Chapter 63 ~ B-Blood everywhere
Hayden's POV
I'm broken. The more I think about her saying there can't be an us, the more I feel myself falling into a dark abyss. I'm lost somewhere in my mind when I realize Nick and Sofia are no longer in the SUV. As I look out the windows, red and blue lights are flashing from police cars. It is then that I notice the police tape around the diner. I don't know what happened here, but it doesn't look good. It also doesn't make sense why Nick and Sofia got out of the car. They may be curious as to what happened, but our priority should be finding Isla.
I look out the window and see Sofia and Nick walking up to two kids about our age that have blood all over their clothes and arms. With my curiosity now getting the best of me, I jump out of the car and run to catch up with Nick and Sofia. As we reach them, Killian, Tyler and Luke are walking up too.
"Zoe, are you okay? What happened?" Killian asks. Who the hell is Zoe? By the way Nick and Sofia are acting it seems like they know her too.
"S-She shot them. Oh God. B-Blood everywhere." The girl who I presume is Zoe cries. Zoe clutches onto the guy's shirt who is standing next to her. "What if they don't make it?" Zoe collapses on the floor while he tries to comfort her.
"Who?" Sofia asks. "Who was shot?"
Zoe is so hysterical that she is unable to answer. "A friend of ours and a girl Zoe recently met." The guy says as he gently rubs Zoe's back. "The girl was having some problems at home and needed someone to talk to, so we met her here."
"Fuck. Zoe, tell me it's not her. I'm begging you to tell me it's not her." Nick cries. Sofia drops to her knees crying while Killian looks sick. "Zoe, was she shot?" Zoe nods her head and cries even harder.
Nick's expression changes to pure hate. "You're lying. You're fucking lying. It wasn't Isla. It can't be!" Nick screams.
The guy shoves Nick as hard as he can. "Don't fucking scream at her. You barely know her. What gives you the right to make things worse?" Nick is fuming. He pulls his arm back to punch the guy, but Killian tackles Nick to the ground.
"Spencer." Zoe manages to say. "She's their best friend."
Spencer looks at Nick. "Man, I didn't know. I'm sorry. Our friend Thomas was shot along with her."
"Wait. Are you saying Isla was shot?" Luke screams. The puzzle pieces are slowly starting to come together for Luke, Tyler and me.
Spencer nods his head. "Yeah, she called Zoe, saying she was upset and wanted to talk. Zoe and Thomas had met her a few days ago along with them." He says point at Nick, Killian and Sofia. "We were all sitting in a booth when this girl walked in looking crazy. She spotted your friend and started calling her a slut and whore. She also said something about stealing her boyfriend. It was kind of hard to understand her. The girl was either really drunk or on drugs. Your friend looked terrified."
"What did the girl look like?" I ask having an all too bad feeling that I know who he is talking about.
"Skinny, about the same height as Zoe. Oh, and she's a redhead." Well fuck me. "She was screaming at your friend before she pulled out a gun. Thomas tried to get the gun from her and in the process, he got shot in the leg. She then turned the gun on your friend and shot her twice in the stomach. After that she dropped her gun and smirked. She started saying shit like 'you deserve to die', 'you can now be reunited with your parents', 'No one will miss you' and 'they were all just using you for your money.'"
"Where is Isla? I need to be with her." I frantically say, as I search for the ambulance that is no longer here.
Luke is soon by my side as we try to find someone who can tell us any information about Isla's condition or what hospital she's been taken to. As we run by one of the police cars, we see Chelsea sitting in the back seat with a smug smirk on her face. Luke runs over to the vehicle and starts banging on the window like a mad man. "You bitch. You fucking bitch. I will kill you. You better pray to God she's okay. I fucking hate you." Several cops come threatening to arrest Luke, but I pull him away.
"We've got to go." I tell him once I get the information to which hospital, they've taken her too. Tyler meets us at his car and drives Luke and I to the hospital while Nick drives the rest, including Zoe and Spencer since their car was stuck at diner because of the crime scene.
Tyler speeds to the hospital, leaving the others is a trail of our dust. As he pulls into the parking lot, Luke and I don't even wait for him to stop the car before the two of us are already out and running into the hospital. "We're looking for Isla Camarillo." I tell the receptionist.
The receptionist types Isla's name i her computer reading her information before giving us a sad look. "She is in surgery on the fourth floor, but only family is allowed."
"We are her family." Luke says rudely before we run to the elevators. Three minutes past and there is still no sign of the elevator ever making it to us so the two of us take the stairwell and run up four flights of stairs.
We walk up to the receptionist on the fourth floor who is a stern-looking woman. "We're here for Isla Camarillo."
She looks between us before typing something on her computer. "She's in surgery, but only the family of the patient is allowed to wait up here."
"Ma'am, we are her family and there are four others that will be here soon that are also her family." I snarl at the receptionist. Minutes later the elevator dings and Sofia, Killian, Tyler and Nick come running to us.
"How's my sister?" Nick says frantically. "When can I see her?"
The receptionist sucks her teeth while looking at the six of us. "I'm sorry, but only family is allowed up here. There is no way you are all family."
Tyler pushes his way to the front of the receptionist's desk. "We are too her family, but if you have a problem, maybe I should call my parents."
The woman smirks at Tyler. "Look kid, your parents don't scare me and there is nothing they can do to make me change my mind or hospital policy. Now the six of you need to leave before I call security."
Tyler eyes the woman. "Really? You don't think Sara and James Constable could change hospital policy?" The woman's smirk fades into a frown. "Okay, well let me call them and find out." Tyler says smirking.
"Don't! I mean that won't be necessary. The waiting room is right over there. The doctor will be out to let you know how Isla is doing after her surgery."
"I thought so." Tyler spats at the receptionist. He turns on his heels and walks to the waiting room with us following him.
We are silent as we sit in the waiting room. The only noise is coming from the second hand ticking away on the clock. "How did you do that?" Killian says breaking the silence.
Tyler shrugs. "The perks of having rich parents who make huge donations to hospitals. That and my day dad and mom are renowned surgeons. That's why they are always traveling for work. They take on surgeries that are either extremely difficult or cases that there isn't much hope left for."
"Oh." Killian says, thinking.
Once again, we are engulfed into an awkward silence. The ticking from the clock is starting to get to me as seconds become minutes, and minutes become hours. All of us look like a wreck, but I think Luke and I are taking it the worse followed by Nick. Sofia's a mess while Killian and Tyler are trying to stay strong for all of us, but you can see them both slowly crumbling.
I blame myself for this. I shouldn't have allowed myself to fall in love with her, but, how couldn't I? She's changed me. I'm happy now, well not at this moment, but I'm always happy when she's around. I can't seem to understand things at the moment. In the past twenty-four hours my day went from being the best day in my life to the worst day of my life.
I'm so terrified she isn't going to make it. She told me she loves me, and I know she meant it in the same way that I love her. I want to say it to her again. I want to go on our first date. I want to spend my life with her, but instead I'm sitting in a hospital waiting room, just waiting to find out if she's okay or not.
"I-I can't believe Chelsea shot her." Luke says, causing us to all look up at him. "She really was fucking crazy. She wanted to kill Isla, and it's all my fault. All because I rejected Chelsea freshman year and then again, this year. She was going to take an innocent life."
I feel nauseous at the thought that Chelsea really wanted to kill Isla. I know Luke, Nick and I have some mental issues, but fuck Chelsea is a whole new type of mental case. I'm thankful that the police have Chelsea in custody, but it does nothing to make me feel better about the situation that we are in. Isla has been betrayed numerous times. People around her watch, laughed and joined in with Chelsea. The school staff and teachers failed to protect Isla time and time again. They knew what was going on. They saw it with their own eyes but decided to turn their back to it anyways. Even the police failed her. She reported Chelsea, but instead of receiving protection, she was sent threats and still called names to the point of leaving the home her parents bought and moved an hour away. Finally, we failed her. I should have chased after her when she said there could be no us. I know she didn't mean it. She was in pain but couldn't stand to see Luke in pain so like always she sacrifices her own happiness. After that no one ever checked on her. Luke and I were too busy worrying about our damn selves and the others were trying to figure out how to help us. She probably felt alone, like no one cared. I'm glad that she called her two new friends for help. That shows growth in her but look what happened. She ended up being found by Chelsea. It wasn't worth it.
As the hours pass, we each take turns having breakdowns as we try to comfort each other. It's already two something in the morning and everyone but Luke and I are asleep. Neither one of us wants to bring up what happened earlier. I know we will eventually need to talk about it, but right now the only thing that matters is Isla. I know him well enough to know that he is blaming this whole thing on himself like I am blaming it on myself.
The room continues to remain quiet besides the clocking ticking which is annoying as hell now. The fourth floor in this hospital is meant for serious cases only. Straight across from where we are sitting in the waiting room is the OR (operating rooms), to the left is the ICU and to the right is the PICU. There hasn't been a single other person in this waiting room besides us. I guess that's great for other people, and I guess that means that Thomas guy that also got shot wasn't as bad off.
The OR doors swing open and mine and Luke's head raises up. A doctor walks out with a solemn face. "Can I speak with the family of Ms. Camarillo, please?"
The others are still asleep, so Luke and I wake them up. I'm glad that they're sleeping, but they would be upset with the two of us if we didn't wake them.
"What's going on?" Nick asks, rubbing the sleep out of his eyes. He looks like he's waking up from a hangover. Waking up from a hangover would be a lot better than what he's actually waking up to.
"The doctor is here to give us and update on Isla."
Nick jumps out of his seat and runs to the doctor frantically. "Is she okay? Is my sister okay?" He cries desperately.
