"I'm getting on the plane now, yes I promise to call you when I land. I must go now, ok, love you too Dad. I will talk to you when I land, bye."
I finish off my conversation with my dad as I sit down in my seat. Once I'm seated I notice that the man sitting next to me, who gets the window seat, by the way, is reading the book 'Dracula' by Bram Stoker. I then start to do something that is a pet peeve of mine, but I always find myself doing it to other people. Reading over the shoulder of someone you know is one thing, but doing it to a total stranger is a lot more awkward, especially when you get caught. Suddenly, the book is slammed shut and the man has an irritated look on his face. When he slammed the book, because it was a hardcover, it made quite a sound which drew me out of the trance I was in while reading. I gave him a shy smile and he continued to look irritated. Like my dad always says, "When all else fails or you don't know what to say, just apologize," which I was about to do when the gentleman spoke first. By the way, what he said was not very gentleman like at all.
"Is there something wrong with your eyes? Haven't you learned yet that staring is rude? Oh, I'm sorry I hadn't noticed you're nearly eighty years old. You probably have dementia and forgot. Don't stare at my book. Get your own if you want to read something."
I didn't know if in that instant I was transported back to high school or if this guy was a sixteen-year-old bully stuck in an adult's body, like from the movie 'Big' with Tom Hanks. I wasn't sure if I should respond to what he just said or just ignore him. I started to hum the tune of the song 'You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch,' because the guy next to me reminded me of someone that would steal little kids' presents. My humming stopped when I noticed that the seat belt light had gone off, indicating that it was safe to leave your seat. The man next to me, whose name I still hadn't learned, not that I would want to after how rude he was to me, looked like he was trying to get my attention. Me being me, I didn't notice and just played it off as nothing. "Who does he think he is calling me an eighty-year-old lady? Please! I am only twenty-four." Suddenly I was pulled out of my thoughts when I felt a tap on my shoulder. When I turned my head to the right, I saw him glaring at me.
"Now it's time for me to ask you, Sir, is there something wrong with your eyes?"
He looked down at my bag, which was on the floor at my feet, and then back up at me. I probably sound really dumb right now and any normal person would know what he meant by that, but I didn't so I asked him. "I'm sorry. I don't understand. Is there something you want me to do?"
"Maybe if you kept your head out of the clouds you would have heard me ask you to move your bag so I could get passed."
I smiled at his statement, making him give me a questioning look, which turned into an annoyed look quickly. "Right, moving my bag, sorry it's just that your statement about keeping my head out of the clouds distracted me." He just gave me a pointed look and huffed in annoyance while gesturing for me to move my bag. I did move my bag, but not before clarifying what I had said which didn't make him any happier. "It's just that we are in a plane in the clouds and you said my head was in the clouds."
"Listen, lady, I don't care about your answer. I would just like you to move your bag so I can get by and if you don't, I will gladly do it myself."
"Wow! Someone is in a grumpy mood," I thought. I did what he asked and moved my bag onto the seat to my left because no one was sitting there. After the guy left to go do whatever it was that was "so" important, I reached over and picked up the book he was reading. I saw that he was in chapter ten, so I started reading from his spot. I had no idea what was going on in the book, but I felt compelled to read it. Maybe it was because I wasn't supposed to? I looked up when I felt something touch my knees. He was back and I still had his book in my hands. His back was to me and with the speed of a mongoose, I put his book back in his seat.
"Just so you know, I saw you reading my book when I was coming back to sit down," he said to me with a deadpan look; cue the shy smile yet again. I took out my phone to see what time it was and noted that the flight had three more hours left. I decided to take a nap to pass the time until the plane landed. It felt like I had just fallen asleep when I was awakened by the flight attendant telling everyone to put their seatbelts back on. I thought this meant we had landed, but that didn't explain why everyone on the plane had worried expressions on their faces. Right, when I was about to ask the flight attendant what was going on, she went to the front of the plane to help some woman calm down her child that had started crying and screaming, "We are all going to die." I turned to Mr. Rude and asked him, "What's going on?" He picked his head up from his book and smiled at me, which slightly surprised me.
"I see your head was in the clouds again. We hit a storm and now something has happened to one of the engines. The pilots are going to have to make an emergency landing, only it seems that they can't find a safe spot to land."
I was amazed at how calm he was. From what he just said, it sounds like that little kid was right. Other than the fact of course how I wasn't going to let that happen. I muttered to my self, but Mr. Rude heard me and made this comment.
"What can you do? You are an eighty-year-old lady with dementia."
"First, I am twenty-four not eighty and you are seriously annoying me with that. Well, Sir, I'm going to do this." I closed my eyes and put my hands out, palms facing upwards. I could hear him snicker in the background, so I blocked out all the noise around me and concentrated on the plane and the airport we were supposed to be landing at. This was going to take all my energy out of me, which makes me glad I had taken that nap beforehand. In literally a blink of an eye the plane was on the runway of the airport we were supposed to be landing at in an hour. When I opened my eyes, everyone was amazed at what just happened and the looks on their faces told me they would be wondering what just happened for the rest of their lives. I looked to my right to find Mr. Rude starring at me in awe. I don't know what happens to me when I teleport things with a lot of mass, but I have been told by family that my eyes open after I close them and turn white. Which to me sounds cool, but by the look on my row buddy, it looks like it scared the life out of him. "Is there something wrong with your eyes? Haven't you learned yet that staring is rude?" He just blinked his eyes at me not saying a word.
I started packing my bags and getting ready to leave since I was in the back of the plane I had to wait for the people ahead of me to leave before I could. People were murmuring to each other about what happened and whether to believe it or not. Wow, I guess even if someone experiences something extraordinary, they still can't believe it because of how extraordinary it was. I will never understand the way people think. I walk out into the area where you pick up your suitcase and while I was waiting I got a call from my dad.
"I hear the plane you were on suddenly appeared at the airport an hour before it was due. That's not the amazing part, the amazing part is that it just suddenly appeared there out of nowhere. I'm sure you have a perfectly good reason for using your powers in public. Just tell me how many people saw you use them?"
"Don't worry dad, only the guy I was sitting next to me saw me and he doesn't even know my name or anything about me really. He is still on the plane as far as I know. He was turned into a human statue, from the scare I gave him."
"Ok, just let me know if I have to erase anyone's memories. I will see you at the house in a minute. I'm just glad you are home safe. I missed you."
"I missed you too dad; see you in a little bit." After I ended the call I grabbed my suitcase. I saw my row buddy running towards me, so I turned the corner and when the coast was clear I teleported home. Right before I did so I saw him turn the corner looking right at me, I smiled and waved before disappearing from sight.
