Chapter 25 ~ Well there's one piece of the puzzle
Isla's POV
The dreaded day has finally come. Today I must return to school. I've haven't been to school since the day Luke saved me from the three jocks on the football team. The last time I was in this school, my parents were still alive, Kaira was my best friend and Luke hadn't made out with Chelsea. To say that I am nervous would be a really big understatement.
Over the past week, I have spent a lot of time with Nick and Hayden. Luke has also been coming around more, and I think the guys have slowly started to rebuild their friendship with him. I don't know if it will ever go back to what it once was, but at least it is getting better. None of us have talked to Kaira since the day she came home from the hospital. Luke has been the only one who has been going to school since he still lives with Beth and she won't let him stay home. He told us that Kaira and Chelsea are now best friends, and Nick and Hayden have lost their 'bad boy' status due to being friends with me. Kaira had run back to school and told everyone that they were living with me because I was paying them to sleep with me.
Supposedly Luke was trying to do damage control, but Kaira and Chelsea convince everyone that Nick, Hayden, and I were blackmailing Luke to be friends with us. I feel bad for Hayden and Nick. They've gone from the 'bad boys' to the 'freaks' who hang out with the 'school's slut'. Neither of them seems to be bothered by their new titles. If anything, they seem happier. They both said that they're happy they won't have to worry about Chelsea and her barbie army coming on to them. They think they're out of the limelight but because they still hang out with me, they'll still draw attention.
For the most part, the past week has been pretty good. Isabelle and Isaac are finally home with us again. Besides stressing about returning to school, I also can't seem to get a blonde hair, blue-eyed boy out of my head. I didn't tell the guys about Killian. All three of them are in overprotected mode with me right now, and I didn't need them worrying about someone I will probably never see again. I do hope to see Killian again though, but I doubt I ever will. We pull up to hell I mean school and all four of us seem very nervous.
Luke decided he wanted to ride with us to school, so he stayed the night last night. Nick wasn't too happy about it at first but agreed to it after I made him chocolate chip cookies. Yep, food is the way to a man's heart and a way to get to what I want. After sitting in the car for what seems like forever, we slowly make our way to class. Due to me being in the hospital, Hayden was somehow able to talk the principal into getting all four of us switched into the same classes. Yes, he was even kind to get Luke's schedule changed too.
Our new schedule:
1st: History
2nd: Math
3rd: Art (Yep, I'm no longer a library assistant and the boy's drop athletic)
1st Lunch
4th: Science
5th: English
6th: Gym/Music
We make our way to the first period. Nick and I take our regular seat with Hayden and Luke taking the two in front of us. I am basically trapped against the window with the three guys blocking me from everyone else. People are staring at us, but not as many as I expected because there is other news going around school. It seems that two new students will be joining our grade. We rarely get new students without it being the beginning of the school year, so having two students join at the end of October is a big deal, especially with them being seniors.
The four of us are sitting in our seats trying to ignore everyone else when one of the guys from the basketball team, Vic, walks over to Nick and throws all his stuff on the floor. "Freak. I hope the slut is paying you enough since you lost your title as one of the 'bad boys'," he laughs loudly.
Several other kids laugh along with him. Nick stands up in front of the Vic towering over him. "I might be seen as a 'freak' now, but that doesn't mean I can't kick your ass. Do you really think a change in my title changes my ability of what I can do to you?" The jock looks scared until two of his friends come and join his side.
Vic smirks. "Now it looks like it's three against one."
"Think again," Hayden says as he and Luke join Nick's side.
Vic and his two goons gulp nervously. "We were just playing around," he says as he looks at Luke.
I guess Chelsea has warned people about messing with Luke. She still thinks he's on her side. I'm just relieved that the three guys backed down. The last thing I want is for Nick, Luke and Hayden is to end up in a fight because of me. Speaking of the devil. "Vic, I warned you about messing with my boyfriend. I don't care what you do to the two freaks, but Lucas is not a part of them," Chelsea screeches as she runs over and grabs Luke's arm.
"Get the fuck off of me," Luke growls at her. "I'm not your boyfriend."
Chelsea looks surprised by his outburst before turning to me. "You, slut! What did you do to him? You cast some sort of spell on him, didn't you? Just like you did two these two freaks. They're losing everything because of you," she says as she raises her hand to slap me.
I close my eyes waiting to feel the sting, but it never comes. "Don't you dare, Chelsea!" Lucas says each word dripping with venom as he grabs her arm.
"Don't you ever put your hands-on Isla. These are my friends. I could care less about you or anyone else in this damn school. I am not your boyfriend. Get through your thick damn skull. Never have been and never will be. Kissing you was the biggest mistake in my life. I almost lost the three most important people in this world to me."
He leans in next to her ear before lowering his voice. "I will never make that mistake again."
Hurt flashes across her face for a brief second. Had I blinked? I would have completely missed it. "Whatever. You want to join the freaks than do so. I heard that the new guy is Greek god status anyways, but you will regret choosing her over me. That's a promise, Lucas," she says as she makes her way to her seat.
The door opens and Mrs. Carte walks in with a girl with blonde hair and blue eyes. She reminds me of someone, but I just can't put my tongue on it. "Class we have a new student that I would like to introduce you all too. This is Sofia O'Conner."
"Hello," She says politely.
She is beautiful. I'm sure Chelsea is going to make her one of the barbies. Although with how pretty she is, she could probably take over as the queen bee of this school. All of the guys in class are already drooling over her. There are only two empty desks in the classroom. One near Chelsea and the one on the other side of Nick. Mrs. Carte looks around the classroom. "Sofia I only have two available spots. You can either sit by Chelsea," Chelsea smiles and raises her hand.
"I would love for you to sit beside me," Chelsea says sweetly as if she is the nicest person on the planet.
"Or," Mrs. Carte glares at Chelsea for interrupting her.
"You can sit in the back row and I will have Nick Isla switch places so you're sitting by a girl."
What is Mrs. Carte thinking? I love my seat. Plus, once Sofia looks back here, I'm sure the guys will scare her off. I mean they might not be known as the school's 'bad boys' anymore, but they still look just as scary as they did before they started hanging out with me.
"Did you say Isla?" Sofia asks Mrs. Carte her eyes seem to sparkle at the mention of my name.
Mrs. Carte nods her head. Sofia's smile grows. "Isla. I want to sit next to Isla. Most definitely please I want to sit next to Isla."
What is wrong with this girl? Do I know her? Why does she want to sit by me? "Nick. Isla, please change seats," Mrs. Carte demands.
Nick, Hayden, and Luke all turn towards me giving me the 'who the hell is she?' look. I shrug and mouth 'I have no clue who she is.' I pick up my stuff and exchange seats with Nick. Sofia makes her way to her seat but turns around and whispers something to Mrs. Carte. "Jonathan please move to the seat next to Chelsea." Jonathan gets up and moves to his new seat leaving the seat next to Luke and in front of Sofia's new seat vacant.
Sofia's POV
I walk to my seat in the back of the classroom where Isla is sitting. Isla isn't a very popular name, so she must be the girl Killian was talking about. The moment I lay my eyes on her, I am amazed by her beauty. Yep, she has to be her. I'm surprised to see she was sitting in the midst of three very scary but extremely attractive guys. Hmmm.... Looks like my big brother has some competition. Isla, and the three guys who she is sitting with all look at me like I'm slightly crazy. I wonder if they're her bodyguards.
"Hi," I chirp as I put my hand out for her to shake.
"I'm Sofia, but you obviously know that already, like how I know you're Isla. That must be Nick," I say pointing to the guy who is now sitting by the window.
"Who are these two guys?"
Isla shakes my hand. "Umm hi? That's Luke and Hayden," she says as she points at the other two guys.
"I... umm...I think you made a mistake," She whispers as the teacher steps out of the room.
"You see we are considered..."
She is cut off by a red-headed girl in a cheerleading uniform. "Freaks and the school's slut."
The three guys sitting next to Isla all glare at the redhead. "I'm Chelsea. You will fit in much better with me and my friends. You wouldn't want to be contaminated by these four." She says in a sickly-sweet voice.
Isla looks down at the ground nervously. Well, there's one piece of the puzzle on why she seems broken. "What?" All five of them say at the same time.
Oops, I guess I said that out loud. "Actually, Chelsea, I really like this spot. Isla seems so angelic, while you seem like the devil in disguise," I say with a huge smile on my face.
Isla gives me a weird look at my choice of words. I probably shouldn't have said anything to do with the word 'angel'. I want her to see Killian be a surprise for her. "You'll come running to me just like Kaira did." Chelsea hisses before returning to her seat.
"Sorry about her," Isla says quietly.
"She is right though. I am at the lowest point on the social ladder."
"You can't be that bad," I tell her.
She seems like such a sweet girl. Killian always had good judgment when it came to people. Isla gulps, "It's social suicide to be seen with me. If you don't believe me look at these three," she says pointing at the three guys.
"They were the school's 'bad boys' until they decided to be friends with me. Now they're the school's 'freaks'."
"Luke just got demoted to 'freak' today." Nick laughs.
"It was completely worth it." He admits.
"Chelsea has a lot of power over the student body. These three were treated like gods and now look at them."
"I prefer everyone thinking of me as a freak," Hayden says.
At least I think that's what they said his name was. "I would rather be friends with you any day of the week, Love," he says to Isla.
Hmm... that could be a small problem. He seems to have feelings for her. The way Luke looks at her he seems to have feelings for her also. He didn't seem to like Hayden calling her, Love. Nick, on the other hand, doesn't look at her the same way as the other two. He looks at her like he is more of a brother to her. I still ship her with my brother though.
"So, I have to ask, but are you really the school's 'slut'?"
All four of them look at me like I am crazy. "N-No I am not. Chelsea just hates me because she thinks I stole these three guys from her."
"Sorry for being so blunt with my question, but I feel it's better to ask instead of listening to rumors," I smile sheepishly at the four of them.
I lean in next to her and whisper in her ear "Are you dating one of them?" Isla blushes and shakes her head no.
I do a happy dance in my head because that means Killian has a shot. Hayden looks at me. "So, do you happen to know why Mrs. Carte, made Jonathan move?"
"It's a surprise," I say while grinning like a Cheshire cat.
"A good surprise I hope," Isla says warily.
"Yes, it's good. Scratch that... It's an amazing surprise," I smile.
Well, it's good for Isla, I hope. Her friends might not be happy, but oh well. "Can I see your schedules?"
"Here's mine. The boys and I have all of the same classes," Isla says as she hands me her schedule.
I look over her schedule and start to do another happy dance in my head. "I have all of my classes with y'all." Which means so does Killian. I know I must seem crazy, but Killian deserves happiness. He takes nightly beatings, so Emma and I don't get hurt at all. "Hey, would it be okay if I ate with y'all at lunch?"
They all nod. "We eat outside under the giant willow tree," Hayden says.
"Would it be okay if I invite one other person to sit with us?" I ask hesitantly.
"As long as they don't mind sitting with the 'outcast' of the school then I don't see a problem with it," Nick says.
"They'll probably get the title 'freak' though."
"I'm sure they won't mind. Hey but I do have a question. Since I'm hanging out with y'all does that make me the 'school's slut' too?" They all give me a weird look.
"What? I thought boys got the title 'freak' and girls 'slut'. I'm not one, but I'll accept the title if that means I get to hang out with y'all."
"I like her," Nick says before we all start laughing.
"She's much better than Kaira and she isn't violent."
I lean towards Isla. "Who's Kaira and do I need to be violent?"
"It's a long story that I will tell you later, and no you don't have to be violent."
Mrs. Carte stares at us because we are still laughing. She clears her throat. "I am glad that the four of y'all are making Ms. O'Conner feel welcome, but the four of you have missed a lot of work from being absent so much the past few weeks and Ms. O'Conner is new. The five of you need to pay attention. I would hate for any of you to fail and have to repeat your senior year," My four new friends glare at the teacher as the rest of the class snickers.
While copying the notes I decide to text my brother
Sofia: How's it going enrolling Ems into school?
Killian: They were giving me problems at first. They wanted uncle to enroll her, but I explained that he was busy.
Sofia: Are they letting you enroll her now?
Killian: Yeah, there's just a lot of paperwork.
Sofia: I picked up your schedule. We have all the same classes.
Killian: That good. How's the school?
Sofia: It's like any other high school. I do have a surprise for you. Do you think you will make it here by lunch? It starts at 11:15.
Kill: Yeah. What's my surprise?
Sofia: Nope. You have to wait until you get here.
Killian: You suck Sofe. Did you make any friends?
Sofia: Yes, and about that...
Killian: What about that?
Sofia: We are going to be ranked with the lowest people in this school...
Killian: Okay...What did you do?
Sofia: We could be with the popular crowd. I was invited to sit with them but trust me this is much more worth it.
Killian: ehh... okay?
Sophia: You're my brother and twin. You are supposed to support whatever decision I make and go with it.
Killian: I will always support you. If you are choosing to hang out with the kids on the lowest part of the social scale, then I'm sure you have good reasons for it.
Sophia: Good! Trust me it will be worth it. I should warn you though, they themselves said being friends with them is social suicide.
Killian: I don't care Sofia. I'll back you up all the way.
Sofia: Thanks, Kill. 😊 BTW we are eating lunch outside by the giant Willow tree. I'll grab your lunch from the cafeteria.
Killian: OK. Thanks. See U Soon.
As the bell rings and we make our way to our next class everyone is staring at us. Nick and Luke walked in front of Isla and me with Hayden walking behind us. "Is there a reason why they act like your bodyguards?" I whisper to Isla.
She gives me a sad look and nods her head. When I look in her eyes, I see what my brother was talking about. There is so much pain in her eyes. As we are walking to class someone trips, Isla, but Hayden catches her. "So now you're sleeping with all three of them," The short girl says with malice.
"Get the hell away from us, Kaira," Nick growls.
Hmmm... So, this Kaira.
"Nope." She says popping the 'p'. What are you going to do about it, Nick? Are you going to hit me? Are you going to hit a girl?" She's trying to egg him on.
Once she sees that he won't hit her, she turns her aggression back towards Isla. "Everybody knows that they are only with you because they pity you because your parents died. Everybody also knows you are using your parents' death as a way to get them to bang you."
What the hell? What is this girl's problem? All three boys are fuming. I'm worried that at any moment one of them will go berserk. A crowd is now forming around us. Isla is trying to fight back tears, but she is also whispering something to each of the guys. They each seem to relax a little once she says something, but all four of them become on high alert when Chelsea appears next to Kaira with some guys that I am guessing are from the football team.
I can tell this is about to get out of control. I guess I should make myself known. I walk over to Chelsea and Kaira. "Are you coming to your senses yet?" She asks while smirking.
I smile. "If you're wanting to fight. I think you should wait until the end of the day," she looks at me confused.
"We wouldn't want anyone to get in trouble during school hours."
"Fine, but there's nothing you can do to save them," she says as she flips her hair.
"If you were smart, you would leave them in the dirt where they belong and join me."
Chelsea and Kaira walk away and the hallway clears out. Hayden, Luke, Nick, and Isla were all staring at me with disbelief. "What? I was trying to buy us a little more time."
"We're going to die today, aren't we?" Nick whispers.
Everyone looks at him like he's crazy. "What? I don't want to die. I just bought the paint for my room."
Isla gives him a hug. "Don't worry, Nick. You will still get to paint your room."
"As long as you know how to hold a paintbrush with broken arms," Luke says.
Isla starts laughing at his remarks causing the rest of us to laugh. Once we make it to our second period which is math, I text Killian.
Sofia: Can you get Declan, Hugo, and Tomas to meet us at the school by the time the last bell rings?
Killian: Holy Hell...What did you do? The only time the four get together is when there is a fight.
Sofia: ahh... you may have to fight some people after school. I love you, big bro, please don't be mad it will all be worth it.
Killian: How is this all going to be worth it? Who the hell am I needing to fight and why? This is our first day at a new school. What type of damage have you done?
Sofia: It will be worth it and probably the football team, maybe also the basketball team. I didn't exactly get a headcount.
Killian: So, you want the four of us to fight the entire football and basketball team?
Sofia: No...there are three other people that will help you, while me and one other person has to fight the cheerleader and whatever other snobby bitches that try to join in.
Killian: Are you going to tell me what's going on?
Sofia: At lunch after your surprise.
Killian: You know I'm not 100% right now. Uncle beat me badly last night.
Sofia: I know and I'm really sorry about that. You always do everything to protect me and Emma. You always try to make us happy but trust me when I say that this is for you.
Killian: I don't see how me fighting the football team and basketball team on my first day of school is good for me but fine. I'll see you soon. This better be worth it. This seems like way too much trouble for high school.
I really hope this is worth it. I haven't seen Killian smile in such a long time, but Isla was able to bring it out with just one conversation with him at the park. I hope this is the right Isla or I'm going to be dead.
