Chapter #40

Does this pic look like a nine-year-old drew it?

(Jason's POV)

"So Ross gets to stay with us?", I ask Ty, tilting my head out of habit. "Yep. What do you think Ross? Can you deal with all of......", Jerome trails off. "Where did he go!?", Mitch gasps. I quickly glance around, but I don't see Ross anywhere. Muffled giggles from above me quickly draw my attention. I look up to see Ross looking down at us from the roof. "How did you get up there so quickly!?", Ty gawks. "I'm a really good climber", is all Ross says.

"Right then..... I guess we should get back to the others?", the stranger says. I'm pretty sure that he's an important person. "I guess. Quinten, do you mind keeping an eye on Ross?", Ty asks. Quinten huffs before nodding his head. A flash of movement catches my eye, so I turn my head to see Mitch and Jerome running off in the opposite direction of the tent. I guess they don't want to go back into the tent? I really want to know what's going on, the curiosity is killing me. Ross quickly climbs down as Ty and the other person leave.

"So, what do we do now?", Ross asks. "I-I don't know. Jason and I were just going to look a-around camp for a while",  Quinten mumbles. I hum in agreement, watching as the gears in Ross's head seem to turn behind his eyes. "Do you wanna go listen to what they're saying in the meeting?', he suddenly asks. "But isn't that bad? What if they catch us?", I ask in confusion. "We-We're not suppose to listen. That's the whole r-reason Ty asked me to 'watch' you two", Quinten says, a little resentful. "We won't get I'm super sneaky! LET'S GO!!!!", Ross screams, grabbing my hand and pulling me quickly across the clearing. Even though Ross is older then me, he acts a lot like someone younger. Quinten follows us to the tent while nervously looking around, like we're about to be caught.

Instead of going through the door, Ross leads us behind the tent. "Are you sure we should be creeping around?", I whisper to Ross. "How do find out anything important if you don't go where you're not suppose to?", Ross says like it's the most logical things in the world. I shrug my shoulders in response. Quinten mutters something under his breath as Ross digs around in his pocket. He pulls out a tiny funnel, or what looks to be a normal funnel, and slips the skinny end underneath the tent wall. Voices from inside instantly fill the previously quiet space. "How's it doing that?", Quinten whispers in surprise, his stutter gone. "An assassin never explains their tricks", Ross giggles back. I wonder what the heck is in that funnel?

"Jason said that he knows how to navigate the catacombs, so we can easily bring a few teams through there and into the castle", I hear Ty say. "Even if this kid does know his way through the catacombs, we need people inside to open up the outside entrance to the catacombs", an unfamiliar voice with a thick accent says. "And we need people outside to draw the most of the guards out. The castle is swarming with them", a girl's voice throws in. "All the ones in the watchtowers, we need to take them out through the catacombs", a higher pitched man's voice says. "The squid fort we captured a few days ago caught a few squids who were delivering a message. In a few days, over half of the squid force are doing a march from the West coast to the East coast. They're starting in the North, and that'll give us plenty of time to launch an assault", Ty explains. "I can keep them busy outside while you handle things with the leader", Don's muffled voice rings out. "So we attack in a few days, have a distraction to draw most of the remaining squids away, send most of our force into the catacombs and take out the leader and important officials. That still doesn't help us with getting someone inside the main floor undetected", a man says. I recognize his voice as the person who came and saw Ross.

Ross seems to hear this last comment and pauses. He seems to forget that Quinten and I are here as he spins on his heal and marches around the tent. "Where are you going!?", Quinten whisper shouts at him. "Umm.... I don't know", Ross says, stopping and looking around. "Where am I?", he thinks out loud. I answer anyway with, "The 5th rebel camp, remember? You're looking for Sky. And the people in the tent are planning an attack". "Ohh..... that's why I was thinking of Amphu", Ross says before starting to walk again. Who's Amphu?

I get up and follow Ross, and I hear Quinten following me. "W-What are you doing!?", Quinten stutters, grabbing Ross's arm when he tries to open the tent and go inside. "I'm helping!", he excitedly explains before somehow dragging Quinten forward. I squeak and duck into the tent behind them, not wanting to be left out. I look up to see six pairs of eyes looking at the three of us. "I can help", Ross says simply. He walks farther into the tent, paying no attention the kinda scary camp leaders and Don. Ross grabs paper that was on the table and pulls out a packet of cartons from his pocket. He starts drawing on the paper while continuing to ignore everyone. "I'm not even going to question this", the girl leader says, watching Ross draw. Quinten plays with his hands and keeps a good distance away from all the leaders except Ty. I soon find myself next to Ross and drawing out a map with his crayons. I haven't gotten to draw in a while, it's fun to do it with someone. Sky couldn't draw with me when the mean squids showed up, I couldn't find him.

"So.... people need to get inside? I have an idea....", Ross mumbles while setting down his crayon. Why's he so shy all the sudden? I lean over and look at his picture, amazed by what I see. Ross has drawn a detailed picture of what the squid guards where around the castle. Everything lines up with how I remember them, even the sloppily stitched logo. How did Ross draw it that good, that fast? "A couple of people could get inside using costumes. We can use face-paint to look like hybrids", Ross timidly explains. "How are we going to make the costumes? No one here can make one that looks real enough", the camp leader won the accent points out. "I CAN MAKE THEM! I used to make costumes all the the time with....w-with, um........ what?",  Ross trails off in confusion. "You said that you can make costumes?", I ask him. "Oh yeah! I can make them", Ross perks up, putting his hands on his hips in a superhero pose. I laugh at him as the rest of the people look on in confusion. I wonder what has them on edge?
