Chapter 36 ~ His mom has to be on drugs

Isla's POV

The past few days have been really nice around the house. We finished working on the bedrooms Sunday afternoon before Isabella and Isaac got home. Isabelle was thrilled to find out that she and Emma would be sharing a room. I had also somewhat explained the situation to Mrs. Ford, and she said she would be more than happy to have Emma join them when Isabelle and Isaac were with her.

We've all been kind of lazy the past few days with there being no school, but tomorrow is Thanksgiving, so we need to start prepping some of the food. Of course, Hayden will be the main chief in the house, since he likes cooking and he's the best cook out of all of us.

Sofia and I were sitting at the counter in the kitchen chomping on celery and carrots when Killian walked in. "Hey, I think we may need to get some more supplies for the winter storm that the news keeps talking about."

Sofia raises an eyebrow at him. "Kill, do you really think it's going to be that bad?" She asks. "Come on, it's not even winter yet, and we never get storms this early in the season."

He rolls his eyes at her. "I know, Sofe, but wouldn't it be better to be prepared than not?"

I take a bite of my celery, thinking about the storm. I would rather have stuff and not use it, than to need stuff and not have it. Plus, with so many of us here, it wouldn't hurt to have extra stuff. I also heard the news say that they expect this storm to be worse than they originally thought. "Killian, I think you're right." He smirks at Sofia because I am agreeing with him. "Here, take my card and have Nick go with you."

"I'll go wake up Nick. You two make a list of stuff I should pick up," he says before rushing upstairs.

I grab a pen and some paper to make the list. "Okay, so what do we need?"

Sofia smiles. "Junk food, blankets, water, drinks, flashlights, batteries, movies, first aid kit..." she taps her chin, trying to think of more stuff.

"Board games," I say excitedly. "Also, toilet paper. We wouldn't want to run out of that." We both laugh.

Nick comes downstairs, complaining about having to wake up. Sofia and I laugh at how he can be so childish at times. "Why do I have to go to the store with Killian and not the two of you?"

Sofia pinches his cheek, "Because we are chopping the vegetables for Hayden, and we have to start on making the desserts for tomorrow."

Nick pouts and mumbles, "It better be good." I lightly smack him on the back of the head.

"Hey!" He says, rubbing the back of his head. "What was that for?"

"How dare you doubt our dessert-making skills," I playfully scold him.

"Angel, can we take the SUV?" Killian asks as he walks into the kitchen. Angel. For some reason every time he calls me that I blush. I tried to hide my blush but Nick noticed it. He gives me a pointed look before glaring at Killian for a moment. Hmm...I wonder what that is about?

I toss my keys at him. "Sure. Here's the list and if y'all think of anything else, get it." Killian grabs the list and then heads out with Nick.

Now that Sofia and I are alone in the kitchen we can start baking. "So what are we making?" Sofia asks.

"We are making two pumpkin pies, one apple pie, one strawberry pie, one pecan pie, chocolate cake, and cookies," I say, trying to make sure I haven't forgotten anything.

Sofia's mouth hangs open. "Why so much? I mean, I'm not complaining, but that seems like a lot of dessert."

I start laughing at her. "We live with five boys. They eat like pigs. Isaac alone could eat all of the pies and still want more."

She laughs too. "Okay, I get it." She starts grabbing the ingredients and placing them on the counter. "It's a good thing y'all have more than one oven in this kitchen."

Our kitchen is slightly bigger than most. My parents didn't like to overspend on money, but they did go all out in the kitchen. My parents loved to cook and bake. We have a twelve top stove and three ovens. I remember all of the times that my mom and I would bake together in here. "Yeah, my parents loved to cook and bake. We spent a lot of time here together as a family."

Sofia sees the tears in my eyes and runs over to hug me. "I'm sorry I didn't mean to upset you," she says frantically.

"You didn't upset me, I was just remembering all of the good times I had cooking and baking with my parents." Sofia hands me a tissue to wipe my eyes. "I wish I could make more memories with them here."

Sofia grabs the flour and throws some at me. "Well now you can make memories with us," she giggles, trying to lighten the mood.

I give her a serious look—or at least, I try to, before bursting into laughter. "Yes, I can make memories with my amazing friends, who are now my family."

After spending a few hours baking, Sofia and I are finally finished with baking the desserts for tomorrow's Thanksgiving dinner. We may or may not have destroyed the kitchen in the process.

"WHAT. THE. HELL?" Hayden bellows as he enters the kitchen and sees the mess that we have made.

Our eyes widen when we see him. "Sorry," we sheepishly say in unison.

Hayden sternly looks at both of us. "Clean this kitchen RIGHT NOW!" He roars. "I have to start preparing my stuff for tomorrow's dinner."

"Yes, sir." We both say as we salute him. Once he is out of earshot, we both start laughing at him. He doesn't normally get upset with me unless it comes to the kitchen, and I find it hilarious.

Sofia starts to wipe down the counters. "Wow! He sure can become Mr. Grumpy Pants when the kitchen is a mess."

"He loves to cook, and the kitchen is his special place," I reply while washing the dishes.

Hayden and Luke start prepping the food for tomorrow once Sofia and I have finished cleaning our mess in the kitchen. As Killian and Nick walk in through the front door carrying all the stuff they bought from the store, Sofia and I plop ourselves down on the living room couch. "I'm ordering Chinese for dinner!" I yell for everyone to hear. Since no one complains, I guess everyone is okay with it.

Emma and Isabelle bounce down the stairs. "Can we have a movie night?" they ask.

I nod. I was going to tell them to hurry up and pick a movie out before Nick does, but the doorbell rings. I'm slightly confused because I ordered Chinese food less than ten minutes ago. There's no way this can be our food. The Chinese restaurant is at least a ten-minute drive from here.

I open my front door only to be surprised by who I see. Tyler's mom is standing there grinning at me. "Hello, Mrs. Constable." How the heck does she even know where I live? "What are you doing here?" I ask politely.

The look on her face makes me a little worried. "Hello sweetheart, Can I speak to your parents?" Well this just got awkward.

"Umm. My parents aren't here." I hesitate. "They passed away a couple of months ago."

Tyler's mom frowns as me. "I'm sorry Isla. Can I speak to the adult in charge then?"

"That would be me."

She is shocked but she tries to mask it with a smile. "You live here by yourself?" she asks.

I swallow nervously, not knowing if I should tell her the truth or not. I don't even know why she is here. "Umm. No. I live here with my sister, brother, five other classmates, and their little sister."

"No adults, though? Where are everyone else's parents?" she asks in shock. I don't like how personal this is getting.

"We are all eighteen beside our three younger siblings. I'm their legal guardian. All of our parents are out of the picture," I tell her.

She surprises me by hugging me tightly. "If there is ever anything you need, feel free to come to us, sweetheart."

"Thank you." I say as I pull away from her hug. "May I ask why you are here though?"

She sheepishly smiles at me. "Yes, about that..." she says nervously. "Tyler's dad and I have to go out of town for a while and Tyler can't come with us. I've tried contacting all his other friends to see if he could stay with them, but it seems every single one of his friends are busy or just don't want him to stay with them. I'm guessing something happened between them, but no one has told me what. You know how teenage boys can be. The thing is, I don't want him to be alone for Thanksgiving, or for the storm that is coming. I was hoping maybe he could join you and your family...umm friends, I mean." She smiles ever so sweetly at me.

For a few moments, I don't even know how to respond to her. Tyler is the one who tried to force himself on me before my parents passed away, but he also warned me about what was about to happen to Luke. I would hate for him to be alone on Thanksgiving though. But the guys will not be happy about him staying here. I have no clue what to do. His mom is staring at me and pleading with her eyes for me to say yes. We do have plenty of supplies and food. "I guess it would be okay," I whisper.

She immediately hugs me. "Thank you, Isla. This means a lot to me and Tyler will be thrilled when he finds out. He talks about you all the time. I'll drop him off later tonight. He will probably need to stay with you for about two weeks."

"Two weeks?" I croak.

"Oh, I know I bet you wish it could be longer for you to love birds. Just remember, I'm too young to be a grandmother," she says as she rushes off to her car. Wait. Love birds? Two young to be a grandmother? What the hell? His mom has to be on drugs.

Crap. Now I have to tell everyone else. They are going to kill me. As I enter the kitchen, I call for everyone.

"The food is here already?" Hayden asks.

"No."

"Who was at the door, then?"

Now that everyone is in the kitchen, I guess I can tell them. I pinch the bridge of my nose before sighing. Yep, this isn't going to be good. "Tyler's mom was at the door."

"What did she want?" Luke asks.

I laugh nervously. "She wanted to see if Tyler could spend Thanksgiving here?" I say, but it sounds more like a question.

"What?" All four guys growl. I know we helped him the other day, but that doesn't mean that they like him and want to become friends with him.

"His parents are going out of town and they didn't want him to be alone for Thanksgiving or the storm."

"Why doesn't he stay with one of his friends?" Sofia asks.

"Apparently, he doesn't have friends anymore. Probably because of Chelsea, but his mom said that I was his last option."

"And you said no way in hell, right?" Killian asks.

Hayden pats and Killian on the back while shaking his head. "She said yes."

"What? Why?" Killian growls.

Hayden gives me a small smile. "Because Isla is a caring person and would help anyone who is in need."

Killian looks at me. "Please, Angel, tell me that you didn't say yes."

I look down at my feet, feeling bad that my friends are upset. I know I should have told her no, but I would feel bad if he had to be alone. It would eat at me until I couldn't handle it anymore. "I'm really sorry guys. I said he could stay, and he will be here later tonight," I squeak, my voice softer than a mouse's.

Luke and Killian walk angrily out of the kitchen without saying a word to me. "Hey, it will be okay." Nick says nudging me with his shoulder. "I'll talk to Kilian and Luke and they'll come around."

Sofia rolls her eyes at me. "You are too nice for your own good, but that's okay. I love you either way. I am going to go help Nick calm the guys down," she says as she exits the kitchen.

I look at Hayden, who is now prepping the turkey. "Are you upset with me too?"

He gives me one of his award-winning smiles. "Of course not, Love. I would have been shocked if you had said that he couldn't stay. That is what makes you so special and it's what makes me like you. You care for others even after they have wronged you." He washes his hands so that he can hug me. "Love, if more people were like you this world would be a much better place." Being embraced in his hug is making my senses go in overdrive. I always feel so protected and safe when I am with Hayden.
