I should get out there and help out then"

"Yes! Go save Berk!" The children cheered me on, making me chuckle a little.

"I'll do my best" I shot a smile to the children before tightening the grip on my axe and marching out of the Meade Hall.

Hiccup's POV

"Another one, bud!" I exclaimed as Toothless fired yet another plasma blast at the Razor Claw ahead of us, sending him plummeting into the ocean.

I furrowed my brows as I watched the dragon sink beneath the waves, my heart sinking in my chest as I patted Toothless on his side. "I'm sorry you have to do this, bud"

Toothless cooed at me, as if he was trying to reassure me that he was fine with it. I scratched him beneath the chin as we flew towards the next one, but it seemed as if nothing could keep my mind from wandering to a certain someone.

"Fishlegs!" I yelled as we attacked a new Razor Claw.

"Yes?" He replied, turning towards me as Meatlug spewed lava on a Razor Claw beneath the duo.

"Could you please go check on Astrid for me?" Fishlegs nodded as he gave me a thumbs up and flew in the direction of my house.

We managed to get rid of yet another Razor Claw before Fishlegs returned.

"Hiccup!" Fishlegs and Meatlug came flying up beside us.

"That didn't take too long, is she in the Meade Hall?" I asked him as I fought off an attacking Razor Claw with my sword.

"She isn't there" Fishlegs informed me as he ducked under a passing Zippleback. "Or anywhere for that matter"

I kicked the Razor Claw back with my good foot, allowing Toothless to take over for me. "WHAT?!"

"I ... I'm sorry Hiccup, the guards just said that she marched straight out and they hadn't seen her since" Fishlegs said, his voice on the verge of breaking as he clubbed a Razor Claw in the head.

"In the name of Thor" I rubbed my temples. "I'll never be able to live with myself if something happened to her"

"Uh, Hiccup?" Snotlout's voice snapped me out of deep thoughts on how Astrid had been brutally killed.

"What now, Snotlout?" I hissed at him as I tried to process the information I had been given.

But all he could do was point at something behind me. I turned around, ready to explode with rage, but was rather surprised when I felt both my stomach and jaw drop at the sight in front of me.

A Razor Claw the size of a small island was flying towards us, and in its razor sharp talons, it had Astrid.
